Wednesday 19th December 2018 Subject: Works of Love The Bible 1. Ps. 146:5, 7 9 (to :) Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:... Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. TheLORD looseth the prisoners: The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORDloveth the righteous: The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: 2. Matt. 15:29 31 Jesus Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. And great multitudes came unto him, having with themthose that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. 3. James 1:22 25 be be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. https://login.concord.christianscience.com/concord3/secure/dashboard 1/6
4. James 2:1 5, 8, 9, 12, 14 18, 20 22, 24, 26 MY brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?... If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.... So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.... What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.... But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?... Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.... For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. 5. Heb. 13:1 3, 8, 20, 21 LET brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.... Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.... the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 1. SH 342:21 Christian Science awakens the sinner, reclaims the infidel, and raises from the couch of pain the helpless invalid. It speaks to the dumb the words of Truth, and they answer with rejoicing. It causes the deaf to hear, the Argument of good works lame to walk, and the blind to see. Who would be the first to disown the Christliness of good works, when our Master says, By their fruits ye shall know them? 2. SH 25:13 26 Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over death. Jesus presented the ideal of God better than could any man Effective triumph whose origin was less spiritual. By his obedience to God, he demonstrated more spiritually than all others the Principle of being. Hence the force of his admonition, If ye love me, keep my commandments. Though demonstrating his control over sin and disease, the great Teacher by no means relieved others from giving the requisite proofs of their own piety. He worked for their guidance, that they might demonstrate this power as he did and understand its divine Principle. 3. SH 51:19 24, 28 His His consummate example was for the salvation of us all, but only through doing the works which he did and taught others to do. His purpose in https://login.concord.christianscience.com/concord3/secure/dashboard 3/6
healing was not alone to restore health, but to demonstrate his divine Principle. He was inspired by God, by Truth and Love, in all that he said and did.... His spirituality separated him from sensuousness, and caused the selfish materialist to hate him; but it was this spirituality which enabled Jesus to heal the sick, cast out evil, and raise the dead. Example for our salvation 4. SH 18:5 9 His mission was both individual and collective. He did life's workaright not only in justice to himself, but in mercy to mortals, to show Divine oneness them how to do theirs, but not to do it for them nor to relieve them of a single responsibility. 5. SH 37:22 25, 27 It is possible, yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman, to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness.... Hear these imperative commands: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect! Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature! Heal the sick! 6. SH 103:6 9, 12 15 Mind-science The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human Liberation of mental family.... Mind-science is wholly separate from any half-way powers impertinent knowledge, because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only. 7. SH 117:19 27 Human theories are inadequate to interpret the divine Principle involved in the miracles (marvels) wrought by Jesus and especially in his mighty, crowning, unparalleled, and triumphant exit from the flesh. Evidence drawn from the five https://login.concord.christianscience.com/concord3/secure/dashboard 4/6
physical senses relates solely to human reason; and because of opacity to the true light, human reason dimly reflects and feebly transmits Jesus' works and words. 8. SH 326:3-5,8, 16 21 If we wish to follow Christ, Truth, it must be in the way of God's appointing. Jesus said, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.... All nature teaches God's love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.... The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now. This point won, you have started as you should. You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement. Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way. 9. SH 350:6 To understand all our Master's sayings as recorded in the New Testament, sayings infinitely important, his followers must grow into that stature of manhood in Christ Jesus which enables them to interpret his Both words and works spiritual meaning. Then they know how Truth casts out error and heals the sick. His words were the offspring of his deeds, both of which must be understood. Unless the works are comprehended which his words explained, the words are blind. 10. SH 456:17 20, 22 Science makes no concessions to persons or opinions. One must abide in the morale of truth or he cannot demonstrate the divine Principle.... Truth does the work, and you must both understand and abide by the divine Principle of your demonstration. No dishonest concessions Hymn. 381:1-4 https://login.concord.christianscience.com/concord3/secure/dashboard 5/6
