We are a Christian church centered on Jesus Christ. Our mission is to share the good news of eternal life through Christ with you. We are both an established, yet new church. We have been serving Bell Gardens since the 1970s. At the same time, we recently began a partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Synod to revitalize our mission and ministry. It s a privilege to worship with you today. Please worship with us again very soon. Worship Information This service folder is your guide for today s worship. Much of our service is responsive between the pastor and the congregation. The pastor will lead the sections marked (M). The congregation is invited to join on the sections marked (C). Children are always welcome to our worship services and are encouraged to participate as they are able. If a child needs a break from the worship service, a nursery is available in the back of our sanctuary. Restrooms are in the back of our church. They are assessible through the hallway along the north side of our building, or through the door to the right of our altar area. OPENING HYMN To Your Temple I Draw Near 3

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 4

GLORY BE TO GOD M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord! 5

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. M: Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 35:4-7a 4 Say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, 6

the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. SECOND LESSON James 1:17-27 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it they will be blessed in what they do. 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Alleluia. 7

GOSPEL Mark 7:31-37 M: The Gospel According to Saint Mark. 31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha! (which means Be opened! ). 35 At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. M: This is the Gospel of our Lord! 8

HYMN OF THE DAY Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old 9

SERMON Jesus Heals our Ears and Tongues Jesús sana nuestros oídos y lenguas Marcos / Mark 7:31-37 APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. OFFERING The members of Christ the King have joined together to do the Lord s work in their community and around the world. Visitors should not feel obligated to participate in this offering. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH The minister leads the congregation in the prayer of the church. 10

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. CLOSING PRAYER M: Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart, that being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BLESSING M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. 11
