Of course, salt was used for more than seasoning; salting was for many centuries the only way to preserve food from decay and corruption. Salt was so valuable that many cultures used it for religious purposes. It also symbolized the fellowship of a shared meal. So when Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, he is saying a number of things at the same time. True disciples give our world its flavor; they are the element preserving the world from decay & corruption; they are a foretaste of the day when humanity will be gathered around the table in God s kingdom. Jesus also warns them, If salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. If the disciples lose their power to season and preserve, then they will not serve the purpose for which Jesus has called them. Disciples should stand out like a light shining from a hilltop. - adapted from Living the Word

From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Archbishop s Annual Appeal: Last weekend, we launched the Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) to raise $49,200. As you know, this drive will last only one month. I preached at all the six Masses, sharing with you about the need and necessity of supporting the Archdiocesan ministries---for the simple reason that our parish is part and parcel of the Archdiocese. When we help, support, and strengthen the Archdiocese, we are actually helping, supporting, and strengthening our own St. Veronica Parish. I also emphasized the great news that in the last five years, you have supported AAA successfully, and I have every reason to believe that you ll make a success of this drive this year as well. It s part of our parish identity to engage in such projects energetically and complete them with pride and a great sense of fulfillment. We bring faith and wisdom to such tasks---and with God s grace and everyone s collaboration, we come out of these projects with flying colors. This week, we begin the second week of the AAA drive. You ll see the names of the AAA donors in the bulletin. Immediately following the homily at all the Masses this weekend, Carlos and Ann Rocha will speak reminding us of the task at hand. Please do send in your donations as early as possible. As I said before, please consider giving a minimum of $200 toward the AAA. Confirmation Retreat: Last weekend, our Confirmation candidates made their Spiritual Retreat. It was a time of evaluation of their lives and resolution about how to rearrange their priorities according to what God is asking them deep down in their hearts. They made the sacrament of Reconciliation and I could see their eagerness to start anew with the gifts of faith in God, gratitude for family, and respect for everyone they ll meet. They were ably assisted by Karen Guglielmoni, Dave Silva, Cherilyn Cabral and members of our youth group and retreat team. This weekend, they will be joining the commitment Masses and proceed toward their Confirmation in the next two weeks---on Sunday, February 23 rd. There will be 73 from our Confirmation program, 5 from our Special Needs program, and 2 candidates joining from other parishes for Confirmation to be conferred by Bishop Robert McElroy. 5 th Grade Mass: As you know, once a month, children of a particular grade will join the Mass. At the 9:30 a.m. Mass last Sunday, the 5 th graders from both the School and Faith Formation joined with their families and teachers. It s always heartening to see the children and families at Masses. One of the basic Catholic practices is to join a weekend Mass, giving thanks to God and celebrating our community as followers of Christ. The 5 th graders read the readings, took up the collection, brought up the gifts, and gave out the bulletins. They were each given a book called Handbook for Today s Catholic Children, an abridged catechism. At this Mass, the Angel Choir sang enchantingly, assisted by Christopher Lindstrom, Sandy Kearney and Naomi Marquez. I m proud of the strength, vitality, and beauty of our liturgical celebrations. We touch Jesus in these celebrations and take him out to share him with others, starting with our family and friends. The Word of God: In the Gospel this weekend, taken from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus invites us to be the salt of the earth and light of the world. As salt adds flavor and acts as a preservative, we can bring flavor to others and preserve the wellbeing, love, and unity in the world. Instead of cursing darkness, we can light a lamp and dispel the forces in life that spread shadows. In the first reading from Isaiah, we are told how we could be salt and light: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Let our light shine! This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. Food for Thought: Husband: I m going to work hard, and some day we are going to be rich. Wife: We are rich already, dear, for we have each other. Some day we may have money. Catholic Joke: Paddy was in New York. He was patiently waiting, and watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted, Okay pedestrians. Then he would allow the traffic to pass. He had done this several times, and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk. After the cop had shouted Pedestrians for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across? Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
