Passion Movies 1905 The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ is a remarkable relic from the very dawn of cinema. First released in 1902 by France s Pathé film company, it was expanded and tinkered with for the next three years, reaching its complete form in 1905. Though popular for decades after its release, it has been unavailable on video or DVD until recently, when it was released on DVD with an early American Jesus movie, From the Manger to the Cross (1912). 1953 The Robe, directed by Henry Koster, starring Richard Burton and Jean Simmons. It s a movie about what happened to the robe that Jesus was wearing before he was stripped to be crucified. 1959 Ben Hur, directed by William Wyler, with a colossal music score by Miklos Rosza, and starring Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, and many others. It is subtitled, The Story of the Christ, and it tells about the rivalry between Ben Hur and Messala, a Roman centurion, featuring the famous Chariot race and a miracle taking place during the passion and crucifixion of Christ. 1961 Barabbas, directed by Richard Fleischer, it tells the story of the criminal who was set free so that Christ could be crucified. With the main actor, Anthony Quinn, the story shows how Barabbas became haunted by the image of Jesus for the rest of his life. D uring this time of the year, various classical movies are shown on TV and Cable TV or even Netflix, all about the Passion and Death of Christ. Various directors and producers have put their talented craft to work over the past hundred years. This year, there is yet another movie out, entitled Risen. But the biggest block-buster came out 12 years ago, making it one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Mel Gibson produced the film, The Passion of the Christ, in Matera, Italy the same place where Pier Paolo Pasolini produced his black and white movie, Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (Gospel According to St. Matthew). Passion focuses on the last 12 hours of Jesus life leading to his crucifixion. Jesus speaks Latin and Aramaic without the aid of subtitles. Other classic movies about the life of Christ are as follows: 1961 King of Kings, one of the Biblical classics, was directed by Nicholas Ray and starred Jeffrey Hunter with a star-studded cast. 1964 Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini in black and white with practically unknown actors and actresses. But it became known as a very realistic depiction of a human Jesus. 1965 The Greatest Story Ever Told is another biblical classic based on the book by Fulton Ousler. It was directed by George Stevens and starred Max von Sydow. 1977 Jesus of Nazareth, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, with Robert Powell as Jesus, and Olivia Hussey as Mary. 1979 Jesus, directed by John Krish, and starring Brian Deacon, it was taken literally from the Gospel of St. Luke. 2000 Jesus, originally produced by CBS and directed by Roger Young, it starred Jeremy Sisto. It was a low-budget film distributed free throughout the world and translated into many languages. God bless you during this holy season of Lent, Father Julian

4 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Fr. Joseph s Corner... [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an e-mail to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] A MAN WAS SLEEPING at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light, and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. This the man did, day after day. For many years, he toiled from sunup to sundown, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Seeing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, Satan decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man s mind such as: You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn t budged. Why kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it, thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man even more. Why kill myself over this indeed? he thought. I ll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort, and that will be good enough. And that he planned to do, until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord. Lord, he said, I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have I Will Move the Rock by Sheilah Manuel asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing? To this the Lord responded compassionately, My friend, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient, and to push, and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. Then the Lord said, I, my friend, will move the rock. At times when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just simple obedience and faith in Him. By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains; but, it is still God who moves the mountain. God bless you and prayerful wishes, Fr. Joseph Spring Is Almost Upon Us! Luciano Dominguez s Hummingbird Maintenance team is hard at work cleaning up the grounds at both the New Church and the Historic Church. Luciana donates 50 percent of the actual costs to the parish, thus creating a significant landscape maintenance cost reduction. He and his team are also currently running drip lines in all the planter beds at the New Church, which will create a major savings in our irrigation costs. Please be sure to thank Luciano and his family for their generosity! Lastly, Luciano is again offering to donate 50 percent of retail costs to the parish for all parishioners who hire him for their spring lawn aerating. He may be reached at (541) 633-8195 or (541) 322-0419.
