Long Retrets: Anch Our Prctice A tlk by Mu BUDDHS MEDTATON SUPPLES Soeng Sunim t Providence Zen Center on Februry 12, 1989 n tlking bout long retrets, medittion, it is imptnt remember tht one cn t best tlk only bout one's own experiences n the lst five yers long retrets ech winter nd summer, hve hd the opptunity sit threemonth tht's plce strt, but ech person's experience of long retret is unique nd different from nyone else's experience At the sme time there is certin commonlity of elements so tht two persons shring the sme experience cn so understnd wht the other is tlking bout t is these common elements, in themselves nishing nd nurturing, which hve inspired nd motivted people undertke the rigous longretret prctice in ech succeeding genertion t might be useful know little bit bout how the trdition of these retrets cme in being in the histy of Buddhism The Buddh's lifestyle, f 45 yers of teching fter his enlightenment, ws tht of wndering monk He never settled down in one single plce lthough there were cities nd wns where he returned tech me regulrly The only time his trvels were brought sp during the three months of monsoon seson when rod conditions mde trvel impossible During this period the Buddh would settle down in one plce long with ll the disciples who were trveling with him wit out the rins During these ws three months the Buddh would expound the Dhrm the disciples every dy nd nswer their questions After his monkdisciples hd styed with him f one two "rins" the Buddh would encge them go out nd spred the Dhrm on their own RETAlL & WHOLESALE As result soon there were lrge number of monks trveling llover the sub Cushions Benches Gongs Altr Supplies Sttues Bells & Ptience, persevernce, fith, motivtion these re both the jney nd the fruit tht come out of threemonth long retret ncense Scrolls Rosries Books & Posters Tpes Jewelry continent of ndi, either singly in pirs During their own trvels these monks, o, encountered the hzrdous conditions of monsoon seson; so number of monks would find plce in ech region sty put during the monsoon seson, nd use these three months s time f intense personl prctice n the beginning the institution of monsoon retret ws these fully illustrted nd nnotted 41pge CATALOG, send $100 : SHASTA ABBEY BUDDHST SUPPLES PO Box 199, Shst, CA 96067 (916) 926 4208 Dept P, Mt nd not very tightly fmulted be institutionlized nd structured; mrginl Eventully whole body of rules nd regultions governing these retrets cme in plce The histy of long retrets in Chin, especilly Zen retrets, is not very cler But in the Ken trdition these retrets hve been n integrl prt of the trining of Zen monks t lest in this century t seems resonble ssume tht during the five hundred yers of persecution of Buddhism in Ke (the fteenth through the nineteenth centuries), when the Zen monks styed deep in the moun tins, they must hve hd some structure of long retrets sustin them in their isoltion When Ken Buddhism ws revived in the erly prt of this century by Zen Mster Kyong Ho, it ws lso time ofrevivl of the institution oflong retrets; this ws done most prominently by two of Zen Mster Kyong Ho's femost F monsoon retrets cme Clssified Ad The NFLATABLE ZAFU is ctully n infltble bechbll inside fine qulity zfu cover t's lightweight, convenient nd gurnteed Cols: Plum, Burgundy, Nvy Blue, Royl Blue, Blck, nd Green Cost: $1800 Free brochure on this nd trditionl medittion cushions Crolin FreightPid Mning Designs, Dept P,Box 31B, Hot Springs, NC 28743 (704) 6223729 Pge 21

disciples, Zen Mster Mng Gong nd Zen Mster Hn Am The estblishment of Dimond Hill Zen Monstery here in Rhode slnd hs been wonderful opptunity f both monks nd ly people connect with linege nd trdition through long retret ech winter nd summer Our techer, Zen Mster Seung Shn, did his erly monstic trining t Su Dok S nd Jung He S, which were temples where Zen Mster Mng Gong tught until his deth in 1946 A wd bout the connottion of the term "retret": when person who hs no fmilirity with spiritul trdition hers the wd "retret", it hs the connottion of escping from with with flish, he pointed the frmed picture of his techer nd nnounced, "HE is my prctice" Tht ws prcticlly the end of the converstion f me don't know nything bout his techer did f him but, ccding wht my friend ws telling me bout his own life, he ws going through ugh time, he hd been divced nd ws in bd spce During this difficult time, he strted seeing this "techer" nd mybe this techer sid certin things tht were helpful him nd creted some opening f him Tht's one wy of relting how the consciousness gets wht this guy trnsfmed n something mous militry prlnce, the term "retret" is synony generl being defeted nd withdrwing from the then sked him wht exctly ws the prctice he ws doing nd, bttlefield So there's negtive connottion in the populr mind bout the wd "retret" When we look t the wd itself we find it hs two prts: "re" nd "tret" "Re" mens gin one me time; so it mens treting selves one me time something Treting selves mens tking cre of selves with kindness nd compssion So long retret is time f reconditioning, re Zen retrets re very different kind of process The trdition of Zen does not depend on ny outside power You hve yself, within yself, nd ultimtely wht you left with is y own efft nd y own motivtion Wht you get out of retret is how much you pply yself wk with re "How does the consciousness get trnsfmed?" Tht's very imptnt, key question: How does the consciousness get trns trnsfming y consciousness You cnnot shift the respon sibility someone something else Why do we need wk on consciousness t ll? The bsic Buddhist teching is tht suffering comes from conditioning Without understnding this conditioning, it is not possible get out of the relm of suffering When we look t the culture ll round us, wht we see hppening children is tht from the ge of six months so, they re put in front of the television nd the prents leve, becoming either physiclly emotionlly unvilble these kids Both prents re wking fmed? nd go on live their own lives So ll the conditioning the child different is getting is from whtever goes on the TV, through commercils, fmtion, trnsfmtion dy severl of us were wtching video of Joseph Cmpbell's tlks with Bill Moyers, from the PBS series They were tlking bout myths nd the influence of myths on consciousness Very erly in the video Moyers sked Cmpbell, The other Throughout histy, different trditions hve employed techniques bring bout trnsfmtion in con sciousness Christinity offers very cler exmple of this process: it holds tht whtever trnsfmtion comes bout in n individul consciousness comes from God, comes from outside Mny trditions hve some kind of prescription bout somebody it f you from outside Lst week, hd visit from friend of mine whom hd something doing not seen in six yers knew him ten yers go in the erly dys of my prctice; he ws the kind of person who would go from one through the themes of violence nd "getting my wy" nd "it's oky wlk ll over other people s long it gets you buck" The bombrdment of these messges is so hevy nd insistent, on subtle nd gross levels, tht children hve no ol trining st out f themselves wht it's doing them When whole society becomes victim of this kind of conditioning, it produces certin kind of dults techers, docts, lwyers, leders of the business community who hve no ide of who they re ny deep sense of wht it mens be humn n older, trditionl societies, there were builtin rituls, He pointed the frmed picture of his techer nd nnounced, "HE is my prctice" nother sometimes Zen, sometimes Vipssn, sometimes Tibetn Buddhism; not ny rel serious prctice, mybe two three sht retrets yer But he could sty up ll prctice night nd tlk bout "spiritulity" So he clled me few weeks go nd ld me he ws now living in Bosn invited him come visit the Zen Center nd he cme lst week We were just tlking like uld friends bout wht he ws doing in Bosn, things like t1ldl He ld me he ws living with group of people nd they Well t1l,jlo$ uf techer ( young Westerner) who hd 11111: lund uf enlightenment in ndi My friend hd lt J ir picu» LS ul his techer with him nd showed these me Pge 22 like the Vision Quests in the Ntive Americn trditions, where people ok time reflect on these very intimte questions bout humn existence n culture, the bombrdment of trivil nd mnipultive infmtion is so insistent there is no time get wy from it People end up pursuing one sensul experience fter nother, hoping tht the next experience will do it f them, nd give them plesure tht will lst fever Of cse, this never hppens nd the serch f plesurble experiences never sps n this kind of serch, the tendency is get wy from ny kind of negtive experiences pin, confusion nd srow, nd pursue the plesurble; thus whole existence becomes rollercoster of grsping nd version As result, there is no rel understnding of wht's going on in lives, especilly t deeper levels When we go in long retret, especilly three months longer, it becomes the first time f mny of us tht we don't hve this bombrdment from outside; in the silence of long retret, we re fced del with the ccumulted junk of '

UfJ1VrE tesln NCFs minds long retret is very powerful ol, nd hopefully wht comes of this trining is wht Zen Mster Seung Shn clls "mindsitting" His teching style is n echo of ncient Chinese ptrirchs of Ch'n The Sixth Ptrirch, Huineng, tlked bout ttining "nomind" but he never tlked bout how go bout getting this "nomind" n own time, Krishnmurthi hs lso given the sme teching Zen Mster Seung Shn hs been teching "don't know" "don't mke nything" f fty yers; f most of us ttin this teching we need do lot of bodya t Zen lti01uturu ltlonustct l, The trdition of Zen does not depend ", on ny outside power sitting Mindsitting is the highest ttinment we cn spire, but without solid bckground of bodysitting, it becomes just nother gme Mny people red books on Zen spiritulity nd think they re free nd wise This is the one impression got from my friend when he cme visiting: ws tlking him s n old friend but he hd ll these ggressive questions: "Why do you shve y hed?" "Why do you wer these gry clothes?" "Why do you sit on cushion?" "Why do you hve sit three months?" His whole bsic ttitude ws: "Look, hve discovered the truth, this person, my techer, hs discovered it f me, he hs done this f me; my mind is free go nywhere, so why cn't you be free like me?" f you don't hve twenty thirty yers of solid experience of medittion behind you, it's very esy get on these trips And trip is trip; the trip of self proclimed spiritul mster is no different from the trip of soclled deluded person One of my fvite chrcters in the histy of Zen is Zen Mster Joju (C: Chochou) Joju 's life sty is very instructive He hd his first wkening when he met his techer Nm Cheon t the ge of eighteen After this initil opening, he styed with his techer f twenty yers until Nm Cheon died Only then did he feel free trvel ll over Chin f the next fty yers of his life nd engge the selfproclimed depts of Zen in dhrmcombt would not be surprised if Joju hd been tempted sy himself t the ge of eighteen " m free person" nd go on his own t is not n ccident tht Nrn Cheon nd Joju re the most brillint techerstudent duo in the histy of Zen, nd the fct tht Joju styed trin with Nm Cheon f twenty yers speks s much' f his own genius s f the genius ofnm Cheon we Locted on 200cre nture snctury in the Ctskill Mountins, ZMM offers perfect environment f deep prctice nd quiet introspection through vigous nd comprehensive trining progrm The Winter trining period offers full schedule of dily zzen, chnting wk prctice monthly weeklong medittion intensives (sesshin), personl study with Sensei John Dido Loi through tlks on Zen kons, seminrs privte interviews; fternoons f personl study (zzen rt body prctice reding) Residencies re vilble f periods of 1 week 13 months & 1 yer Residents lso tke prt n trining Retret series on Wellness using Buddhist, Toist & Tibetn trditions; CoMedittion; lkenobo ( clssicl Jpnese flower rrnging); Perils of the Pth (conferences expling pitflls on the spiritul jney) Study with contempry rt msters: Ginsberg, Anne Wldmn, Meredith Monk, Ntlie Goldberg, Kei Tkei Allen yer residentil wk f building resttion (One opptunity, n der hve the freedom where mind cn go nywhere, nyplce, hve hve solid grounding, n nch And this nch comes from solid specil retrets: scholrship vilble project Excellent f serious student of Zen) Cll write f me infmtion: ny other solid, focused prctice within the context of long retret The threemonth long retrets re very powerful vehicle in providing this ZEN MOUNTAN kind of nch prctice There is big difference between doing weekend Box 197PP, Mt Tremper, NY 12457 (914) 688 2228 sitting prctice, retret nd lmost the doing long retret i strted sitting Zen nd running longdistnce t time So f me there hs lwys been very interesting prllel between thletic trining nd Zen prctice The two threedy retrets re like looyrd dsh; you gther y physicl energies gether nd, in one single burst MONASTERY sme of ten fifteen seconds, you run y rce t tkes lot of grinding the teeth nd pplying brute strength But when you run mrthon do threemonth long retret you need different ttitude of mind nd different kind of hrnessing energy You need qulities like ptience nd persevernce nd fith nd motivtion n mrthon, it's one foot fter nother f 3 lfl 4 hs; so it's very different nd ofmindset from 100 yrd dsh n doing 2 3 dy retret you cn lso grind y teeth nd sit weekend but you cnnot grind y teeth f three months; the teeth will brek A threemonth retret is letting go, sitting fter sitting, h fter prmary pont reches 8,000 reders in the interntionl community of Buddhists nd other meditts F dvertising infonntion contct: Kwn Urn Zen School 528 Pound Rod Cumberlnd, R 02864 (401)6581476 Pge 23

plesurble experience; sometimes it's "if only could sleep f five extr minutes", nd then the seeking of this plesurble experience becomes nother hbit We live life through these h, letting go of ides bout selves, bout prctice, possible ttinment; you hve lern be kind bout yself, you hve find blnce within yself where you don't dydrem the whole retret wy drive yself crzy bout y lck of soclled "progress" Eventully these re the tht qulities ptience, persevernce, fith, motivtion become both the jney nd the fruit tht comes out of three month long retret A long retret is like being in prison, especilly when trying rerrnge lives round their hbits Our conditioning is such tht we don't hve the ols the trining relly investigte how much suffering the efft of keeping these hbits in plce is cusing us t my even come the point, when we hve prcticed you do group retret like we do here t the monstery The routine is ll set, you re cloistered nd the limits re very cler; hbits nd don't lives nd how even relize how much hbits control we re f long time, tht we cn look t certin hbit of s nd hve completely neutrl response it, neither crving it n voiding Only in this neutrlity is there possibility of reconditioning, f choosing wisely, nd f mking wholesome choices which will not result in suffering n long retret it's very esy see you cnnot go outside, you cnnot tlk other people, you get up t the sme time, sit t the sme time, et t the sme time, sleep it t the sme time This structure cn be very liberting fce Wking within the boundries of the retret structure, you cn go deep within yself nd discover y own strengths nd frilties Gndhi nd Lenin did some of their best writing while they were in prison; in tht setting they were fced exmine their own struggle nd wht they wnted contribute their long retret is gift selves, very precious gift Ultimtely, societies Another wy of being in prison is use this time s monstic experience By monstic, don' tmen the outside fm tht hbits need not control of shved hed certin kind of robes but the fct tht y life is becomes very simple There re no choices; nd hving no choice cn bring rest, perhps f the first time, tht mind which is model f everydy life nd be nurtured lwys, constntly looking f the next plesurble experience of the time in live in relly people hve different food krm, nd this becomes quite prominent in retret sitution We hd one person recently who signed on f three months but left fter three weeks One of the big issues f him ws food; he felt the food ws just o good! And f him good food ws problem t ws problem f him clims ent trip; were eting so much At some level, it ws n hve do by s tht experience we lose s much retret s 80% of energy through eyes sitution, you spend most of y time sitting on the cushion nd there is not much sensy dt coming in through the Grdully the internl chtter lso settles down; so the two big sces of the loss of energy re eliminted After some time, reverse process, the gining of energy, comes in plce Sitting in zzen doing chnting doing bows involves concentrted brething in nd out from the lower bdomen, the "hr" When we don't lose energy through eyes nd thinking, nd do prctice tht energize the "hr", it becomes tremendous eyes certin kind of underneth tht wnting, clrity we of threemonth retret selves, cught between choosing nd notchoosing, is tre mendous drin on nervous system Zen Mster Seung Shn This becomes quite evident in the re of food Differ simplicity nd everydy life we lose energy through eyes nd through thinking The internl chtter we crry on within down nd hs del with itself he wnted the life, nd tht it is possible When we hve good hbits, we don't lose energy Most When there is no stimuli coming in from outside, the mind settles tht other people use simple nd uncomplicted wy All reltionship with food but, something else ws going on which he willing look in Most of the time food is People invest so much in food s wy of not looking t certin things in their life Another kind of krm which becomes interesting wtch is sleep F me, even fter ten yers of living in Zen Center, sometimes it's still not esy get up in the mning ws not sublimtion sce of empowerment This empowerment is wht llows us schedule tht my seem brutlizing, dy fter dy follow without much problem This empowerment is lso something tht we uncover f selves within selves t is not given us by someone Most of the time it's oky but once in while this mind will pper tht sys, "Not dy" And tht's the function of "bckset driver" mind f we listen this bck set driver, we will lwys' of pece nd completeness tht comes over the prticipnt You get cught But if we cn tell it shut up nd move on with whteverneeds be done, it's not so strong n long retret, you don't hve ny choice; you hve get up t 4:30 m Hving no choice in the mtter llows the bckset driver tke rest from its usul routine of plying ll kinds of gmes When we choose not listen the bckset driver f three months, it cretes powerful trnsfmtions in mindbody system, not spek of the selfesteem tht comes from selfdiscipline We see clerly tht not Pge 24 wnting get up in the mning is the seeking of something outside One result of this empowerment is sense my hve noticed tht even if you sit f hlfnh every mning, you feel me t pece nd clm Mny people who hve st threemonth retrets hve ld me tht moments of their life were when some of the sitting on they They hppy moments why occurred t tht time nd plce; fter ll, nothing ws going on; there ws no stimuli, no input coming in from outside Wht ws hppening, insted, ws tht the mind ws quieting down, going deep within its primdil silence This is clled "stillness" Out hppiest their cushion hd no ide of were ' these "

of this stillness comes pece, wisdom, nd compssion Out of being tht tells us we re simplicity complete in ech moment; there is nothing tht needs be dded tken wy All we hve do in der be complete is be still nd silent, in mind nd body This stillness nd simplicity llows us look t how we relte food, sleep, clothes, sex, people we know Wht kind of sttement re we mking by wering certin kind ofclothes?
