Question 1 What is our only hope in life and death? That we are not our own but belong, body and soul, both in life and death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ. 1 Introducing the New City Catechism: 52 Questions and Answers for our Hearts and Minds Christians have used catechisms throughout the history of the church. It is with great joy and expectation that we are introducing and commending the New City Catechism to Living Praise in our mission to know, love and enjoy God forever. The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers. The teachings are related to God, human nature, sin, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and more. Living Praise plans to learn this catechism 1 question per week, going through it in a year. The New City Catechism is available free on the mobile app for iphone, ipad and Android devices. With the app, you can switch quickly between children s and adult s mode, read the related passage and short commentary, learn the song and use the suggested prayer. Very helpful app to download! All 52 songs (lyric videos are available on Youtube. Is Catechism A Biblical Practice? In his letter to the Galatians Paul writes, Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches (Gal. 6:6. The Greek word for the one who is taught is katechoumenos, one who is catechised. In other words, Paul is talking about a body of Christian doctrine (catechism that was taught to them by an instructor (here the word *catechiser*. The words all good things probably mean financial support as well. In this light, the word koinoneo which means to share or to have fellowship becomes even richer. The salary of a Christian teacher is not to be seen simply as a payment but a fellowship. Catechesis is not just one more service to be paid for, but is a rich fellowship and mutual sharing of the gifts of God. 1 https://www.crossway.org/articles/introducing-the-new-city-catechism/ 2 https://youtu.be/3te8vkoj2zu or simply search the new city catechism 3 Timothy Keller, Introduction, www.newcitycatechism.com Insert 2
If we re-engage in this biblical practice in our churches, we will find again God s Word dwelling in us richly (see Col. 3:16, because the practice of catechesis takes truth deep into our hearts, so we think in biblical categories as soon as we can reason. Catechisms have been used for centuries to train children and adults in their gospel faith. May God help us in Living Praise to love Jesus more truly, trust Jesus more deeply and follow Jesus more whole heartedly, as we learn from the New City Catechism. More Questions and Answers About The New City Catechism What s A Catechism? In the early Christian centuries a catechism (from the Greek word meaning teaching was a body of Bible truths to be taught to children and new converts. The form developed into a series of questions and answers, often to be recited aloud and committed to memory. The Reformation saw numbers of catechisms produced, and a good number of them are still used around the world today, as they put essential gospel teaching in clear and memorable language. Why Catechise? The Westminster catechism opens with this question, What is the chief end of man? Answer. Man s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. Catechism is a practice that will help Living Praise in our mission to know, love and enjoy God forever. A catechism is an excellent way of helping people to engage with and reflect on Christian truth. Pithily worded questions and answers lodge in the mind and sink into the heart. Who Catechises? The Westminster Shorter Catechism was published in 1647. Over one hundred pastors and educators met in London for sessions of study and conversation in order to frame doctrinal statements and directives for church government that they hoped would serve the national church in Great Britain. The achievements from the eventual ten years of meetings were far-reaching: the gatherings (known collectively as the Westminster Assembly, produced a confession of faith, two catechisms, and documents on public worship and church government. These have formed the governing documents of almost every English-speaking Presbyterian church, and have been used across the world since their first publication. Arguable the most used of them today is the Shorter Catechism. Why Then The New City Catechism? There are many ancient, excellent, and time-tested catechisms. Why expend the effort to write new ones? In fact, some people might suspect the motives of anyone who would want to 4 Lewis Allen, The Preacher s Catechism, p.21 5 Ibid. 6 Ibid. Insert 3
do so. However, most people today do not realise that it was once seen as normal, important, and necessary for churches to continually produce new catechisms for their own use. The original Anglican Book of Common Prayer included a catechism. The Lutheran churches had Luther's Large Catechism and Small Catechism of 1529. The early Scottish churches, though they had Calvin s Geneva Catechism of 1541 and the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563, went on to produce and use Craig s Catechism of 1581, Duncan s Latin Catechism of 1595, and the New Catechism of 1644, before eventually adopting the Westminster Catechism. Catechisms were written with at least three purposes: 1. To set forth a comprehensive exposition of the gospel 2. To address and counter heresies, errors, and false beliefs of the time and culture 3. To form a distinct people, a counter culture that reflected the likeness of Christ What Is The New City Catechism Based On? The New City Catechism is based on and adapted from Calvin s Geneva Catechism, the Westminster Shorter and Larger catechisms, and especially the Heidelberg Catechism. This gives good exposure to some of the riches and insights across the spectrum of the great Reformation-era catechisms, the hope being that it will encourage people to delve into the historic catechisms and continue the catechetical process throughout their lives. What Is The Structure Of The New City Catechism? The New City Catechism comprises only 52 questions and answers (as opposed to Heidelberg s 129 or Westminster Shorter s 107. There is only one question and answer for each week of the year, making it simple to fit into our church calendar and achievable for people with demanding schedules. It is divided into three parts to make it easier to learn in sections and to include some helpful divisions: Part 1: God, creation and fall, law (twenty questions Part 2: Christ, redemption, grace (fifteen questions Part 3: Spirit, restoration, growing in grace (seventeen questions" 7 Keller 8 Ibid. 9 Ibid. 10 Ibid.
