FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear friends in Christ, This is the time of year when we celebrate the First Holy Communion of our parish children. First Eucharist is a tremendously important moment in our life of faith. It marks the first time when we receive the Lord Jesus, as food, as nourishment for our body and our souls. The Lord Jesus knew that we would need something to sustain us spiritually and keep us close to him. He knew that as human beings we have a tendency to forget God and all he has done for us. Jesus knew that too often we forget who we are and need to be reminded of our deepest identity in God. Jesus knew that most of all we would need Him, Jesus, abiding and remaining in us, to transform us, to become more like Him. And so at the Last Supper, he gave us his Body and Blood for food and instituted the Holy Eucharist so that our deepest hunger might be satisfied. At St Jude, we celebrated First Communion for our children yesterday at a special Saturday morning Mass. At Holy Innocents, the children will be celebrating First Communion at Sunday Masses throughout the Easter Season. May the joy and eagerness that these children have at receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord for the first time, remind us of how important it is for us to receive the Lord every Sunday. I pray the Sunday Mass may always be the center of our week and of first importance in our lives. Jesus says, Unless you eat my body and drink my blood you will not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. John 6:54-57 Congratulations to all of our First Communicants! Many thanks to their parents, Godparents, and catechists and all who helped prepare them so well for this great sacrament. May their First Holy Communion be the beginning of a great love of Jesus in the Eucharist and desire to receive him every Sunday. Wishing you every blessing! Fr. Johnson We will be honoring our Blessed Mother, Mary with a crowning and rosary on Tuesday, May 8th at 7pm. Please join us! -2-

SOCIAL JUSTICE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE In today s gospel, Jesus presents the commandment to love one another a love that is like God s love. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. We are called to be like God the God who has a passion for love and justice, the God who is concerned for all of creation, the God who has a special concern for the poor. Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that Christian love is a love that goes beyond an affection for family and friends - a love that is more than a nice sentiment a love that is concerned in a very concrete way with people a love that involves respect for and learning from other people who might be different than ourselves -- a love that is concerned with justice and peace for all God s people a love that longs to create a world community of justice for all. In the first reading Peter comes to see that the Spirit is found in all people. In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. The love that comes from God is not limited to any one group or class of people. Racism, xenophobia, and all kinds of discrimination can have no part in the vision of Jesus. CARE FOR GOD S CREATION Tenet of Catholic Social Teaching On this earth there is room for everyone: here the entire human family must find the resources to live with dignity, through the help of nature itself God s gift to God s children and through hard work and creativity. At the same time we must recognize our grave duty to hand the earth on to future generations in such a condition that they too can worthily inhabit it and continue to cultivate it. What has your experience with nature taught you PRAYER TO BLACK MADONNA O Mother of the darkness Of the deep rich soil That brings forth new growth: Bless all your children Struggling for new ways Of being community for each other. O Mother of the darkness Of the infinite night sky That graces us with endless stars, Bless all your children Looking for hope and light To pierce the present shadows. O Mother of the darkness Of the creative womb That nurtures brilliant possibilities, Bless all your children Seeking wisdom yet to be experienced On paths still opening before us. O Mother of the darkness, Black Madonna, Madre Negra, Czarna Matka, who calls everyone In the human community my child, Bless us all and bring us all Gift and grace as we reach out For each other s hands. Amen. Jane Deren, PhD LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT In the depth of silence listen to the cry of the voiceless, listen to the groaning of the hungry, listen to the sigh of the oppressed, listen to the peace of justice, listen to the hope of a new world. -4-
