As we nurture our Polish Catholic heritage, we endeavor to be a community that welcomes everyone. FROM THE DEACON S DESK We just finished a great Holy Week and Easter weekend which couldn t be accomplished without your help. There are so many people to thank. All the many people who helped to decorate the church with the changes needed fromthursdaytofridayand againon Saturday. Those who set up, prepared and cleaned up for the simple supper on Holy Thursday. The choir and musicians who made our Easter masses so special and all who served as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar servers, Greeters, Ushers and those who participated in the processions and guarded the tomb. Also those who prepared and delivered the care packages for the home bound as well as the donations of personal care items for the Works of Mercy. I d also like to pass on a thank you from the Holy Name Society for the many great tasting donations of baked goods for their bake sale on PalmSundayweekend. It was a great success thanks to your generosity. Of course I need to thank all of our parishioners who support us throughout the year. As I celebrate my seventh anniversary as your Parish Life Coordinatoron WednesdayI need to thank you for the love and support you have given me during my time here. My wife and I have both developed strong friendships with many of you and feel greatly blessed to be a part of the Church of St. Adalbert. May Almighty God continue to bless all of you as I have been blessed by you. Deacon Joe Catholic Question of the Week: What is the connection between the Black Madonna and Divine Mercy? St. Luke the Evangelist, who was one of Jesus 70 disciples and a travel companion of St. Paul, painted the original Icon of the Black Madonna on the wood from Mary s table at her home in Ephesus where she lived the rest of her life with St. John after Jesus Ascension. That original icon was discovered by St. Helen, Emperor Constantine s mother, in 326 A.D., brought to Istanbul, and eventually to Częstochowa, Poland a thousand years later. St. Luke s Black Madonna was from the earliest days of the Church associated with the Divine Mercy flowing from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The prayers: Memorare and the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) were from those earliest days linked to devotion to the Black Madonna and belief in the Divine Mercy. There are well over 500 local variations in painting or sculpture of the Black Madonna on every continent of the world including: Our Lady of Paris, Our Lady of Aparecida (Brazil), Our Lady of Piat (Philippines), and our parish s own icon which hangs from the choir loft in our church.
