Issues And Answers In Jesus' Day has 2 ratings. Does God Answer Our Prayers? How does prayer work? Find out what God will answer When I was an atheist, I had a good friend who prayed often. She would tell me every week about something she was trusting God to take care of. And every week I would see God do something unusual to answer her prayer. Do you know how difficult it is for an atheist to observe this week after week? After a while, "coincidence" begins to sound like a very weak argument. The biggest reason is that she had a relationship with God. She wanted to follow God. And she actually listened to what he said. In her mind, God had the right to direct her in life, and she welcomed him doing just that! When she prayed for things, it was a natural part of her relationship with God. She felt very comfortable coming to God with her needs, her concerns, and whatever issues were current in her life. Furthermore, she was convinced, from what she read in the Bible, that God wanted her to rely on him like that. She pretty much exhibited what this statement from the Bible says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: They may know that God exists, and they might even worship God from time to time. Further, they have never received from God complete forgiveness for their sin. What does that have to do with it you ask? Here is an explanation. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. When people begin to ask God for something, what usually takes place? They begin with, "God, I really need your help with this problem They might not know that they can come into a relationship with God so that God will hear them. This is the foundation for God answering your prayer. How Does Prayer Work? You must first begin a relationship with God. Imagine that a guy named Mike asks the president of Princeton University to co-sign a car loan for him. Yet, if the daughter of this president asked her dad to co-sign a car loan for her, it would be no problem. With God, when the person is actually a child of God, when the person belongs to God, he knows them and hears their prayers. Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. Do you have a relationship with him that warrants God answering your prayers? Or is God pretty distant, pretty much just a concept in your life? For those who do know him and rely on him, Jesus seems to be wildly generous in his offer: Here is another qualifier: And if we know that he hears us -- whatever we ask -- we know that we have what we asked of him. And this is where it gets tough. We live within the limits of time and limits of knowledge. We have only limited information about a situation and the implications of future action on that situation. How an event plays out in the course of life or history is only something he knows. And he may have purposes far beyond what we could even imagine. So, God is not going to do something simply because we determine that it must be his will. What Does It Take? What is God Inclined to Do? The entire Bible is a description of the kind of relationship God wants us to experience with him and the kind of life he wants to give us. Here are just a few examples: He rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for [trust] him! Like someone rising out of his chair to come to your help, "He rises to show you compassion. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,"10 which is what Jesus did for us. And so, "If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Certainly people get sick, even die; financial problems are real, and all sorts of very difficult situations can come up. God tells us to give our concerns to him. Even as the situation remains dismal, "Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. When the whole world seems to be falling apart, God can keep us together. This is when a person can be very grateful that they know God. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Probably any Christian could list examples like this in their own lives. But if the circumstances do not improve, God can still give us his peace in the midst of it. Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. It Page 1
is based on the very character of God. A car traveling on the Golden Gate Bridge is fully supported by the integrity of the bridge. What gets the car safely to the other side is the integrity of the bridge, which the driver was willing to trust. In the same way, God asks us to trust his integrity, his character He says, "I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. He asks us to take any concerns to him in prayer and he will act upon it according to his will. As we deal with difficulties we are to cast our cares on him and receive from him a peace that defies the circumstances. The basis for our hope and faith is the character of God himself. The better we know him, the more apt we are to trust him. For more on the character of God, please see "Who is God? The first prayer God answers is your prayer to begin a relationship with God. Chapter 2 : Issues and Answers in Jesus' Day. Study Guide - Insight for Living Jesus's questions challenged listeners to become learners by forcing them to think. Through these questions, Chuck explores the hard issues we face today and applies the practical answers Jesus offered. Following are twelve passages of Scripture in which the Lord tells us that He wants us to pray to Him and that He wants to answer our prayers: If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. However, does this mean that God will answer our every prayer and that He is at our beckon and call to answer our requests? I think a lot of people have that idea and never consider that God has placed very specific restrictions or limits on how He answers us. If you preach one without the other you will mislead people. Lots of people wonder why their prayers are not answered and they think God does not hear them. Some even wonder if God is real. The problem with unanswered prayer does not lie with God but with us. There are prohibitions or conditions on having our prayers answered. First a person must be a child of God. God only hears one prayer from a lost man and that is the prayer of faith when an unsaved person asks for forgiveness and receives Christ as their Savior. God does not answer the prayers of those that reject Him as they Lord and Savior. We cannot come to God without belief or faith in God. We must come to the Lord with unwavering faith in Him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord" James 1: This does not mean that using the name of Jesus gives us some magical power. Jesus in Matthew 6: Therefore it is not the saying of the name of Jesus or addressing our prayer to Him that is the point here, but praying as a believer in Jesus Christ. It means that we come to God redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, not in our own name or in our own power or strength, but come in faith in the spirit of dependence on Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We cannot expect the Lord to answer prayer if we have unconfessed sin in our lives. Cannot expect the Lord to answer prayer when we are not living for the Lord. The prayers of the disobedient are an abomination to God. What are some clear commandments of God that we are to obey? Prayer, Bible study, witnessing, Christian leadership in the Home, teaching children, being an example, being faithful in attending church, tithing, confessing sin, and putting Christ first in your life. All these are clear commandments. One who is not faithful in these things are being disobedient and they will not be blessed of God. Cannot expect God to answer prayer if we are not doing His will. This involves more than just keeping the written commandments of the Lord. It involves doing what God wants us to do in our lives. But shun profane and vain babblings: And their word will eat as doth a canker: Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised; And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: Lots of people take comfort in the fact that Christians are not under the Law and we do not have to keep the Sabbath. But before the Law God set a principle in place that one day of the week was set aside to worship Him and for rest. The context is in uplifting each other in the Lord. There is nothing more discouraging than the church member who is unfaithful in their attendance. Everyone knows we all should worship the Lord on Sunday, and it hurts us to see our brothers and sisters in Christ disobeying God. You cannot be an encouragement to others when you are not faithful yourself. You want to kill a church, hinder or stop the work of God, keep souls from being saved, then just stop attending church. Folks putting Christ first is the best thing we can do. That means before our pleasures whatever they might be. For some it might be some special service. Is God leading you in a particular thing, to do? Has God given you the privilege to do some job at church and are you faith in it. Are we willingly doing it? God does not answer the prayers of those who are not at peace with each other. We need to be a peace with one another to have our prayers answered. Arguing, bickering, fighting in the home will destroy it. It will rob a home of peace and joy. It will destroy the peace and security of the marriage. I have seen so many families destroyed and children lives messed up because the husband and wife would not get along. Notice I did not say it was because the husband and wife could not get along The wonderful thing Page 3
is, that in Christ Jesus marriage problems can be overcome Do you realize the prayers that fathers and mothers for their children are not answered when they do not dwell in peace and honor one another. The husband might say, "Well, my wife is the problem she is always fighting with me. If one partner does this Model prayer "For give us our debts as we forgive our debtors" Matt. God will honor that. We need to come boldly. We must be persistent in our prayers. In the parallel account of the Lord teaching the Model prayer in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus followed it with a parable: And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you" Luke Clearly the Lord is teaching us that we should be persistent in our prayers. There have been things that Christians have prayed for, for years and God in His time answered. It is not that God does not want to answer and that He wants to withhold the answer to our prayers, but God knows the time when it is best. Our persistent shows our faith in God and His promise to answer prayer. I like what Barnes says in his commentary on this passage: He leaves them to persevere for months or years, until they feel entirely their dependence on him, until they see that they can obtain the blessing in no other way, and until they are prepared to receive it. Often they are not prepared to receive it when they ask it at first. They may be proud, or have no just sense of their dependence, or they would not value the blessing, or it may at that time not be best for them to obtain it. But let no one despair. If the thing is for our good, and if it is proper that it should be granted, God will give it. Let us first ask aright; let us see that our minds are in a proper state; let us feel our need of the blessing; let us inquire whether God has promised such a blessing, and then let us persevere until God gives it. Isaiah speaking to disobedient Israel gave them the promise of God. The promise of God. What ever the past If there is sin and unfaithfulness in your life, now is the time to confess it to the Lord and have Him cleanse you from it. God is the God of new beginnings. Thank the Lord He loves us so much he does not scold and promises to give his help to us liberally If you liked the message and would like to see sermons posted regularly would you let be know?
