Fr. Ihor Shved о. Ігор Швед Phones: Cell: 431-996-2343 Home: 204-889-2083 Email Address: stbasilpriest@gmail.com Dear sisters and brothers, We have beautiful the tradition of preparing for Christmas. The time before Christmas is known as the pre-nativity period. This period is called the Nativity Fast, or sometimes known as St. Philip s Fast or Пилипівка, because it starts after the day of the Feast of St. Philip on November 14. The Fast lasts for 40 days until Nativity. On the day of the Feast of St. Philip we have a nice gospel (John 16, 43-51) reading. Some good thoughts about this gospel, and how it connected to St. Philip s Fast I took from Father Andrew Summerson (Catholic News Service). Perhaps the Lord s encounter with Philip can teach us something about the special character of the pre-nativity period. SUNDAY LITURGY 10:00 a.m. (Rosary at 9:30 am) Office Hours (Mon-Wed-Fri) 10:00 am 1:00 pm CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS By arrangement MARRIAGES By appointment at least six months in advance WEBSITE: www.saintbasilwpg.ca PARISH OFFICE EMAIL ADDRESS: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: bulletin@saintbasilwpg.ca In the Gospel of John, Christ calls Philip with the simple words: Follow me (John 1:43).The Lord offers little explanation and simply invites Philip to join him on his journey. Soon after, Philip speaks about Jesus to Nathanael, who is sitting beneath the fig tree, explaining, We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth (John 1:45). The Philip s Fast is an opportunity to leave the fig tree of our cynicism and to walk with the Lord, who promises us the heavenly vision. Philip understands the incredible novelty of Christ, yet Philip s excited explanation is met with Nathanael s cynicism: Can anything good come from Nazareth? (John 1:46). There is a little Philip and a little Nathanael in each of us. As baptised Christians, we have been found by the Lord and his words, Follow me, rest upon all of us. While liturgy and preaching repeat Philip s initial excitement, Nathanael s cynicism (In relation to fasting, for example) often lays its snares on the hearts of well-intentioned Christians.

Prayer Yet, as Christ makes his dwelling in Nazareth to dwell among men, so also does he remain with the church to be with us until the end of the ages. Hence, something good can come from Nazareth and from the Church Christ himself, the source of all goodness. So, the Fast also is a 'goodness' of the Сhurch. Fasting can help as to follow Christ by embracing the four forms of Christian praxis. Below we offer some suggestions for ways to put into practice the four forms Christian praxis or asceticism during the Nativity fast. Everyone can take at least one suggestion. Spend 15 minutes in the morning and evening in prayer each day. Display an icon of the Nativity in the prayer corner of your house or room and spend 10 minutes each day meditating on the saving mysteries surrounding the story of Christ s Birth. Receive the Mystery of Repentance (Confession) at least once during the fast. Use the prayer guide with family or friends. Fasting Abstain from meat on Fridays. Fast from certain foods, such as soft drinks (which have way too much sugar anyway), and alcohol or candy. Fast from select forms of entertainment (television, movies, radio, internet, novels, etc.). Almsgiving Give your time, talent and/or treasure to a parish outreach or a special charity. (Our organizations have projects, there is Welcome Home, and others) Increase your parish offering for the season. (That's true, your own parish needs funds too) Clean out your house of any excessive items or possessions and share them with the poor and needy. Purchase gifts for homeless or needy children or families. Love Meditate on the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes and identify one or two of these to put into practice each week. Examine your conscience each night, asking for forgiveness from God or others as needed. Find opportunities to share your faith with others. It is not easy to follow those suggestions But, is it easy to go shopping before Christmas? Fr. Ihor To prepare this I also used http://www.royaldoors.net

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS Hello brother Knights and parishioners we have a busy month ahead. We have 3 coffee houses this month. Pancake Breakfast on November 12, 2017 after Divine Liturgy. Our last perogy supper for 2017 will be held on November 24,2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with peeling of potatoes on Monday Nov. 20, 2017 @ 6:00 pm. Welcome all to come and enjoy our perogies prepared by our Knights, their wives, and ladies from our ladies league. Respectfully submitted by Grand Knight Andrew Labay Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child distributes shoeboxes to children all over the world, bringing hope, comfort, and the Good News of Jesus. Once again, our parish is collecting items for Christmas Shoeboxes going to children in Ukraine. Donations must be small enough to fit in a regular-sized shoebox: a small wow toy, school supplies, hygiene items, and cold weather items, such as gloves, toques, scarves, slippers and socks. We cannot accept toothpaste, playdoh, candy, glue, or any war-themed toys. The students and teachers of our catechism program will pack and deliver the boxes on November 18th, so donations must be placed in the specially-marked collection box in the church before then. Monetary donations are also accepted, as we will shop for items to balance each gift box. We thank our UCWL, who generously continue to pay the $10 fee per box, which goes towards shipping as well as religious programs for children in Ukraine. This is our opportunity to spread God's love across the miles and to offer prayers of peace. Thank you and bless you for giving. Winter Clothing Drive As the weather chills, the need for warm outdoor clothing increases. There are many in our city without proper winter wear. At the back of the church is a box labelled "Winter Clothing Collection". Please bring whatever winter items you can spare - boots, mitts, gloves, hats, snow pants, jackets/coats and scarves. Clothing donations (for children and adults) will be collected from now until February, and will be divided between the Main Street Project and Siloam Mission. Please let your children be involved in the collecting of donated items from home, as this is an important lesson in giving to those less fortunate. Thank you.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming Saturday Liturgies. This is in addition to Fr. Ihor s daily 10:00 am Liturgies. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. Matthew 19:13-14 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. The Group of Frogs As a group of frogs were traveling through the woods, two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs crowded around the pit and saw how deep it was, they told the two frogs that they re was no hope left for them. However, the two frogs decided to ignore what the others were saying and they proceeded to try and jump out of the pit. Despite their efforts, the group of frogs at the top of he pit were still saying that they should just give up. That they would never make it out. Eventually, one of the frogs took heed to what the others were saying and he gave up, falling down to his death. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, Did you not hear us? The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. Moral of the story: People s words can have a big effect on other s lives. Think about what you say before it comes out of your mouth. It might just be the difference between life and death. https://wealthygorilla.com/10-most-inspirational-short-stories/3/ LET US ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER ON OUR PARISH DURING PYLYPIVKA FAST!
