Eparchy of Saskatoon Family and Life Office Bulletin: September 2014 The future of the world passes through the family Familiaris Consortio, 79 September 2014: In our Bulletin Insert for May/June 2014 we spoke about how much parents matter in the lives of their children, not just to provide for their material, social and psychological well being but also for their 'spiritual' well being. Research repeatedly confirms this-but the question still remains as to how parents can pass on the faith to their children in a world where the culture does not support a Sacramental/Liturgical worldview. The other problem that arises is the practical concerns of all family members in living their faith in today's world. Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth is an Eparchial initiative that is being kicked off in Saskatoon on September 19/20, 2014. It is not just another program but a whole new way of looking at ourselves as church -beginning at the level of the 'Domestic church', and working towards the Vibrant Parish. Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth will introduce a process for changing the way communities of faith partner with parents so that the Catholic faith can be more effectively passed on to the next generation of disciples. Strong Catholic Families events: a. Inspire parents to embrace the responsibility for the faith growth of their children and family as a domestic church, and b. Motivate parishes/schools to support and equip parents and families in passing the faith onto their children and deepening the practice of faith within their homes. The Diocese of Saskatoon and the Eparchy are joint sponsors of the kickoff event in Saskatoon. Don't miss this opportunity! (For those outside of Saskatoon-Strong Catholic Families will be coming to your parish or a parish near you, soon.) For more information check out the Eparchy website or the Family and Life Office: http://www. s k e p a r c h y. o r g / f a m i l y a n d l i f e /? p a g e _ i d = 903 Exaltation of the Holy Cross: A Family Tradition Worth Revisiting In a world where no one understands suffering, the incredible beauty and victory of the Life Giving Cross makes no sense whatsoever. As Christians we know that the meaning of the Cross is that through it Christ defeated death, so it is the symbol of our salvation. However, the fact that the Cross of Christ has profound impact on our daily life is often missed. All humanity is subject to suffering. But in Christ that pain is given meaning and hope. Scripture often talks about the paradox of our faith wherein joy can be borne from sorrow. In Romans 5:3-5 the apostle Paul says We glory, then in our afflictions, because we know that affliction begets patience, and patience makes for proving, and proving hope; nor does hope put us to shame, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Sprit who is given to us. As St. John Paul II reminds us, in his Apostolic Letter on Human Suffering, In Christ's cross it is not only that the redemption is completed through the passion; but human suffering is itself redeemed. Christ suffered for us out of Love, in this great love our suffering is linked to love, and in love, life and hope abound. So proudly display the crucifix of Christ in your home and icon corners. Decorate it and venerate it on this feast. Everyone suffers, but because of our faith we are not alone. Christ is with us in all our suffering, He endures it with us and in the Cross of Christ the ultimate victory is found. Remind your children that all our suffering can have meaning as we can, in love, unite our sufferings with Christ's. To your Cross O Master we bow in Veneration, and we Glorify Your Holy Resurrection! SOBOR - For those of you who were able to attend the Eparchial SOBOR in May you may be wondering why you have not seen anything online or heard about the follow up to the participant questions and responses. Please accept my apologies for the delay and be advised that the Q and A promised (as well as the questions asking for personal responses) should be received or seen on the eparchial website before the end of the month. The SOBOR itself is a three-part process that included the Families Evangelizing Families event, the Eparchial Survey and the Parish Pastoral Plans. A document that synthesizes all three is being prepared and will be ratified at second SOBOR Meeting in October of 2014. Thank you for your patience-it has been a very busy summer.
