NEW TESTAMENT REVIEW

Transcription:

Who did the miracles in Acts? In the Bible, many miracles are done by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament there were prophets who performed miracles (i.e. Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Elisha) and there were prophets that did not perform miracles ( i.e. Abraham, David, Samuel, Daniel). In the New Testament the Apostles were Chosen by Jesus Himself and given the power after the Holy Spirit came upon them to do miracles. Acts 1:1-8 Acts 1 Apostles were chosen by Jesus Himself - Matt 10:1-4 ; Luke 6:12-16 ; Acts 1:2 Notice in Mt 10:1 Mt 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Notice here Jesus gives them power-exousia-authority to do miracles before the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2. Acts Chapter 1 Ac 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Jesus is speaking to the apostles 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon 1

you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The apostles go to Jerusalem and wait in the upper room Drop to verse 15 Acts 1:15 notice that the word disciples is used for the 120. Disciples were followers but Apostles were chosen by Jesus himself Matt 10:1-5; Luke 6:13-16 15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Acts 1:16-20 Peter and the Apostles are about to select someone to replace Judas to fulfill the Scriptures Ps 69:25; Ps 109:8. Is this the only apostle that was not chosen by Jesus Himself? Nay, but Matthias was chosen by Jesus Acts 1:24-26 16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. Ps 69:25; Ps 109:8 Acts 1:21,22 Peter gives more qualifications of an apostle 21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. 2

23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Acts 2 Apostles did the Miracles- were baptized with the Holy Spiritthis was visible, could be seen, Acts 2:1-4,43 Acts Chapter 2 Ac 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (the apostles) were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they (the apostles) were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them (the apostles) cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them (the apostles ). 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. It was the apostles that did the miracles! Drop to verse 14 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven (there were twelve apostles), lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: Drop to verse 22 Peter preaches the Gospel: The Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ. 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Death. 3

Drop to verse 27 Here, Peter takes the quote from Psalms 16:10 where the Hebrew word for hell is Sheoul, meaning grave. The same word Sheoul is used for grave in Ps 30:3; 31:17; 49:14,15; 88:3, 5, 11; 89:48; and 141:7. 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell Burial, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Drop to verse 30 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him David, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Resurrection Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell the grave, neither his flesh did see corruption. Drop to verse 37 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Jesus is Lord! 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Notice that knowing the Gospel is not enough. In order to obey the Gospel you must know : 1. What the Gospel is, and 2. How to obey it. You cannot possibly obey the gospel if you don t know these facts. Peter tells them what they must do: If the gospel is Death, Burial and Resurrection ( of Christ), How does one obey Death, Burial and Resurrection? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent Death to sin, and be baptized represents burial (Rom 6:4) every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. There is no resurrection without the Holy Spirit. ref Rom 6:1-4. Drop to verse 41 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. You receive the Gospel by obeying it. 4

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. The apostles did the miracles. Important: Whenever a prophet of God did a miracle, It came with a word from God! It was always message based. The Apostles had Doctrine. Acts 6 The seven were filled with the Holy Spirit before the Apostles laid their hands on them, only then could they do miracles. Acts 6:5-8. Acts Chapter 6 Ac 6:1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. The seven already had the dorea gift of the Holy Spirit received upon obedience to the Gospel. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. The 9 miraculous Charisma gifts spoken of in I Corinthians 12: 8-10, 5

were given by the laying on of hands by the apostles. Ref Rom 1:11 Acts 8 The imparting of the supernatural gifts by the laying on of hands by the Apostles could be seen -visible, Acts 8:14-19. Acts Chapter 8 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. 5 Then Philip which was one of the seven went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city. Verses 9-11 Simon the sorcerer deceives many: 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: The seven could do miracles but could not impart the Supernatural Spiritual gifts. Only the apostles could do so. 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy 6

Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, This could be seen 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. This gift could not be purchased with a donation, no matter how much you put in the offering plate. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. Drop to verse 26 Note: Philip preaches the Gospel to the Eunuch from Isaiah 53:8-10 26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: Isaiah 53:7 33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. Isaiah 53:8 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Isaiah 53:8-10: Prophecy of the Gospel 7

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Acts 10 The house of Cornelius were baptized with the Holy Spirit but they were not Apostles and did not have the power(authority given to the Apostles by Jesus) to impart the charisma gifts by laying on of hands. God poured out the Holy Spirit to them to show the Jews that Salvation was given to the Gentiles also. Ac 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift (Dorea) of the Holy Ghost. Acts Chapter 10 An angel sends Cornelius to Peter Peter preaches the Gospel to the house of Cornelius (Gentiles) Drop to verse 32 32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee. 33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. 34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 8

37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Notice: Peter being filled with the Holy Spirit commanded them to be baptized. They being filled with the Holy Spirit obeyed baptism. Do you know of anybody who had the Holy Spirit and had lost it because of disobedience? I.e. King Saul, Samson Acts 4:29-31 The Apostles prayed and asked God and God answered their prayers. The place was shaken and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and spake the Word with boldness. These were believers who had already received the Dorea gift of the Holy Spirit upon obedience to the Gospel in Acts Chapter 2. 9

Conclusion: In the Book of Acts, it was the Apostles that did the miracles and whomsoever they imparted the Spiritual Supernatural Miraculous Charisma Gifts. The Supernatural Gifts were not a requirement for salvation. We don t have to perform miracles to be saved. The Dorea gift is required. This is also called the Seal Sphragizo of the Holy Spirit (the indwelling). Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, The seal unto redemption. If we don t have this seal, we will not be redeemed. Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. How do we receive this Gift/Seal? Upon obedience to the Gospel. 10
