Gospel Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it (Mark 10:2-16 [2-12]). HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. In his message for this year s celebration on October 21, Pope Francis explains that life is a mission. Each one of us is called to reflect on this fact: I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world (Evangelii Gaudium 273), he writes. Focusing on young people, he notes: In speaking to you, I also address all Christians who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God. I invite all of us in this diocese to see World Mission Sunday as a special moment to live out the mission we share as God s children, the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. I encourage you to be a voice for mission through your prayers and through the help that you are able to give in support of the priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders who work tirelessly, day in and day out, proclaiming the Gospel, building the Church, and serving the poor in more than 1,100 mission dioceses in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. The prayers and material aid generously given to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday, the Pope explains, continue to support the preaching of the Gospel to every nation, thus contributing to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for knowledge of the truth. Our Diocese has a special concern for the missions as currently we sponsor five mission trips a year: two University mission trips to Bolivia and the Philippines and three medical and construction trips to Bolivia, the Philippines and to the Navajo Nation. We are also exploring new mission sites which we hope to begin in 2019. A portion of this important collection also supports our mission efforts. Mission revitalizes faith, Pope Francis reminds us, quoting Saint Pope John Paul II in Redemptoris Missio (#2). We NEED YOU! When Our Phone Rings, Will You Answer It? Somewhere in the world, a lost soul is dialing our toll-free number hoping to find help. Will you answer that call? If God is calling you to help others, consider becoming a phone counselor for The Upper Room Crisis Hotline. We are a Faith-Based Hotline in the Catholic tradition providing counseling and referral assistance to anyone struggling to find his or her way back to God. We help everyone regardless of their faith or background. To be a phone counselor, you don t need experience in mental health or phone work, although it is helpful. What you will need is a love for people and a strong desire to help the lonely, frightened, and confused. We provide all the training.
