Firecracker Salisbury If you know of any hamfest that should be listed and is not, please let me know so it can be included in the next edition. Hamfests need your support and attendance to survive! www.mocars.org www.facebook.com/nc4ml President s Column Well, it is time for another president s column but I find it hard to write about things that are relevant since it has been so many months since I have been able to be with you. Unfortunately, I fear it will be another couple of months before I have clearance from my doctor. He isn t so worried about the heart at this point but he is afraid that my infection will return or I will catch another, given that the experience left my immune system very low. As for me, I just want to get out! There will be an exam session this coming Saturday starting at 9AM at the Health Department. Prior to that meeting the examiners will meet at Pete s for Breakfast at about 7:00AM. Anyone is welcome to join us. I will be able to attend the exam session this time as we do not expect a big crowd. The monthly meeting is at the Health Department at 8PM. Prior to the meeting the club and friends will meet at Pete s in Carthage to enjoy a good supper. Unfortunately I will not make it to the meeting. However, Cindy (KM4BLC) will be there and report to me on what happens. Her report together with Dean s excellent minutes will bring me up to date. I expect that there will be reports on events since the last meeting on things such as the scout camp and Buggyfest as well as some final planning for Field Day which is fast approaching. After reading a particularly gory but true story in my electric co-op s monthly magazine about four guys who were moving a trailer by hand, near but not under a 7000 volt power line, I want to again warn everyone to be particularly careful when working on antennas anywhere in the vicinity of any kind of line. In the magazine it reported that the trailer had a CB whip attached and when they got within about 10 feet of the line the power arced to the antenna and used the four guys as a ground. They were burned beyond recognition and a fifth individual who tried to help was also electrocuted (though not burned). I had never realized that power would arc that way at that distance but it really opened my eyes. Be CAREFUL out there! 73, Charles Wackerman

This arrangement allowed local communications on 2 meters and longer range communications on 20 meters with several contacts made by scouts.
