C: Amen. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Silence for personal reflection.) P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his only Son to die for us and, for his sake,
forgives us all our sins. In the name of Jesus Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THE GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. KYRIE ~ P. 78 (LBW) (Spoken by Leader; Response by Congregation is Sung) HYMN OF PRAISE ~ GLORY TO GOD ~ P. 79 (LBW) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. O Lord, help your people to avoid the infection of the evil one, and with pure hearts to follow you, our only Lord. Grant this, we pray, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Please sit CHILDREN S SONG ~ THIS IS THE DAY CHILDREN S SERMON FIRST READING: ISAIAH 50:4-10 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how
to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. 6 I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. 7 But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. 8 He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. 9 Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. 10 Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. PSALM 116:1-9 (TO BE READ RESPONSIVELY) 1 I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. 2 The cords of death entangled me; the grip of the grave took hold of me; I came to grief and sorrow. 3 Then I called upon the name of the Lord: O Lord, I pray you, save my life. 4 Gracious is the Lord and righteous; our God is full of compassion. 5 The Lord watches o ver the innocent; I was brought very low, and he helped me. 6 Turn again to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has treated you well. 7 For you have rescued my life from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. 8 I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. 9 I believed, even when I said, I have been brought very low. In my distress I said, No one can be trusted.
SECOND READING: JAMES 3:1-12 1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please Stand GOSPEL VERSE ~ P. 83 (LBW) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. GOSPEL: MARK 9:14-29 P: The Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Please look up the Gospel reading in your Bible. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Please Sit
