January 6, 2019 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.

Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Joe Novenson, pastor of senior adults * Call to worship taken from Psalm 18 and Psalm 119 Leader: I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. All: He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. Leader: The way of the Lord is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? All: The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! I will praise you among the nations, O Lord; I will sing praises to your name. Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations. * Hymn of praise Across the Lands You re the Word of God the Father from before the world began. Ev ry star and ev ry planet has been fashioned by your hand. All creation holds together by the power of your voice. Let the skies declare your glory; let the land and seas rejoice! Refrain: You re the Author of creation; you re the Lord of ev ry man; and your cry of love rings out across the lands. Yet you left the gaze of angels, came to seek and save the lost and exchanged the joy of heaven for the anguish of a cross. With a prayer you fed the hungry; with a word you calmed the sea; yet how silently you suffered, that the guilty may go free! Refrain With a shout you rose victorious, wresting vict ry from the grave and ascended into heaven, leading captives in your way.

Now you stand before the Father, interceding for your own; from each tribe and tongue and nation you are leading sinners home! Refrain text and music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend 2002 Thankyou Music, LLC, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. #152036 * Prayer of adoration and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Affirmation of the authority of Scripture Leader: What we call Holy Scripture, or the written Word of God, includes all the books of the Old and New Testaments. The books commonly called the Apocrypha, because they are not divinely inspired, are not part of the canon of Scripture, and therefore have no authority in the church of God. All: The authority of Holy Scripture does not depend upon the testimony of any man or church, but entirely upon God, its author (who is truth himself). We therefore should receive it because it is the Word of God. Leader: The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him. All: Thanks be to God for the gift of Holy Scripture. based on the Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.3-1.4 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Speak, O Lord Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your Holy Word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness; that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all your purposes for your glory. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility; test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of pow r that can never fail let their truth prevail over unbelief. continued

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we ll stand on your promises, and by faith we ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till your church is built, and the earth is filled with your glory. text and music by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend 2005 Thankyou Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. #152036 * Scripture reading from 2 Timothy 3:14-17 Mary Kaufmann (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Brad Cobb (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Pastoral prayer Continuing in the Truth of God s Word Brian Salter, lead pastor Invitation to the Lord s Table Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians who have previously been admitted to the Lord s Table, by the elders of this or any Gospel-proclaiming church, to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships. Hymn of confession God, Be Merciful to Me God, be merciful to me, on thy grace I rest my plea; plenteous in compassion thou, blot out my transgressions now; wash me, make me pure within, cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. I am evil, born in sin; thou desirest truth within. Thou alone my Savior art, teach thy wisdom to my heart; make me pure, thy grace bestow, wash me whiter than the snow. Sinners then shall learn from me and return O God to thee; Savior, all my guilt remove, and my tongue shall sing thy love; touch my silent lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall praise accord. text from Psalm 51; The Psalter, 1912 Silent prayers of confession

Assurance of God s pardoning grace based on Colossians 1 Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Words of institution Communion affirmation Leader: God of all good, you have prepared for us a feast; and because we are unworthy in ourselves to sit down as guests, we wholly rest on the merits of Jesus and hide ourselves in his righteousness. All: In this supper we remember the agony of the cross and the cost of redemption. We rejoice in your eternal love, boundless grace, and infinite compassion. Leader: We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. based on The Valley of Vision prayer, The Lord s Supper pg. 195 Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements Songs for meditation Mercy Speaks by Jesus Blood Mercy speaks by Jesus blood; hear and sing, ye sons of God; justice satisfied indeed; Christ has full atonement made. Jesus blood speaks loud and sweet; here all deity can meet, and, without a jarring voice, welcome Zion to rejoice. All her debts were cast on me, and she must and shall go free. Peace of conscience, peace with God, we obtain through Jesus blood; Jesus blood speaks solid rest; we believe, and we are blest. Should the law against her roar, Jesus blood still speaks with power, All her debts were cast on me, and she must and shall go free. text by William Gadsby, 1773-1844

My Heart Is Filled with Thankfulness My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who bore my pain; who plumbed the depths of my disgrace and gave me life again; who crushed my curse of sinfulness and clothed me in his light and wrote his law of righteousness with pow r upon my heart. My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who walks beside; who floods my weaknesses with strength and causes fears to fly; whose ev ry promise is enough for ev ry step I take, sustaining me with arms of love and crowning me with grace. My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who reigns above, whose wisdom is my perfect peace, whose ev ry thought is love. For ev ry day I have on earth is given by the King; so I will give my life, my all, to love and follow him. text and music Keith Getty and Stuart Townend 2003 Thankyou Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic.# 152036 * Prayer of thanksgiving * Hymn of praise I Will Glory in My Redeemer * Benediction I will glory in my Redeemer, whose priceless blood has ransomed me. Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails, and hung him on that judgment tree. I will glory in my Redeemer, who crushed the power of sin and death. My only Savior before the holy Judge: the Lamb who is my righteousness; the Lamb who is my righteousness. I will glory in my Redeemer, my life he bought, my love he owns. I have no longings for another, I m satisfied in him alone. I will glory in my Redeemer; his faithfulness my standing place. Though foes are mighty and rush upon me, my feet are firm, held by his grace; my feet are firm, held by his grace. I will glory in my Redeemer, who carries me on eagles wings. He crowns my life with loving kindness; his triumph song I ll ever sing. I will glory in my Redeemer, who waits for me at gates of gold, and when he calls me it will be paradise, his face forever to behold; his face forever to behold. text and music by Steve and Vikki Cook 2001 Sovereign Grace Worship ARR, ICS, UBP, CCLI Lic.#152036

2 Timothy 3:14-17 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
