January 2019 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Missionary from Texas Serves in West Virginia Program Our January 6 communion offering will support the work of the Rev. Rosemary Grattan, a missionary with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and an elder in the Rio Texas Annual Conference. Rev. Grattan is mentoring program coordinator at the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling, West Virginia. She is from Austin, Texas, and has served as a pastor in Austin and at First United Methodist Church in Sinton, Texas. CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS As I studied, I began to show an interest in preaching and teaching and became a certified lay speaker. Her call to mission service involves a growing hunger to minister to people outside the church in a global sense. She said, I feel a call from God to literally go out into the world and preach the good news of the coming reign of God, eternal life and salvation. in tangible ways that involve missions of mercy As a UMC Church and Community Worker, Rev. Grattan, r e- sponds to God s call to ministry among the poor and disenfranchised in rural and urban areas throughout the United States. They work to change social inequities of poverty, racial injustice, and domestic violence. The House of the Carpenter helps an economically depressed, but formerly prosperous, coal -mining area in West Virginia and Ohio. Programs are geared toward children, including those for whom grand-parents are primary caregivers. One goal is to help children and families feel safe and cared for. Rev. Grattan s father was a UMC pastor. She said, I began ministry as a young adult teaching Sunday school to little ones. I began to take a greater interest in the Bible and studied in depth before entering the process for ordained ministry. as well as education and community development. I feel called by God to minister to the least, the last and he lost, for example, the disenfranchised and those who may never step inside the church doors on a regular basis. Please prayerfully consider giving to her important mission program January 6. Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair

Beach Treasures Page 5 January 2019 Third Sunday Potluck Luncheon All are invited bring a dish to share! Our monthly potluck will be held immediately after the worship service on Sunday, January 20, 2019. All are welcome to our Potluck Meal! Kathy Bassett, Hospitality Chair Thank you from the church staff for our 2018 Christmas Bonus! At this time of the year everyone is in a thankful mood. I want each of you to know how much your congregation is appreciated. Month after month you generously give to the Feed the Kids Ministry. These children have no means to thank you. Many of them don t know who you are. But they know there is someone out there who cares enough about them to help them get through the weekend. You don t judge them in any way. You help them without questioning. So, when you are enjoying your Thanksgiving meal and leftovers, please know I am praying for each of you who helps these children. I am praying our Lord will bless you and keep you safe. And I am praying our Almighty God and Father will bestow you with many more years of a good, healthy life, because of the kind acts you show toward HIS children. On behalf of the 73 children your congregation feeds each week, I thank you.
