CALL TO WORSHIP GAVIN STREB L: Come let us walk in the light of God. P: We are glad to go into the house of the Lord. L: Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers. P: Let us put aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. L: Keep awake, for you don t know which day your Lord is coming. P: Let us join together to worship our God. Lighting the Advent Wreath First Sunday of Advent The candle of Peace For everyone, shall live in peace and be unafraid. Today we light the first advent candle, the candle of peace. Peace is like the flame of this candle: it flickers. Sometimes it lights the darkness; sometimes it is snuffed out, and we must attempt to light it again. (Light candle). Peace is more than the absence of war, it is the sense of well-being in all people. God loves us enough to send us the Prince of Peace. UNISON PRAYER Let us pray together: O God, as we enter into this season of Advent, may we exemplify your peace in this world. Help us to walk in your light. Amen. *HYMN No. see insert PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON) DOTTIE YODER Compassionate one, we open our hearts to you. We confess our sins. We acknowledge the places where we have strayed from your peace, where we have started little wars on the home turf and where we have disrupted the harmony of the larger community. We acknowledge the times we have held our own opinion so rigidly that we could not see another s perspective; the times we were so overcome with anger that we lashed out with words or gestures, and the times we knew the vulnerable spots in another life and took advantage of that knowledge for our own benefit. All the times, so deeply regretted, when we have broken relationship by intention or carelessness, trusting in your forgiveness, we begin again to learn the ways of peace. ASSURANCE OF PARDON DOTTIE YODER Peacemaking God, you gather us into your great embrace. You love us into being peaceful people. With new courage, we receive the gifts of peace and love to continue the journey. SONG OF PRAISE AND GLORY - Hymn No. 184 verse 7 O come, desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind: Bid thou our sad divisions cease, and be thyself our King of Peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Romans 13: 11-14 GAVIN STREB
ANTHEM Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee MARK WILBERG Jesu, the very thought is sweet; in that dear Name all heart-joys meet; But O than honey sweeter far the glimpses of his Presence are. No word is sung more sweet than this; no name is heard more full of bliss; No thought brings sweeter comfort nigh, than Jesus, Son of God most high. Jesu, the hope of souls forlorn! How good to them for sin that mourn! To them that seek thee, O how kind! But what art thou to them that find? Jesu, thou sweetness, pure and blest, life s fountain, Light of souls distress d; Surpassing all that heart requires, exceeding all that soul desires. No tongue of mortal can express, no letters write its blessedness; Alone who hath thee in his heart knows, love of Jesus, what thou art.
