FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018 Old Palms Wanted In many ways, Catholics schools have change much since I attended St. Stephen s School in Kearny, NJ. When I was in eighth grade, there were 3 classes each with more than 25 students. This was true of all the grades in our school because being Catholic meant you went to a Catholic School. At that time, there were two other Catholic Schools in the same town. I fear those days are over. Many Catholic schools, like St. Mary s, closed years ago. When St. Mary s School closed, it joined with St. John s in Bergenfield and The Church of the Ascension in New Milford to form the co-sponsored school, Transfiguration Academy. In recent years, the Archdiocese of Newark abandoned the cosponsorship model and now almost all catholic grammar schools in the Archdiocese are under the direct authority of Archdiocesan School s Office. While this may mean that St. Mary s has no longer has an official role in Transfiguration Academy, we still work to support it in many ways and we strongly encourage parishioners to consider it when making decisions about the education of their children. This is because some things about Catholic schools have not changed, most importantly, the quality of the education provided by Catholic Schools. It is an education that is balanced with strong moral development and an emphasis on spiritual growth. Today, we kick-off Catholic Schools Week. It is a chance to celebrate the many ways in which Catholic schools contribute to our Church and our community. Again, I encourage all those with school-aged children to consider Transfiguration Academy and encourage everyone to support the values of a Catholic education. Fr. ST. MARY S DUMONT

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018 Catholic Schools Week Begins Today! Last week, we focused on the statistics, the hard data, why Catholic schools are a good investment for the Church and her families. This week, we re providing the soft data, the actual words of our students, why you should encourage the families you know to consider a Catholic education for their children. Here are excerpts from a speech given by a student: Transfiguration Academy sets us on the road to success. It has been instrumental in our development, transforming us into children of God and the leaders of tomorrow. I would not miss a day of school for anything else in the world! I am currently studying in the eighth grade. As I progress into high school, I will miss all my wonderful friends and teachers. At Transfiguration, we are a family, brothers and sisters in Christ. We receive a good education and are always being challenged to try our best. We also have lots of fun and are enthusiastic to learn more. Despite my complaints of too much homework and having to get up so early, without Transfiguration, I would never have gotten to where I stand today. We are taught by the best teachers and in a variety of subjects from science to the humanities. Students are offered several extracurricular activities including Band, Drama Club, Dance Team, and many more. As this is a Christian institution, we are also given the opportunity to study the word of God and grow in faith. Transfiguration Academy molds our character and teaches us the basic life principles. In addition to academics, we learn to interact with each other and make friends. I have met students from all around the world. We learn about their culture and to respect its traditions and values. Here is a link to a two minute video prepared in conjunction with our students: https://youtu.be/i2bf37ybpbs Our Catholic Schools Week schedule of events is available on our website: www.transfigurationacademy.org. Registration for the 2017/2018 Academic Year has begun: Parents wishing to provide their children with a quality Catholic education and those looking for alternatives to public school are encouraged to consider Transfiguration Academy. To learn more about our academic, athletic, and fine arts curriculum for grades PreK2 though 8 or to schedule a tour of our Academy, please email principal@transfigurationacademy.org or call the school office at 201-384-3627. Transfiguration Academy: Strengthening faith, Enlightening minds, and Transforming hearts one student at a time.
