Advent Season Yearn for Christ s coming into your everyday life. The eternal life of heaven is utterly different from our life here and now. Nonetheless, Christ plants in our hearts a great longing for this eternal life with him. Advent is a season for us to grow in our desire for Christ to come and lead us to this eternal life. Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. Our Advent calendar above can help you fully enter in to the season with daily activity and prayer suggestions to prepare you spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ. First Friday Adoration On the First Friday of December we will have a day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The church will be open between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm and everyone will be able to come for longer or shorter period of time to spend with Eucharistic Jesus. We will begin with Mass at 8:30 am, then the blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration and prayer. At the end of the day there will be also Mass at 7:00 pm. There is a sign up sheet at the back of the church so that at least 2 people sign for each hour to make sure there is always someone present in the church with Blessed Sacrament exposed. But we invite everyone to come during a day to spend some time with our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer chain It is always comforting knowing that someone is praying for you or aloved one during a difficult time in life. Our parish is starting a prayer chain. If you or someone you know needs prayers for a specific struggle in life, we would love to pray for you or with you. You can contact the parish office at 780-939-4412 or Christine at 780-939-5563 or 780-217-6804. If you are interested in joining the prayer team or would like more infor, please contact Christine. (It s not our worthiness that matters, but God s grace and our willingness to answer his call). The Advent Penance Service To give us all an opportunity to prepare for Christmas spiritually, there will be an occasion to celebrate a Sacrament of Reconciliation in our parish. It will be held on Thursday, December 12 th at 7 pm at the church.

November 21, 2013 Dear Parishioners of St Paul Diocese, As we come to the end of the Year of Faith, I would like to thank you for your prayers in faith and especially your prayers for vocations during this year Also, I want to share with you a vivid and remaining impression that I (and many others) received while on the Marian Pilgrimage to Guadalupe, Mexico. For me it was a very spiritual experience in that we started and ended the pilgrimage at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe and on each occasion we were able to have Mass facing the famous "tilma" that bears the image of the little "Mother" who spoke to St Juan Diego. Those Masses were pretty special however, equally impressive was the faith and spirituality of the Mexican people in and around the sanctuary. But what was really remarkable to all of us was the number of young couples (of the boy-friend, girl-friend type) who hand-in-hand were coming and going around the sanctuary. Like, here were all these dating teenagers and young adults going to pray to the Virgin Mary at Guadalupe! Quite a different 'mind-set' from what we have North of the Rio Grande! We just do not see such an expression of faith and popular culture together here in our public spaces. I mean, how many young couples do you know who go to church together for a date? And so praying about and pondering on this experience leads me to realize that while we must pray for vocations, what we really need to pray about is our families; not that we somehow become Mexicans. but, rather that we be able to joyfully celebrate and transmit (hand on) the faith to our children and youth.

This past week, the priests of the diocese and I have met and discussed and we all agree that the FAMILY really must be our pastoral priority. You have perhaps also heard that Pope Francis has called for an extraordinary Synod next year on the family. And in his first Encyclical letter he wrote: " In Abraham's journey towards the future city, the Letter to the Hebrews mentions the blessing that was passed on from fathers to sons (Heb 11:20). The first setting in which faith enlightens the human city is the family. I think first and foremost of the stable union of man and woman in marriage. This union is born of their love, as a sign and presence of God's own love, and of the acknowledgment and acceptance of the goodness of sexual differentiation, whereby spouses can become one flesh (Gen 2:24) and are enabled to give birth to new life, a manifestation of the Creator's goodness, wisdom and loving plan." #52 Your priests and myself, as bishop, are going to present to you in the New Year some concrete pastoral practices to support and strengthen in faith our families. I advise you of this so that already as we move into Advent and the Christmas seasons (when we celebrate the beginnings of Jesus' family) we may all pray particularly for all our families. To help you in this, each pastor shall receive next week suggestions for Advent prayer and devotion in families. Please pray for me as I pray for you all. And may our Lady of Guadalupe watch over and protect all our families! Bishop Paul Terrio Bishop of St Paul in Alberta DIOCÈSE de ST-PAUL / DIOCESE of ST. Advent Family Prayer The following ceremonies are meant for every day during the weeks of Advent, beginning with the first Sunday. Dinner and bedtime are made even more special with this ritual. The family says the prayer as the candles on the Advent wreath are lighted. The First Week of Advent The family prays: Father in heaven, our hearts desire the warmth of your love, and our minds are searching for the light of your Word. Increase our longing for Christ our Savior and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of his coming may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. The Second Week of Advent The family prays: Father in heaven, the day draws near when the glory of your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May the lure of greed not impede us from the joy which moves the hearts of those who seek him. May the darkness not blind us to the vision of wisdom which fills the minds of those who find him. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. The Third Week of Advent The family prays: Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever faithful to your promises and ever close to your Church: the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior s coming and looks forward with longing to his return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which his presence will bestow, for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen. The Fourth Week of Advent The family prays: Father, all-powerful God, your eternal Word took flesh on our earth when the Virgin Mary placed her life at the service of your plan. Lift our minds in watchful hope to hear the voice which announces his glory, and open our minds to receive the Spirit who prepares us for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
