Joshua A little bit about me and how we are going to go about this study; teaching, homework, small groups. The whole purpose of studying the Word together! Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy and Joshua ladies, the history of the beginning of the world through the choosing of God s people as Jacob wrestled with the Lord, the history of how God saved His newly chosen people by Joseph in Egypt and finally the history of how God brought His people out of the iron furnace and into the promised land. There are so many juicy places to anchor, such incredible parallels to our lives, it is a beautiful history, rich with lessons for you and me. That is where we start off, God has brought His people out of slavery in Egypt, He has brought them through the desert with Moses as their leader, and where we pick up, Moses has been gathered to his people and God has appointed Joshua to bring the people in to possess what the Lord has promised them repeatedly. The book of Joshua is a beautiful history as well as a picture of the life of the believer. It is a history of deliverance and possession. The Israelites were delivered from bondage and slavery to Egypt, you and I were delivered from sin and death by the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Joshua bringing Israel into the Promised Land is a type or a picture of Jesus bringing us out of death and into life. 1

The Israelites were led into the promised land, we are led into an abundant, Spirit-filled life. How much of that abundant life we walk in ultimately depends on us, will we take the fullness of what God is offering us or will we skirt the edges of what our God has for us. We see over and over again, battle and victory, battle and victory, yet another picture of our walk with God. Just like Tommy spoke about on Sunday, we have the tools of warfare, but do we trust God to win the battle or are we drowning in fear? Joshua 1:6 6 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. This book is about God. As I studied the life of Joshua to give you a character study, I found that there is only so far we can go. Joshua himself would tell you that our lives are for God, about God and without Him we have nothing and are nothing. We have to start with his name, he was given the name Hoshea or Oshea when he was born and Hoshea means salvation, but in Numbers 13:16 we see that Moses changed his name to Joshua, right before he went to spy out the land. Hoshea means salvation, Joshua means Jehovah is Salvation. Joshua was born into slavery in Egypt; he would have been around 40 years old at the time of the Exodus. 2

That means he would have seen 40 years of backbreaking work, trial and hardship and he saw the most beautiful thing of all, he saw the always awe inspiring fulfillment of prophesy. Genesis 50:24 25 24 And Joseph said to his brethren, I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here. Exodus 3:16 17 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; 17 and I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey. Joshua was a first hand witness to the Lord doing signs and wonders through Moses and Aaron as God prepared to bring them out from under the bondage of slavery. Oh how his faith must have grown as he watched each time Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, each time God brought about another sign & wonder ending with the Passover, the night that by the blood of the lamb, the 3

firstborn of all his people were saved and they were sent out of Egypt. Think about the thinks you have heard and seen, how does that affect YOUR faith? EVERY BIT of the prophecy was fulfilled, this is so juicy ladies, look at the end of the prophecy of Israel s departure from Egypt in Exodus 3:21. Exodus 3:20 22 20 So I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. 22 But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians. Now look at the account of their departure from Egypt: Exodus 12:35 36 35 Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. 36 And the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians. 4

Joshua watched God fulfill every bit of the prophecy down to the plundering of the Egyptians as they were led out of Egypt! We see in Numbers 11:28 and Exodus 24:13 that Joshua had been Moses assistant from his youth. He had to have been an extraordinary youth to be the assistant of Moses, an extraordinary man. He was protective of Moses, not jealous and self-promoting. In we see that he was filled with the spirit of wisdom in Deut. 34:9 and again in Numbers 27:18 we see that he was filled with the Spirit, capital S. Who are you discipling with your life? We are always mentoring people, whether or not we know it, are you and I leading people towards the sufficiency of Christ? In Numbers 11:28 he is described as Moses assistant, one of his choice men It was Joshua who led the troops to battle the Amalekites. It was the first battle the Israelites fought after being led out of Egypt When Moses sent the men to spy out the land it was Joshua and Caleb that came back with confidence that God would do exactly what He has promised to do, but the people almost stoned them to death because of their fear. Joshua and Caleb s confidence in God made them the only two men excepted from the punishment God levied on the Israelites and they were allowed to enter the Promised Land. 5

When God commanded Moses to appoint Joshua as the leader of Israel, God gave Joshua some of Moses authority. Joshua was chosen and appointed by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. What has God appointed us to? We have all been created with a purpose, whether we are taking care of our families or in a workplace, it doesn t have to be in front of 20,000 people, if we are called to affect one, then let s do it with all our might, every part of the body is needed, from the people who greet to the people who clean the bathroom to the person who preaches. Without each other the body doesn t function properly! Numbers 27:18 19 18 And the LORD said to Moses: Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; 19 set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and inaugurate him in their sight. Joshua did not hesitate to obey God; no matter how much faith it took. He was unafraid of the giants and fortified cities in the Promised Land, he knew the character of his God, that He would do what He promised to do. When they were called to cross the Jordan, the Lord told them to step into the Jordan during flood stage before He parted the waters, marching around the walls of Jericho and blowing the trumpet. Maybe even harder than all of those acts of faith, Joshua led the Israelites, a bunch of humans. Humans like you and me. 6

All those years of watching the Lord do what He said He would do, first in Egypt, then in the desert, all the fulfilled prophecy, witnessing the relationship between Moses and the Lord, all these things did one thing for Joshua, they gave him a solid confidence in the Lord, they gave him faith. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Joshua, though he was just shy of perfect was still a man, and we see a couple of moments where he makes mistakes, but Joshua believed that the Lord could + would. You and I don t have to be perfect to be used by God, but we do have to be willing, submitted and we have to believe God. Now you and I have seen God do miracles, we have seen Him fulfill prophesy ladies, we are living our lives on this side of the cross, we have seen the formation of the State of Israel and I believe we are seeing the beginning of the end, can we say that we too believe God the way that Joshua did? Have we let our faith grow as we see miracles, signs and wonders? Beautiful women of God, I am so excited to study the book of Joshua with you, I believe God for all He is going to do through this time and I am excited for what He has in store for CalvarySB in our own walks and in our community! 7
