PRELUDE & WELCOME (*) Please stand if able. *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: We gather in the name that is our hope and our future. We gather in the name of our baptism, which means we gather in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sins with confidence in God s promise of forgiveness. P: God, wonderful counselor, C: we confess that we have turned from your gifts and chosen our own way. We have not made room for you in our hearts or in our world. We have lived in fear; we have not welcomed the stranger; we desire gifts that will not endure. Forgive us our sins, known and unknown, and open us to receive the peace of Jesus dwelling in and among us. Amen. P: God s lovingkindness has appeared to us in Christ our Savior. We are saved, not by anything we have done, but by God s mercy poured out on us richly. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Through the Spirit living in you, God give you faith to trust Jesus, who is Love born for you, now and always. C: Amen. *GATHERING HYMN Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Hymn #276 *GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

*HYMN OF PRAISE

*PRAYER OF THE DAY (The Prayer of the Day begins the transition toward the reading and the interpretation of the Bible, often telegraphing some of the issues and concerns to be raised by the readings.) P: Let us pray. P: Shine into our hearts the light of your wisdom, O God, and open our minds to the knowledge of your word, that in all things we may think and act according to your good will and may live continually in the light of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns C: Amen. with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READIING 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26 18Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, May the Lord repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the Lord ; and then they would return to their home. 26Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with the people. R: The word of the Lord, C: Thanks be to God! PSALM (SATURDAY) Psalm 148 WA: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise God in the heights. C: Praise the Lord, all you angels; sing praise, all you hosts of heaven. WA: Praise the Lord, sun and moon; sing praise, all you shining stars. C: Praise the Lord, heaven of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. WA: Let them praise the name of the Lord, who commanded, and they were created, C: who made them stand fast forever and ever, giving them a law that shall not pass away. WA: Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps; C: fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing God s will; WA: mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; C: wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds;

WA: sovereigns of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; C: young men and maidens, old and young together. WA: Let them praise the name of the Lord, whose name only is exalted, whose splendor is over earth and heaven. C: The Lord has raised up strength for the people and praise for all faithful servants, the children of Israel, a people who are near the Lord. Hallelujah! CHORAL ANTHEM (SUNDAY) Cover Him, Joseph Cover him, Joseph, the evening is cold. Night mists have fallen, the day has grown old; tired the people who toss in their sleep, weary the shepherds still watching their sheep, Tender the mother, gracious and mild, God in his mercy, God in his mercy has given this child. Cover him, Joseph, he s still a wee boy, hope binds us daily to heavenly joy; far in the future some dark days may loom, strengthen his life for the moments of gloom, gentle the mother, gracious and fair, God in his mercy, God in his mercy will answer her prayer. Cover him, Joseph, oh, cover him, Joseph, cover him.

SECOND READING Colossians 3:12-17 12As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. R: The word of the Lord, CHILDREN S SERMON (SUNDAY) *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION C: Thanks be to God!

*GOSPEL READING Luke 2:41-52 P: The holy gospel according to Luke, C: Glory to you, O Lord! 41Now every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. 42And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 43When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 44Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. 49He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? 50But they did not understand what he said to them. 51Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. C: Praise to you, O Christ! P: The gospel of the Lord, SERMON *HYMN OF THE DAY: That Boy-Child of Mary Hymn #293

*NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WA: Dwelling in the presence of God with us, let us boldly pray for the church, the world, and all in any need. WA: God of wisdom, open our ears to hear your grace through the words and deeds of children. Inspire the youngest and oldest in our midst to learn from one another with humility and patience. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: God of creation, praise to you for hills and mountains, fruit trees and forests, animals wild and tame, sea monsters, birds, and reptiles. Spark delight in our hearts for all that you have made. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great.

WA: God of hope, call us to peace and bind us together in perfect unity. Make wars to cease. Guide the leaders of the nations in your way of wisdom, compassion, and tolerance. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: God of healing, mend the broken hearts of those who suffer this day. Treasure everyone who struggles with addiction, loneliness, hunger, unemployment, mental illness, or sickness (especially). Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: God of life, draw us into the body of Christ and make us grow in faith and hope. Fill us with hearts of thanksgiving made visible in our words and actions for the sake of the whole world. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: God of delight, fill us with songs of praise and hope even in the midst of despair and death. Comfort the grieving (especially). Strengthen our faith until the day we will be gathered around your throne singing in eternal praise. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Trusting in the presence of God by the power of the Holy Spirit, we commend all for whom we pray, dwelling in the light and hope of Christ, our Savior. C: Amen. *SHARING OF THE PEACE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OFFERING *OFFERTORY SONG Refrain: Verse 1: Verse 2: Verse 3: Go Tell It on the Mountain Hymn #290 Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev ry where; go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born! While shepherds kept their watching o er silent flocks by night, behold, through-out the heavens there shone a holy light. Refrain. The shepherds feared and trembled when, lo, above the earth rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior s birth. Refrain. Down in a lonely manger the humble Christ was born; and God sent us salvation the blessed Christmas morn. Refrain.

*OFFERTORY PRAYER WA: Let us pray. Holy God, C: your beauty shines forth from the manger and your love flows from the cross. As you gather us around these signs of your love come among us, warm us to extend your care among the hungry and all in need. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (We prepare for Christ to enter our very bodies with the words The Lord be with you, just as the angel Gabriel once used these same words to announce Jesus conception in the virgin Mary s womb, e.g. Luke 1:26-28.)

*PREFACE

*HOLY, HOLY, HOLY *EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming.

C: Come, Lord Jesus. P: Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. C: Come, Holy Spirit. P: All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. *LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the table where Christ meets you. Eat, rejoice, and be glad!
