Confession and Forgiveness (please stand) P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who shines in glory, clothes us in compassion, and bears gifts of mercy for all. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sins with confidence in God s promise of forgiveness. C: God, wonderful counselor, we confess that we have turned from your gifts and chosen our own way. We have not made room for you in our hearts or in our world. We have lived in fear; we have not welcomed the stranger; we desire gifts that will not endure. Forgive us our sins, known and unknown, and open us to receive the peace of Jesus dwelling in and among us. Amen. (silence is kept for reflection) P: God s lovingkindness has appeared to us in Christ our Savior. We are saved, not by anything we have done, but by God s mercy poured out on us richly. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Through the Spirit living in you, God give you faith to trust Jesus, who is Love born for you, now and always. C: Thanks Be to God! 1

Prayer of the Day L: Let us pray L: Shine into our hearts the light of your wisdom, O God, and open our minds to the knowledge of your word, that in all things we may think and act according to your good will and may live continually in the light of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (please be seated) Children s Sermon- THE WORD First Reading Hebrews 2:14-18 14 Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters [a] in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God 4

Gospel Acclamation R: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 2nd Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. 5

Gospel Luke 2:22-40 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; [ a] this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. [ b] 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon [ c] came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon [ d] took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 Master, now you are dismissing your servant [ e] in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. 33 And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon [ f] blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. 36 There was also a prophet, Anna [ g] the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child [ h] to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. R: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated) 6

Sermon (Silence for reflection, then please stand for the hymn) Pastor Jonathan Hymn of the Day Once in Royal David s City 7

Introduction Rite of Holy Baptism P: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Presentation Sponsors: We present Benjamin John Belew for Holy Baptism. P: Jessica (& Allan), called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Benjamin baptized into Christ? Parents: We do. P: As you bring Benjamin to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God s faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help John grow in the Christian faith and life? Parents: We do 8

P: Sponsors, in Christian love you have presented Benjamin for baptism. Do You promise to care for him in every way as God gives you opportunity, that he may bear witness to the faith we profess, and that, living in the covenant of his baptism and in communion with the church, he may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ? Sponsors: We do P: People of God, do you promise to support Benjamin and pray for him in his new life in Christ? C: We do. Renunciation of Evil P: I ask you to reject sin, profess your faith in Christ, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Parents and Sponsors: We renounce them. Profession of Faith P: With the whole church, let us confess our faith. Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 9

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Baptism P: Benjamin John Belew, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the +Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Benjamin you belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized! Alleluia! Laying on of Hands P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, wash them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Benjamin with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. C: Amen. Signing With the Cross P: Benjamin, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. C: Amen. 10

Presentation of a Candle L: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16) Welcome P: Through baptism you have been received into the household of God, entrusted with the good news of Jesus Christ, and strengthened to serve by the holy and life-giving Spirit. Let us welcome Benjamin! C: We welcome you into the body of Christ and the mission we share. Join us as we give praise to God and bear God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. 11

Prayers of the Church P: Lord in your mercy, C: Hear our prayer. Sharing of the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.
