Gospel Luke 2:22-40 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; [ a] this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. Introduction Rite of Holy Baptism P: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Presentation Sponsors: We present Benjamin John Belew for Holy Baptism. P: Jessica (& Allan), called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Benjamin baptized into Christ? Parents: We do. P: As you bring Benjamin to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God s faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. We commune by Intinction. As you are ushered forward, please kneel at the altar rails, extend your hand to receive the bread (or ask for a gluten free wafer), and dip it into either the red wine or white grape juice. You are also invited to remain at the altar rail for a brief time of prayer and meditation if you wish. Adults who do not receive the supper or children who have not received First Communion instruction are encouraged to come forward for a blessing. 14
