THE BURIAL SERVICE AS WE GATHER As the Church conducts the new Christian into its fellowship through Holy Baptism and sustains his faith through the preaching of the Word and the Sacrament of the Altar, so at death the voice of the church is again heard. In the order of the Funeral Service the Church proclaims its greatest hope in the resurrection of the dead through our Lord Jesus Christ. PRESERVICE MUSIC On Eagles Wings INVOCATION HYMN Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound LW 509 GREETING Leader: Praised be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all mercies, and the God of all consolation! He comforts us in all our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those who are in trouble with the same consolation we have received from Him. People: Blessed be God! Leader: Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with Him in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. People: Thanks be to God! Amen. Leader: On the day of his baptism July 25, 1931, Howard put on Christ. In the day of Christ s coming, he will be clothed with glory. People: Amen. PSALM 23 2

Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. When Peace, like a River When peace, like a river, attendeth my way; When sorrows, like sea billows, roll Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate And hath shed His own blood for my soul. He lives oh, the bliss of this glorious thought; My sin, not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! And, Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall descend; Even so it is well with my soul.
