The Formation of Religious. A Mustard Seed #606 There are two major differences between a diocesan (a/k/a, secular or one who does not pronounce vows) and a religious priest: A) A diocesan priest promises celibacy and obedience to his bishop, and generally serves within the territory of the diocese into which he is incardinated. B) A religious priest professes vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to his provincial or general superior, and serves within the territory served by his community which may encompass a number of states or particular region of a country. For example, the Conventual Franciscan Friars staff parishes in the Springfield Diocese with the approval of the bishop, but they are appointed by their Minister Provincial. A man who studies for the diocesan priesthood is expected to be a college graduate, followed by four years of graduate theology in seminary. In religious life, whether one is called to priesthood, brotherhood, or sisterhood, a different formation process takes place. Becoming a member of a particular order is what comes first. The following is a general description of the religious formation process. Contact is made with a particular community, which may or may not include a time of aspirancy (enabling the aspirant to learn more about the life of the order while living apart). When a person is accepted by an order, he/she will spend time as a postulant, living in community but without making vows or wearing the habit of the institute. Postulancy may last from six months to one or two years. When the time has come, the postulant is admitted into the novitiate, which lasts from one to two years, depending on the order. The new novice is invested with the habit, although a variation of the complete habit of a professed member. A novice sister is generally given a white veil. A male novice (e.g., a Franciscan) may wear the tunic without cowl or capuche, or the cord may lack the three knots signifying the three vows. For the male candidate, if he has not already done so, he usually decides (with the assistance of his formators) as a postulant or a novice whether he has been called to live his religious life as either a brother or a priest. Again, using the example of the Conventual Franciscan Friars, candidates for the professed brotherhood are addressed as Brother while candidates aspiring to priesthood are addressed as Friar. After the period of novitiate is complete, and the novice is approved by the competent authority, he/she professes the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for a temporary period of time. This temporary profession lasts from between three to eight years, depending on the congregation. Within that time there are opportunities to renew one s temporary vows. While in temporary profession, some members attend college in preparation for their future service in the order, e.g., educators, priests. Priest candidates, like their diocesan counterparts, attend seminary. When the brother, sister, or friar is ready, and again with the approval of his/her formation directors and superiors, he/she is then admitted to perpetual profession. This means the temporarily professed member will profess to live the evangelical vows, with the grace of God, in the institute for the rest of his/her life. Page 9
