Rain has a job to do. It comes from the heavens and waters the earth. The earth then brings forth seed for crops and enables the baking of bread and the preparation of essential foods. Water returns to the sky, the prophet Isaiah says, but only after it has done its job. We cannot live without the word of God. It has a job to do as well. It comes from the heavens to bring its fruitfulness to the earth. It announces God s love, provides direction for the wayward, and gives hope to those who despair. God s word returns to heaven, but not before it has done its job. Sometimes we squander these gifts. Household plants may be inches away from water, but they will not grow unless we give them a drink. We may be inches away from God s word. It comes to us in the Scriptures, in the order of nature, in the counsel of friends, and in the community of believers. But we cannot grow unless we lift the cup and take a drink. Where does God s word speak around you? What occasions do you have to listen? God s word has a job to do. Put it to work. Fr. John Sanctuary Lamp Week of July 16 July 22 In Memory of Hazel and Paul Tessier (Rem.) By daughter

Yet doubt is a wound that each of us shares. It is not necessarily a fatal wound, nor is it a flat-out rejection of our faith. I can picture myself that evening having a similar doubt. Maybe you can as well. We certainly have experienced doubt in our efforts to explain the faith to others. Sometimes we are rejected. More often, we have to unveil the beauty of our faith over time and with utmost patience. God did not abandon Thomas in his doubt, nor does he abandon us. Our God, after all, is full of compassion and patience. Doubt is a wound we all share. It is a wound that God longs to heal with his divine mercy. Will Rogers once said: There is nothing as easy as denouncing. It don't take much to see that something is wrong, but it takes some eyesight to see what will put it right again. We come to each day with a choice of whether to be FOR something or AGAINST it. Shall we put energy into what we seek and admire or shall we give our energy to opposition and resistance of what we dislike? If someone asks a favor, we have a choice to resent and resist the intrusion or to engage with the person and see where it might lead. If a project we are working on is frustrating, we can wallow in criticizing it or try to get a clearer picture of what will work and what we want. Criticizing may be a helpful first stage in learning, but it is seductive because it holds little risk and we feel safe doing it. In that comfort we forget to go forward to create what we really want. Our negative energy, when we are seduced by it, creates negative results. When we look back upon today, we will admire those choices that risked creating something positive. Today, I will not give my energy to denouncing but to creating what I believe is worthwhile.
