For more t han twenty years, The CARE Clinic has been there to help men and women w hen no one else would help them. Many t imes we fil l a temporary gap in health insurance. Other times we are able to help hard-working parents, whose dollars are stretched beyond their ability to pay, receive basic medical attention when they are sick. Two years ago, or as Ben would tell you, "in another lifetime... ; he had a picture postcard life. Beautiful wife and two healthy, happy children, as well as a good job running the construction services side of a local housing materials company. He and his wife, Nora, had purchased a small home, their nrst, just two years earlier and it was a tremendous source of pride for both of them. Ben's life was good... until one day it suddenly wasn't. Seemiogly~ou t of_tbeblue, Now, bis-wifeof almost twentjt yeacs,_was diagn.osedwjtfw.varian. caacer. BefoJE that day, she was the picture of good health. Less than six months later, she was gone, and he was suddenly a single father. His employer, who did "the best they could; was unable to hold his position open as the rigors of caring for an ailing wife and children became his full time job. Health insurance, which had already strained their budget, was out of reach when COBRA was his only option. When the hospital bills started to pour in, Ben knew his unemploymen t was not close to being enough to cover their expenses, and so he sold the house that he had promised Nora they would "live in forever" because for them, forever was no more. In spite of all the challenges that fate seemed to be throwing his way, Ben was committed to maintaining a positive attitude and moving forward, since there was no going back. Just a glance at his once smiling face, now furrowed and worn as he sat in the waiting room here at The CARE Clinic, made it visibly clear (as if facts were not enough) that the last two years had been incredibly difficult for him and his family. 239 Robeson Street PO Box 53438 Fayetteville, NC 28305 910.485.0555 Fax 910.485.0111 Email care@thecareclinic.org www.thecareclinic.org

One thing is certain... none of the more than 2,000 patient visits The CARE Clinic provided in the last year could have ever happened without the ongoing, committed and caring generosity of friends like you, Friends, who have chosen to stand with those in our community who want nothing more than to be well. On that day, Ben came to us because he was feeling terrible and genuinely frightened. For the last two weeks, he was finding it increasingly difficult to sleep at night, and as soon as he began his day, he would suffer from increasingly painful headaches. That morning, things had gotten much worse... he could not catch his breath and right after he put the children on the school bus, he had the worst nosebleed of his lifetime. Ben was a strong, proud ma n... but as soon as his volunteer provider saw him in the examining room, the tears started to ru n down his cheeks. As he told her, he w as afraid he had a brain tumor. He asked, almost pleadingly, "What would happen to my children if something happened to me? "Within minutes, Ben and the volunteer medical professionals working to help him, had their answer: Ben had high blood pressure t hat was very treatable and would likely respond favorably to medication, a bit more exercise, and a little less sa lt in his diet. Once again, tears ran down this proud man's cheeks, but these were tears of relief. Thanks to our compassionate community, The CARE Clinic is able to offer medica l, dental, prescription, chiropractic and educational services to working poor families facing unexplained, and often frightening, medical issues. More often than not, we are there to care for local area residents when no one else will help them, often filling a temporary need for healthcare services. Were it not for Th e CA RE Clinic, the primary breadwinner in many local, vulnerable families would be unable to work, putting their abi lity to provide for their loved ones at-risk. At The CARE Clinic, we have an unwavering commitment to provide quality healthcare and limitless compassion for those who simply cannot get it elsewhere. As the only such provider in the area, thanks to you and with your continued support, we are able to provide a beacon of hope for those with no place else to turn. Through the support of donors like you, Friends, The CARE Clinic is rebuilding lives and restoring hope for hundreds each year. Our ability to meet the needs of tomorrow requires that I respectfully ask for your generous support today. Your gift of 250 or more w ill help us advance The CARE Clinic's mission of providing free, quality hea lth care to eligible uninsured, low-income adults who live in Cu mberland County. I saw Ben at The CARE Clinic when he came in for his one-month check up, and besides looking like a different person, he told me that he felt that we had given him a second chance at life. And, as t he smile told me before he could, Ben had also fou nd a new job that he loved. On behalf of all those whose lives are made better because of your generosity, like Ben, I thank you in advance for your friendship and for your generous commitment to The CARE Clinic mission. Of one thing you can be certain... we cannot do it without you. With sincere appreciation, ~00 Cathy Ory Executive Director
