Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31, 2016 Dear Friends, We celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Gospel story is about apparent greed, or maybe just plain selfishness. It s a double-whammy parable about stewardship and a rightful understanding of possessions. The first part of the parable tells us that a young man approaches the Lord and asks him to arbitrate for him about his inheritance. The Mosaic Law stated that the firstborn son was to receive twice as much as any other heir (Deuteronomy 21:17). So, it would seem that the younger wanted more of his inheritance, plus, inheritance practices in the first century Israel tell that if one asked for his inheritance, basically he wished his father were dead! So, a rather challenging and difficult response was needed from Jesus. And Jesus response is the second part of the Gospel about the rich man who built larger barns to hold his stuff so that he could rest, eat, drink, be merry for many years. Treasure, Jesus says, is not about the stuff we accumulate, or the stuff we rely on for our comfort, but rather, a true placement of all that we have in God. Stewardship and the treasure we have are not ours, but God s blessing to us, on us, and for us to return in blessing for others. What we have graciously received we must generously return. I know that s a difficult lesson given the state of our world and economy and the needs we have and want, but in Christ and in Christ Jesus alone are we to place ALL OUR NEEDS AND WANTS. THANK YOU for your attention in the ask, seek and knock request last weekend for our Capital Roof Project. A copy of my request is in the Bulletin this weekend and a letter with an envelope will be received by all our registered households this week to BEGIN the $25 a month for 36 months request from all our registered parishioners, faith families and households. There are many faith families who are currently NOT registered, so to you I graciously invite you to please support the Capital Roof Project with your generosity. And to all our VISI- TORS to St. Mary s we graciously WELCOME you as one with us and ASK you to pray for our efforts and IF you are so apt, to help with our Capital Roof Project. Envelopes are in the pews for your donation. So many thanks for your generosity in the Sunday collection! Blessings on ALL, as we move forward with our Capital Roof Project. Father John

It is not always easy. Sometimes I find it hard to smile at my Sisters, but then we must pray. Prayer begins at home and a family that prays together, stays together. We must give Jesus a home in our homes for only then can we give Him to others. Excerpted from: Life in the Spirit, 73. Bible Study Bible Study meets in the chapel on each Tuesday at 11:00am and again at 7:00pm. This week the Book of Judges continues to reveal the story of God s loving care for those who are faithful to Him. No prior knowledge of scripture is needed as we open these stories together. Just bring your Bible and a listening heart to see if God does not have something to say to you. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel on Tuesday at 12:30pm. This week our quiet prayer will be followed by a CD from Fr. Thomas Keating. Why not make use of this opportunity to experience contemplative prayer in a group setting? All are welcome to join us. Come and see if this type of prayer might benefit you on your spiritual journey? 12 Step Spirituality On Thursday of this week 12 Step Spirituality will finish their discussion of Step Four and move into Step Five. Join us in the chapel from 2:30pm until 4:00pm to see how the use of scripture can enrich your practice of Steps Three and Eleven. Family Perspectives In today s gospel Jesus tells us: One s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. When we spend too much time working to obtain more stuff we don t have time for the people in our lives. What is enough? Are the words of Jesus, You fool, meant for us? Pope Francis warns us to resist a throw-away culture which values things over people and relationships. Make time and space for the people you love. Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker. Admission is only $5.00. Our next speakers on Wednesday August 10th, will be Mark and Christi Tripodi, founders of Cornerstone of Hope, a ministry that helps people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, who will be speaking to us about the mystery of suffering and their own personal experience with loss in their talk entitled Pain to Purpose: Tragedy to Triumph. Theology on Tap is a great way for young adults to go deeper in their faith and connect with other young Catholics in the area. For more information, please contact Fr. Tim Roth (440) 333.2133 / frtim@samparish.org Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes DISCORD TO HARMONY By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy Today, you will hear the cantor sing out, Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. If you turn on the evening news, the world doesn t seem all that kindly. Wars, political scandals, mass shootings, hostage situations, the list goes on and on. With all of these terrible things that tear into our hearts, I turn to a quote from Gandhi that I use as a life mantra: Be the change that you wish to see in the world. When we look to God for guidance, for a heart that can be kind instead of cruel, we can be that tipping point that brings joy and peace into society. St. Francis of Assisi also says, Sanctify yourself and you will sanctify society. Let us heal ourselves with God s gift of grace and create a joyful soul so that we can embrace a world that mirrors its maker. Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.
