Luke 3:3-6 John the Baptist
a voice calling in the desert
Luke 3:3-6 Reconciliation Isaiah 40:3-5 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
Luke 3:3-6 Reconciliation Isaiah 40:3-5 Originally a prophesy of the exiles returning from Babylon God creating a smooth path for them to return. 2 Samuel 14:14 Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.
I will bring you back Deuteronomy 30:4 Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you and bring you back. Isaiah 54:7 "For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.
I will bring you back Jeremiah 29:14 I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile." Ezekiel 37:12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
I will bring you back God s Plan to reconcile or bring us back? 1. Christ (had no sin) becomes SIN for us 2. We become a NEW CREATION in Christ 3. We are now Ambassadors for Christ. Or Ministers of reconciliation 4. We are now the voice calling in the desert, calling people out of captivity, out of darkness, out of exile BACK TO GOD!
Luke 3:7-20 Repentance Repent: μετάνοια metanoeo, met-an-oeh'-o; to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (moral feel compunction) :- repent. REPENTANCE IS INWARD heart level, feeling level, thinking level
Luke 3:7-20 Repentance Produce: ποιέω, poieō, poy-eh'-o; a primary verb; to make or do, bear, bring forth (action) PRODUCE FRUIT IS OUTWARD can be seen, observable result of inward change
Matthew 7:16-20 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree (INWARD) bears good fruit (OUTWARD), but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Luke 3:7-20 Repentance The man with two tunics share with him who has none (sin of omission) The one who has food share Tax collectors Don't rip people off (honesty/integrity at work) Soldiers Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely, be content with your pay (lying, greed)
The ax is already at the root of the trees Romans 11:13-21 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in. Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
Brood of Vipers! John s Message: flee from the coming wrath! the ax is at the root of the trees! cut down and thrown into the fire! burn up the chaff with an unquenchable fire! Luke 3:18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.
Luke 3:18 Good News Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Good news don t have to carry it, to live with it Change It doesn t have to be like this, there s hope, there is reconciliation, there s GOD! Refreshing it s getting so much better, I didn t know it could be this good, I didn t think I could change
Luke 3:18 Good News Psalm 32:3-5 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Luke 3:23-38 Genealogy of Jesus Luke 3:38 He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli the son of Adam, the son of God Matthew 1:1-17 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob
Luke 3:3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 3:21-22 Why was Jesus baptized? 1. Obedience Philip. 2:7 [Jesus] made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 2. Example Ephesians 2:20 with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 3. Fulfillment Matthew 3:15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.
Luke 3:21-22 Jesus is baptized Prophecies fulfilled: Psalm 2:7 He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Isaiah 42:1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. John 1:33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
Luke 3:21-22 Jesus is baptized 4. Anointing Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners Acts 10:37-38 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
