Welcome to Bethesda-by-the-Sea! A large-print version of this service leaflet is available from one of our ushers. If you are a visitor, have a prayer request, or would like more information about Bethesda-by-the-Sea, please fill out the card found on the back of the pew in front of you and place it in the offering plate. Those entering or leaving the service are asked to do so only during the congregational hymns, as indicated in the service leaflet. Holy Eucharist, Homily and Stripping of the Altar at 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of The Triduum. The Triduum refers to the period beginning with sundown on Maundy Thursday and extending until sundown on Easter. It corresponds to the ancient celebration of the Pascha, with two days of fasting and one of celebration. From a theological and liturgical perspective, The Triduum restores a measure of the unitive nature of the Paschal celebration. Notice that there is no dismissal in either the Maundy Thursday or the Good Friday liturgy. In one sense it is a single liturgical act from Maundy Thursday through the Great Vigil of Easter. This is the period in which we pass over with Christ from death to life. We die, and live, and reign with Christ. The congregation stands as the Procession enters. Procession Latecomers may be seated at this time. Hymn 495 Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus In Babilone The Word of God Lenten Acclamation Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgives our sins. People His mercy endures for ever. Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Healey Willan 2

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. The congregation is seated. Lesson Exodus 12:1 14 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 116:1, 10 17 Thomas Pavlechko The congregation, remaining seated, joins in singing the following antiphon before the Psalm and as indicated below. 3

antiphon I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. How shall I repay the Lord for all the good things he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. antiphon Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his servants. O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the Lord s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. antiphon Epistle 1 Corinthians 11:23 26 I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Gospel Procession The congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. Hymn 329 Now, My Tongue, the Mystery Telling Pange lingua Stanzas 1 4 Gospel John 13:1 17, 31b 35 Before the Gospel Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered, You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no share with me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head! Jesus said to him, One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. For he knew who was to betray him; 4

for this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, Where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. After the Gospel Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is seated. Homily The Rev. Burl Salmon A brief period of silence follows the Homily. The congregation then stands at the lead of the Celebrant. Prayers of the People From Intercessions for the Christian People Gathering all that commands our prayers, let us intercede with our gracious God, saying: We beg for mercy, O God. For the church, that the fasting of these forty days may clear away much that is needless and so open our eyes to the bright glory of the cross, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. For our divided and restless world, that those who hold power over others may be troubled and transformed by the demands of justice, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. For the will to give all your people access to your grace, and for the will to supply food and sustenance to the world s people, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. For all whom we avoid, for those we consider ungodly, for the outcasts, the beggars, the downtrodden, for our enemies, and for an end to our hardness of heart, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. For all who yearn for health, for the handicapped, for those in mental anguish or spiritual turmoil, for the incurably ill, for all the sick and suffering, and for all who remember and care for them, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. For hearts to do what is good and right and true, and for humility before Christ, that we may never murmur against you, O holy God, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. Other intercessions We praise you, God of our hope, for all the faithful before us who entered into your labors and worshiped you in truth. That we may live faithful to eternal life, we pray: We beg for mercy, O God. 5

Concluding Collect Pour your love into our hearts, O God of peace. Give us joy in our suffering, endurance in trials, character in times of weakness, and hope in adversity. Transfigure us by the gift of faith for our life s journey, until we behold face to face your glorious beauty, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession of Sin and Absolution The Deacon says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Celebrant and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The congregation stands. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. See page 10 for more information. Offertory Anthem Kyrie (from Requiem) Maurice Duruflé Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. At the Presentation Celebrant O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power; People Because you have created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer I from Enriching Our Worship) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. 6

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. For our sins he was lifted high upon the cross, that he might draw the whole world to himself; and, by his suffering and death, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who put their trust in him. Sanctus and Benedictus Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing: Missa Marialis The congregation kneels, and the Celebrant continues. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. 7

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. Celebrant As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Celebrant and People (2nd translation of the Lord s Prayer, from The Book of Common Prayer) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Fraction Anthem Agnus Dei Missa Marialis 8

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward to the High Altar at the direction of the ushers, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, please request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are only available at the High Altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. During the Communion Hymn 325 Let Us Break Bread Together on Our Knees Let Us Break Bread Anthem Ubi Caritas (sung in Latin) Stephen Caracciolo Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God, and from a sincere heart let us love one another. Where there is charity and love, God is there. May we also see, along with the blessed, the glory of your face, O Christ, and let there be immeasurable joy both now and for evermore. Amen. Ashley Leland, soprano The congregation stands when the Celebrant returns to the altar. Postcommunion Prayer From Enriching Our Worship God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Prayer over the People Deacon Bow down before the Lord. The congregation bows. Celebrant From The Book of Occasional Services Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Hymn 171 Go to Dark Gethsemane Petra 9

Stripping of the Altar In Christian tradition, the Altar is not only the focus and center of our worship but the Holy Table from which we draw our spiritual food and drink. Thus, the Altar is the symbol of Christ himself, the one perfect Offering and Sacrifice to God. All year we appropriately vest or clothe this symbol of Christ with frontals but on this night we strip it, in preparation for seeing it tomorrow bared, as was Christ on the Cross. As the Clergy and the Ministers of the Altar enact this ceremony, the choir offers: Ave verum (sung in Latin) William Byrd Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, Who has truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mortals, Whose side was pierced, whence flowed water and blood: be for us a foretaste of heaven during our final examining. O Jesu sweet, O Jesu pure, O Jesu, Son of Mary, have mercy upon me. Amen. Procession of the Reserved Sacrament The Clergy reserve the sacrament in the Chapel. Then, as the Clergy, Choir, and Lay Ministers process out of the church, the congregation is invited to join the Procession maintaining silence as we all leave the church together. Easter Holy Eucharist & Luncheon for the Homebound Thursday, March 31, at 12:05 p.m. Some seniors and handicapped persons cannot attend an Easter service. It may be too crowded or too hard to park. We refer to these as homebound even if they are not always homebound. If you or someone you know fits this description, please be our guest at this special Easter service. We will need help with all aspects of the event from registration and helping guests as they arrive into the church, as well as assisting them to the Parish Hall afterwards, serving the meal, and cleanup. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Ayana in the church office at 655-4554 or e-mail her at ayana@bbts.org.
