Keeping in touch with Iowa s Churches of Christ L ghthouse of Iowa July 2012 And the truth shall make you free. John 8:32 (NIV) Looking back, I m not sure just how it happened, although I suppose I was a little embarrassed that I was taking the remainder of my steak dinner to my homebound mother. Dining at the neighborhood steak house, I had found myself stuffed after the salad bar, so when the steak and baked potato arrived, with a little loaf of that delicious homemade bread, I asked for a togo carton. Honey, you haven t eaten hardly anything, an elderly man dining alone hollered my way. An entire section of diners glanced at me. Mom and I both got a laugh out of that steak dinner she didn t get, and my dog Spanky was one happy pup. And I had learned a lesson I needed to learn: Always tell the truth. It will set you free in more ways than you can imagine. Dear Lord, thank You for Your gentle reminder of the way I should live. ROBERTA MESSNER The head-erect and shoulderssquare, Clean-minded fellow, just and fair, That all men picture when they see The glorious banner of the free. I d like to be the sort of man the flag now typifies, The kind of man we really want the flag to symbolize: The loyal brother to a trust, The big, unselfish soul and just, The friend of every man oppressed, The strong support of all that s best The sturdy chap the banner s meant, Where er it flies, to represent. Oh, I thought I d take this steak home to my dog, I answered quickly, almost apologizing, then chagrined that I had lied. The next thing I knew, the man hobbled over to my table and dumped the scraps off his plate onto the pristine steak dinner in my foil carton. More for the pooch, he explained with a grin. A Patriotic Wish I d like to be the sort of man the flag could boast about; I d like to be the sort of man it cannot live without; I d like to be the type of man That really is American: I d like to be the sort of man the flag s supposed to mean, The man that all in fancy see, wherever it is seen; The chap that s ready for a fight Whenever there s a wrong to right, The friend in every time of need, The doer of the daring deed, The clean and generous handed man That is real American. Edgar A. Guest
