The Emmaus News Columbus Indiana Area Emmaus Community, Inc. December 2018 volume 26 issue 12 A Note from the Community Lay Director This is a month of celebration for Christians. We celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But it is also a time we celebrate and honor God who has blessed this Emmaus Community with four successful Emmaus Walks and Chrysalis Flights in 2018. As your Community Lay Director, it gives me great pleasure in welcoming all new Community Members from Walks #107, 108, 109 and 110. We also welcome all the new Butterfly s from Flights 67, 68, 69 and 70. We give special thanks to all the Lay Directors, Spiritual Leaders and Team Members who served on these Walks and Flights. A thanks of gratitude go out to the Sponsors who felt the call to sponsor a Pilgrim or Caterpillar. But, most of all, we give the Glory to God who provided everything we needed to provide these individuals with the opportunity for renewing their faith on this 72-hour journey. For 25 years, the Columbus Emmaus purpose has been to equip God's people to be positive in their faith by personally sharing the presence of Christ in our lives, to encourage them to recognize Christ's presence in their lives, and to share that presence with passion and truth by being leaders in their churches, families and communities. And now, as we look forward to celebrating Christmas with family and friends, remember the greatest gift you ve ever been given wasn t bought in a store. No cash exchanged hands. It wasn t even wrapped. Yet it cost the Giver everything. May you and your family have a Blessed and Merry Christmas! DeColores, Phil Newton, Community Lay Director

Rev. Bob Woods reminded us at our fantastic 25th Anniversary celebration that Emmaus is all about discipleship. The weekend equips us to be better disciples, which then positively impacts our marriages, families, Churches, and communities. So what positive impact has the last 25 years had on those who have attended an Emmaus Walk in the Columbus area? Without knowing all of the specifics, we can certainly point to: Christians who have been stretched into uncomfortable opportunities, Some attenders have been awakened to God s call into ordained ministry, Churches have grown stronger with more servant leaders within them, Many attenders are involved in reunion groups, finding in them fellowship, accountability and encouragement to serve, Many attenders are volunteering even more in their communities, Some attenders have heard God s call to be involved in the Residents Encounter Christ jail ministry, and some attenders have felt led to participate in mission trips, even to other countries. The Emmaus movement in the Columbus area has truly been enlarging God s Kingdom! May the next 25 years see continued growth in our impact on the world. Pastor Mike Seaney, Community Spiritual Director 25th Celebration Nov. 17, 2018

A Note from our Fall Lay Directors Dave Goodner, Lay Director, Walk #109 Men s Walk #109 is in the books now and has touched the hearts of the pilgrims and the team. God put together a team united for His service and dedicated to spiritual victories. Right out of the gate, it was evident at New Found Friends, that many had shared interests and concerns. Watching the tables in the conference room, it was a joy to see everyone participating and sharing one another s burdens. The spiritual director and assistants set a great example sharing their own burdens. The ALD s and Board Rep kept us all on task. Dying Moments was one of the most special times I have ever witnessed and been a part. There was a lot of work accomplished and the devil was defeated. Satan is still trying to wedge back into some of the lives, but the men are persevering with God s help. It was clear as the week-end progressed, that all of us were united for the common good and God was given all the glory at the closing testimonies as each pilgrim shared what the walk had meant to him. I owe so much thanks to God for allowing me the privilege to do this and for the blessings I received by saying yes to the call. Further I am extremely grateful to everyone who played any role from the beginning of planning to the conclusion and wrap-up. Special thanks to those behind the scenes who pray, serve, and drive vehicles. God bless. Dave Goodner, Lay Director, Walk 109 Debbie Schill, Lay Director, Walk #110 Women s Walk #110 was October 25-28 and what a blessing it was to so many. God pulled together a team of 47 committed servants and 33 eager pilgrims. From team selection, to team training and through the walk weekend, everyone united with a heart of service. Our introductions during new found friends revealed interesting facts and so many things in common, followed by the realization of table assignments and how God placed people together.. why are we ever surprised about this? Maybe because we doubt our own ability to hear Him guide in details, but He does!! Our music was beautiful and our food was great. The agape gals were like little angels, everywhere at once! Our tables were lead with much prayer and interceding by leaders. Our spiritual team helped us over the hurdles that hinder so many in understanding all the facets of grace. ALD s and board rep worked tirelessly for weeks ahead to make sure all the details fell right into place. During the weekend, we were able to watch pilgrims (and team) grow in their relationship with Jesus, and that s what it s all about. As they say, each day will get better. Friday will be better than Thursday, and Saturday will be better yet. By Sunday you may not want to go home. We ve all heard this many times. But this time, as we ran through Sunday toward closing, I kept hearing it over and over in my mind and heart. And closing sealed it, as all but 3 pilgrims shared deep and heart felt stories of what the weekend meant to them and what they are going to do about it. Based on that, A LOT is going to happen for the Kingdom! But in the end, as we shared in Holy Communion and sang our final song together with the community, How Great is our God it sounded like a heavenly choir and I know God was pleased with the weekend. Thank you to all who served or prayed or helped in any way. May you be as blessed as I was in serving.

Emmaus Board News!!! As the New Year approaches, we say goodbye and hello to friends as the Board changes faces! Agape It's not too early to be putting on those thinking caps and planning to make agape for the upcoming walks! There are lots of great ideas on Pinterest and 101 Agape Ideas online to inspire you. 90 pieces for each walk provides enough agape for pilgrims and team. Many of the banners that are hung in the conference room throughout the weekend are beginning to show wear and tear and it is time to retire them. Which means we need new banners to replace them. If this sounds like something you would be interested in helping with please contact Debbie Frey, Linda Leszcynski or Cheryl Motosicky. Also if you are interested in helping sew agape bags contact Debbie Frey and she will get you all set up with materials to make them. A note from the Chrysalis Lay Director Believe it or not, until 1900, the amount of available information or "knowledge" doubled approximately every 100 years. By the 60's, it was doubling every 25 years. By 2000, knowledge was estimated to double every 1.5 years. Today, thanks to the internet, knowledge doubles every 12 hours. This is astonishing and it has an affect on everyone. More than ever before, teens in 2018 are facing more challenges and more temptations. There is so much information thrown at them every day. Unfortunately, the culture shift has led so many away from their faith. Being a teenager is hard anyway, add to it all of the overwhelming things that society says they should be doing and it's nearly impossible to survive. What if you could do one small thing to help a teen navigate their crazy life and point them toward Christ? Would you do it? Remember your Emmaus experience? Wouldn't you have loved to have received that boost in your faith much earlier in life? You can give that gift and make an investment in a young person in your life to help encourage their faith. I urge everyone to think of just one teen (a child, grandchild, niece/nephew, neighbor, friend) who could benefit from a Chrysalis flight. Once you think of that person, start asking them and encouraging them now to attend the flights in March. It's never too early to fill out those applications and get them turned in. Maybe you simply can't afford to be that sponsor - it's okay, there are scholarships available. Maybe you don't know them that well - take the next 3 months to get to know them. There are a thousand "maybes" and we can provide a solution for all of them! Don't let that teen that you thought of miss out on the Chrysalis experience and the boost in their faith! Applications are available on the Emmaus website. Say a prayer and hand it to that teen you thought of. You won't regret it! Fly With Christ! Leah Griffin Chrysalis Community Lay Director
