Easter in Poland This year Easter is on the 1 st of April. We celebrate the Holy Week earlier. Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday. This special Sunday is a commemoration of Jesus entry into Jerusalem. On this day we make palms (a decorated stick) and we take it to church. A few days later we celebrate Maundy Thursday. On that day Jesus had his Last Supper. After this we celebrate Good Friday. There is a strict fast (we do not eat big meals and meat) - we do it to commemorate Jesus death on the cross. On Holy Saturday Jesus lays in the grave. We colour eggs and prepare our baskets for church. In our Easter baskets we must have: eggs symbol of life lamb symbol of Jesus bread symbol of Jesus body horseradish symbol of Jesus suffering salt symbol of truth and simplicity pisanki colored eggs The next day, on Easter Sunday, we eat food from the basket and lots of different food and we are very happy. We greet each other with the words Alleluia, the Lord is resurrected. The next day we celebrate śmigus dyngus. On that day we pour water on others. It s a kind of fun tradition J. Easter is the most important day for Christians. We like this day soooooo much J! 3
Easter in UK and the USA Easter in the UK and the USA is pretty similar. The name of this holiday Easter according to the most widely accepted theory of the origin of the term is that it came from the name of an old English goddess called Eostre. Since its origins, Easter has been a time of celebration and feasting and many traditional Easter games and customs developed, such as: egg rolling, egg tapping, pace egging, cascarones or confetti eggs, and egg decorating. Today Easter is commercially important, seeing wide sales of greeting cards and confectionery such as chocolate Easter eggs as well as other Easter foods. Even many non-christians celebrate these aspects of the holiday. Traditions Throughout the Englishspeaking world, many Easter traditions are similar with only minor differences. For example, Saturday is traditionally spent decorating Easter eggs and hunting for them with children on Sunday morning, by which time they have been mysteriously hidden all over the house and garden. Other traditions involve parents telling their children that eggs and other treats such as chocolate eggs or rabbits, and marshmallow chicks (Peeps), have been delivered by the Easter Bunny in an Easter basket, which children find waiting for them when they wake up. Many families observe the religious aspects of Easter by attending Sunday Mass or services in the morning and then participating in a feast or a party in the afternoon. Food Some families have a traditional Sunday roast, often of either roast lamb or ham. Easter breads such as Simnel cake (a fruit cake with eleven marzipan balls representing the eleven faithful apostles) or nut breads such as potica are traditionally served. Hot cross buns, spiced buns with a cross on top, are traditionally associated with Good Friday, but today are often eaten well before and after (and, indeed, are sold in many supermarkets and bakers' all year round). In Scotland, the north of England, and Northern Ireland, the traditions of rolling decorated eggs down steep hills and pace egging are still adhered to. The Queen While the Easter weekend is usually spent privately with her family, The Queen distributes Maundy Money each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday. The Queen travels to a different cathedral across the country to hand out special coins to men and women in recognition for their contribution to their community and church. The ceremony has taken place in England since the year 600 AD but taking the tradition nationwide was her idea at the start of her reign. Author: Julia Knap 4
