Men's Ministry Newsletter First Baptist Church of Salinas October 2011 Upcoming Events There will be an Iron Sharpens Iron conference held at Rancho Cordova, east of Sacramento, on Saturday, October 22 nd, and all men are invited. If you would like to attend, please call Doug Block. We should be able to car-pool to the conference to save some travel expense. We promise that we will not allow Doug to make the hotel reservations this time! http://mensministrycatalyst.org/isi/isi_sac.asp

Are there any hungry men out there? A Streets of Bethlehem breakfast, for men and women, hosted by FBC Ironmen, will take place on Saturday, November 19 th, starting at 8AM. Then stay and help us unload the Street s trailers as we get ready for our Christmas ministry to the community. Our special guest speaker during breakfast will be Dr. Gary Gallegos, Director of Victory Mission, who portrays Jesus in Streets of Bethlehem. Come enjoy breakfast, hear from Jesus and help us unload the trailers. This year Streets will take place December 7-10 so be sure to sign up as a volunteer to make this a lasting experience for the community. http://www.streetsofbethlehem.com/ BREAK OUT YOUR FISHING GEAR AND GET READY TO LAND SOME TROUT! The men will be going a Fishing Retreat at Hume Lake next spring. Mark you calendar NOW for April 27-28-29. This is after the dreaded income tax deadline and before Mother s Day so we all should be good to go! Go to this link to see some videos of fishing and more details about the fishing retreats available at Hume Lake. Specific details about our retreat will be provided as we get closer to those dates. http://www.humelake.org/adult/men/fishermens-retreat/ Stay up to date on Ironmen events at www.ironmen.fbcsalinas.com or follow us on facebook.

The Men s Ministry has been busy this summer: In August the Iron Men small groups met for a BBQ dinner at Toro Park where each group leader shared what they were currently studying. Oh, did I mention that the tri-tip, and the chicken and the ribs, cooked by master chef, Derrel Simpson, was out of this world? There were 22 in attendance, much more than those that had responded to the invitation, and there was not a morsel of food left over! Amazing how God provides the fishes and loaves for those who serve him. In September we attended Cherries Jubilee after a great buffet dinner at El Toritos on Cannery Row in Monterey. After dinner we walked up and down Cannery Row admiring all the classic cars lined up along the streets and in every parking lot. What can be better..men.food. and old cars. On October 4 th all the men and their families were invited to see the movie Courageous in downtown Salinas. What no food? Now, would we have an event for men without food? Those who could make it, met at Casa Sorrento for pizza with the entire family at 4:30 PM and then went to watch the movie at 6:30 PM at the Maya Cinema. Around 80 people from FBC (and invited guest) attended this event.

After the movie, for the next several days, as small groups met, members talked about the impact the movie made. It was a great reminder that men have to provide the leadership in the family, not just financially, but also spiritually. In August, Doug Block and Jim Tripp attended a Men s Ministry Workshop, put on by Men s Ministry Catalyst, which was held at a church in Rancho Cordova, east of Sacramento, and the group discussed ideas of how to make men s ministry work in churches of all different sizes. What works for a mega church is not possible with a smaller church. We are considered a medium size church and we came away with some ideas of how to improve our men s ministry. This newsletter is one such idea. http://mensministrycatalyst.org/ Here is some other information of general interest: There is a story in The Blaze newsletter about the church in Georgia on HOW THE CHURCH BEHIND COURAGEOUS IS MAKING HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS & IMPACTING A GENERATION You can go to this link to read the story and, if interested, sign up for the Blaze newsletter to be sent to your email periodically. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/how-the-church-behind-courageous-ismaking-hollywood-blockbusters-impacting-a-generation/ You can also sign up to receive a weekly devotional from Men s Ministry Catalyst if you would like: http://mensministrycatalyst.org/index.asp Finally, we would appreciate feedback about what you think about this newsletter and its content and about what additional content you would like to see included in the future. Please forward your comments to Doug Block at dougs.construction@gmail.com
