May 18 2014 Sister Margaret Joseph Gilligan, SC Early in the morning of May 13 th, the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, Sister Margaret Joseph Gilligan of the Sisters of Charity-Halifax, died at Wellesley, Mass at Mt. St. Vincent. Sister Margaret Joseph was a remarkable and unforgettable lady and a magnificent religious. For years she lived here at St. Aidan s and also served as principal of our wonderful school. She absolutely loved St. Aidan s and was fond of reminding me (when I was at another parish) There is no parish like St. Aidan s. At the time, I didn t realize how right she was! In addition to her work at other schools, she served as the Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. I had heard her name, but never met her until I was assigned to the Church of St. John the Evangelist. On a rainy afternoon I met her and the other nuns in the convent it was like something out of The Bells of St. Mary s. Quickly I learned all about the school and the parish and I could see that she was very ready to help me as I began as Administrator of the parish. She was a great mentor and gave me some very sage advice. She was kind, enormously intelligent and had very definite views. As you might imagine, I had some very definite views also. We were not afraid to voice our opinions with each other and together formed a good team. I cannot begin to tell you how helpful she was to me and from her I learned an awful lot about what it means to be the Pastor with a parish school. I admired her for her extraordinary faith, devotion and kindness and her superb ability to manage a school. She knew how to handle every problem and difficulty from the financial to the human relations part of the picture. She loved the children, but taught them a sense of personal responsibility. One of the things I recall with a smile was the rule if you forgot your lunch, your mother couldn t run up with it. The kids had to take responsibility. They never starved! She always had a secret stash in her office. Nevertheless, they didn t forget their lunch again. I learned from Sister that we need to teach our children to be responsible even at an early age. (Parenthetically that is a great lesson that is always valuable along with the cardinal rule of always doing your homework and doing it neatly.) Sister Margaret Joseph celebrated her Golden Jubilee here. It was a tremendous celebration and one that I will never forget. The music was majestic and glorious. What I remember most of all, however, is Sister Margaret Joseph speaking very briefly at the

conclusion. She was absolutely radiant and glowed with a happiness that was unforgettable. She told us how wonderful life was as a Sister of Charity-Halifax. The only time I think she had a bigger smile was when she met Jesus last Tuesday. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Jesus says, I come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Good stewards are grateful for the gifts of life and joyfully share their abundance with others. STEWARDSHIP 05/12/13 $28,582 05/11/14 $24,881 (-13%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! This weekend s second collection is for Communications. EASTER LILIES The memoralized Easter Lilies are ready to be picked up. Please see the Sacristan either before or after each mass before Tuesday, May 20th.

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Preserving Religious Liberty for all! Pope Francis has observed that religion cannot be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life insisting that our liberties as Americans be respected. The United States Conference of Catholic of Bishops (USCCB) has called again this year for a Fortnight for Freedom beginning June 21 st ending on July 4 th. What is the Fortnight for Freedom? It is a call to 14 days of pray, action and study for religious freedom in the US as our freedoms are under attack. The following are examples of attacks on religious freedom: FEMA denied disaster relief to Churches devastated by Sandy. The Affordable Care Act, through the HHS Mandate calls for the Catholic Church to provide insurance for that which is against its moral and ethical beliefs and teachings. 5yr. old, Gabriella Perez, a Seminole Country, FL student, was told it was wrong to bow her head in prayer before she ate lunch by school officials. How can you respond? We are called to educate ourselves, stay informed, be in contact with our elected officials, participate in the activities of the Fortnight for Freedom and above all PRAY, PRAY, PRAY! Fortnight for Freedom Activities include: Opening Mass at St. Agnes Cathedral Holy Hour at St. Aidan on June 24 th at 7:30 pm in the Church Fr. Phillip Eichner will be speaking at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington June 25th 2 nd Annual Rally for Religious Freedom on June 28 th at St. John the Baptist s High School Check the web-site of Catholics for Freedom of Religion at www.ctholicsforfreedomof Religious.org. St. Aidan CFFR will meet May 19 th at 7:30pm in Kirwin Hall. All are welcome! We have become certain of two things: religious freedom is under attack, and we will not cease our struggle to protect it. Cardinal Timothy Dolan EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION NIGHT OF PRAYER On Tuesday, May 20th, at 7:30 PM in the church there will be a Night of Prayer. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA We are still celebrating the Joy of Christ s resurrection. Throughout our world, the world of believers Easter is a glorious celebration of life- the life of our Risen Savior. St. John Paul II used to tell us: We are an Easter people. The Easter season would last until next month, June 8 th, the feast of Pentecost. Indeed, May is a glorious month, we, here at our dear St. Aidan s Parish, embraces all the Marian devotions. We see the children, first participating in the Holy Eucharist, and partaken of the real presence of Jesus in their innocent hearts, give us assurance that God is near, loving us, especially today, in a world often confused and conflicted, and that our beautiful Church is not simply a building but a temple that inspires, renews, and sends us forth! For all of you who have young families, every day of the year gives you a special opportunity to instill a great religious appreciation in your children, to broaden their knowledge of Our Lord, the Blessed Mother and the saints, and to strengthen their dedication to God and the Church. Each day is set aside by the Church to honor a particular event of our Faith, or to honor a particular saint. You can discuss these events with your children, stressing the qualities in the saints lives which they might cultivate. During May, encourage your children to show special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Praying the Rosary is one way of doing so; keeping fresh flowers before her image in your home, is other; teach your children the benefits from a loving devotion to Our Mother. In our kiosks you would find many CDs for children with inspiring stories are sure to delight younger listeners, and help their parents to teach the Faith. The Mass Comes Alive # 1 and 2. Children will be inspirited as the Mass comes alive in this CD. And others. As we have many CDs about the Virgin Mary you would grow closer to Mary and Jesus. All these CDs would help you to learn more about our Faith, and as you give them away, you would change many hearts and souls of those who are not close to Our Lord. You would help change lives! Toti Conforti SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF MAY The month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Lady. During this month, both in church and in our homes pray the Rosary. Mary and the Holy Rosary can change lives. Begin to pray a family rosary once a week. If five decades are too difficult, try starting with one. Honor Mary with flowers, set up a house altar in a special place, a table with a Marian picture decorated with flowers, around which the family can pray together. Encourage your children to show special devotion to the Blessed Mother. The month of May we also remember our natural mother. If your mother is with you, show her your love in the best possible way. Give thanks to Our Lord for her presence in your life. If she is with God, pray for her, pray to her, and remember her love for you. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) 746-6585 x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.
