Happy New Year! Where did 017 go? Are you asking yourself that question? It was a wonderful year at Lisbon UMC. We were generous in helping others in 017. We collected over $1000 in loose change to give to the Lisbon Schools to support families in need, and donated undies to nurse Julie s school supplies. Under the leadership of our confirmation youth we sent money to the victims of hurricanes and vitamins to African children. Our congregation supported the United Methodist Women s mission projects. Our high-school youth provided a meal each month to the Mission of Hope shelter in Cedar Rapids, adding a second meal for a second shelter. Our faith in Jesus Christ brings hope to people outside the walls of our church. That must make God very happy, it sure makes this pastor proud to be a part of this community. We have also been good stewards of what we have here in our church. Much attention was given in 017 to the beautiful building we call our church home. The outside of the church was repaired and painted as was the inside of our beautiful sanctuary. Our church leadership gave careful attention to these projects. But even more important, we paid close attention to the souls of the people God has called together as our congregation. Many people have taken part in our all church small groups during Advent and Lent. Many of you have opened your homes for groups to meet. You have gotten to know others in our church better and you have grown in your faith. We have welcomed new members, celebrated baptisms together and a new group of confirmations students will be celebrated in May! You opened your church and your hearts once again to the children in the community through Vacation Bible School this summer. In the past months we have worked our way through two books of the Bible through a congregational challenge. We have read Luke and Proverbs. As your pastor, I have a new challenge for you, let s read the Gospel of John together in January. What a great way to start a New Year. There are 1 chapters in the New Testament book of John. I suggest you read a chapter each day. John is a unique look at Jesus life, different from the other gospels. John focuses on Jesus deity (the divine nature of Jesus) and Jesus s miracles, or as John calls them signs. Will you start your New Year with this goal? I will be preaching on a teaching from John each Sunday in January, hope you will join us! There is another opportunity to grow in your faith as the New Year begins. I will be teaching a Bible Study each Sunday afternoon in January from 4:0-6:00pm. It is called Your Life in Christ. Let us know in the church office if you would like to attend, I want to make sure I have a book for you! So, as you begin another year in the Lord, focus on this verse. Many would say this is the key verse in the gospel of John; Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 0:0-1
WOMEN S GROUPS SCS January 16th is the date 7:00 is the time for our next meeting; Chris Wiskus will be our leader this month with Denise providing dessert. And Melissa as Co Hostess Join us as we continue our study in Ecclesiastic. Young Women bible study for women between the ages of 4 will be held at 7:00 pm on the nd Wednesday of every month. If you would like more information or have any questions please contact Daphne at 81/8-610 WIC Women in Christ met on Friday, December 14 at Bev Achey's home with ten members and two guests present. Ruth Grisham was able to be with us with her daughter, Sally, and daughter-in-law, Chris. We had a wonderful sit-down meal together around Bev's beautiful table that Carl made for their family. We had a very short business meeting where we discussed our options for programs in the 018 year. We decided to use a book entitled "Twelve More Women in the BIble", which explores the stories of some of the lesser known women who would be good examples for all of us to follow. Ava Stamp will order the CD and Study guides for the series on behelf of the whole group, and then we will each repay her. We voted to have a Valentine cookie sale on February 11, which is also the day when we will be delivering orders for the "Soup to Go" fundraiser. There will be more information later about the choices available, the sizes and the prices. Preorders will be required. The business meeting was adjourned and we went into "party mode" for the next couple of hours. Unfortunately, the same thing occurred this year as last year! Some proved that envy, jealousy, and thievery are still alive and well even in the hearts of Christians. It was a LOT of fun!!! ----- Nancy Forbes
