ST COLUMBA S CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Principal's Message : Term 2 - Week 3 Welcome back to Week 3 and the number of things that your child/ren will be involved in this term. We congratulate those children who have been selected for Saints Netball Rep Teams : AvanLee Petero - 8A, Rieley Chou-Lee, Brooke Rouse - 8B, Miller Chou-Lee & Tesrne Blank - 7B. All the very best to you all as you commence into your winter sport codes. This term's inquiry concept of "Proud to be Catholic" has been generating a wonderful buzz and great discussion across the school. The teachers enjoyed a walk-through of all the classes last week to view each other's inquiry walls and share the learning so far. They have planned lots of rich activities at each of the year levels to help the students explore our Te Kura O Hato Karama identity as Catholics, e.g. trips to the Cathedral and Hui Te Rangiora Marae (our Catholic Marae), exploring the Mass and icons in the church, studying Saints of the past and inspiring Catholics in the present, and interviews with parishioners, Father Alfonso and Sister Lydia. We're also very excited that Bishop Steve is paying us a visit tomorrow, to be interviewed by Team 1 and 4 students. It will all come together in week 9 during Catholic Character week when each team will share and celebrate what they've learned. Thank you all for your contributions to our school and the wonderful positive support you provide in our community. God bless Gareth Duncan Principal

THE FEAST OF PENTECOST This Sunday 20th May The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The colour of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Excerpt from Catholic Online SCHOOL/PARISH MASS - THIS SUNDAY THE 20TH MAY Our school Mass is this Sunday at 10.00am to celebrate one of the most important feast days of our Church year - Pentecost. Everyone is invited to wear something red, if you wish, as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Students can meet their teachers in front of the church at 9.45am. We hope you can stay after Mass for a chat and refreshments. See you there.
