BGES is Proud to Present a BGES Civil War Field University Program: Steve Wise s Ohio: Cradle of Victory May 24-28, 2017 With the election of two Kentucky natives to presidencies of the United States and the Confederate States the expansion of the United States to the west s well established and while Virginia had become the Home of Presidents (with 6 of the first 15 being from the Old Dominion) Ohio (formerly claimed as part of Virginia) s now clearly the home of the men who would save and lead the Union to victory in the Civil War. Afterrds Grant, Garfield, McKinley, Harrison and Hayes would all rise to the presidency after the r and politicians such as Stanton, Sherman and Wade would play key roles in the renel of the Union. When you add in army commanders who were Buckeyes, Ohio s the undisputed Cradle of Victory. Join us on a sweeping tour of this quintessential American state not coincidentally shaped like a shield the Shield of the Union! We will take you from the shores of Lake Erie to the banks of the Ohio River. Seldom has a tour been organized that reveals the role of Ohio and its impact on the nation s greatest conflict. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 8 PM: Assemble at our headquarters hotel to meet each other, receive your reading book and hear Steve overview the remainder of the week. Dinner is on your own Your hotel is included. Thursday, May 25, 2017 Lets start early with your bags loaded by 8 AM and an 8:15 departure. We will depart on the first leg of a relatively long but rerding day. Our first stop is the birthplace and grave of Major General James B. McPherson. Grant s protégé s the only US Army Commander killed during the Civil War (Battle of Atlanta) McPherson s a bright light who would have gone far in the US Army. Our next stop is Spiegel Grove, The home and site of the Presidential Library of Rutherford. B. Hayes. Take a good look around the house, library and museum before we head down to the very impressive Ohio Civil War Museum at Tiffin. It doesn t open until noon so we will have lunch first. We will then discuss and drive past the Equestrian Monument to William Rosecrans in Sunbury and then Camp Chase in Columbus before pushing on to have dinner at the Golden Lamb, a tavern, inn and restaurant since 1803 and the site of the death of Clement Vallandigham noted Democrat anti-r activist. We will overnight there. Lunch, dinner and hotel included. Friday, May 26, 2017

Lets be on the road by 8:15 as today will feature US Grant President and Commander of the Union Armies. We will visit his birthplace on the banks of the Ohio and see his upbringing in Georgetown. On the Ohio River we will weave the thread of the Underground Railroad, Harriett Beecher Stowe and Uncle Tom s Cabin when we visit the John Rankin House in Ripley. For many slaves escaping across the river this s their first stop in the free north. After lunch we will travel with the Thunderbolt of the South John Hunt Morgan who raided Indiana and Ohio we will pick him up from Dunkinsville through Pomeroy, Chester and Portland. We will finish the day following Albert Jenkins September 1862 sortie into Ohio. Overnight in Ripley, WV. Hotel, lunch & dinner are included. Saturday, May 27, 2017 The only combat in Ohio took place at Buffington Island where Morgan s raid turned sour, we will visit that battlefield and will then follow Morgan and the remnants along the Hocking Canal to the northeast. We will turn west and see the home and birthplace of General William T. Sherman and his brother Thomas Sherman US Senator. We are in Amish Country and perhaps we will be lucky enough to eat in one of their cafes. We will make like cavalry and ride past doing a photo op at Little Phil Sheridan s monument and boyhood home in Somerset. Another great Civil War name follows: George Armstrong Custer s monument and birthplace in New Rumley. The general s tour today ends with the Fighting McCooks of Carrollton. Fifteen family members served the Union with 6 becoming brigadier general or higher. We will end the day after seeing Morgan s fight at Salineville and the surrender at West Point. Hotel, lunch and dinner are included. Sunday, May 28, 2017 Our final day begins with a tour of McKinley s Memorial in Niles. A Medal of Honor recipient who s later assassinated as president he s an army sergeant. We will then go to another assassinated general and president s home: James A. Garfield. Many people think he won the presidency during the retreat from Chickamauga. After lunch we will visit the Ohio Veterans Home Military Museum and, if we can arrange access, the Confederate Officer s POW camp at Johnson Island. We will return to the HQ hotel and dismiss by 4:30 PM you can arrange flights home after 6 PM or stay the night at your expense. We will provide lunch.
