Lesson a 1 Christianity vs. Religion 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. 11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus. 18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 I saw none of the other apostles only James, the Lord s brother. 20 I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. 21 Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only heard the report: The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy. 24 And they praised God because of me. Man-made religion is a corruption of God s true message. Look at one or more of the research assignments below. Answer the questions and then correct the summary statement for each one by putting key words back in order. Out of Order Assignment one: Galatians 1:6, 7 Gospel means good news. The good news of God is summarized in Ephesians 2:8, 9. The false teaching to which Paul referred in Galatians is spelled out clearly in Acts 15:1, 5. Compare these two messages and explain why Paul said that this different gospel... is really no gospel [good news] at all. What are some results of this bad news message (Galatians 1:7; Acts 15:10)? Summary statement Religion places korsw before acegr. Assignment two: Galatians 1:8-12 At times religion claims the authority of an intelligent authority figure or a popular person to support it. The false teachers in Galatia probably referred to popular rabbis at the time to support them. Paraphrase Paul s response to such claims (vv. 8, 9). Compare the words of Paul (vv. 11, 12), Peter (2 Peter 1:16-21), and John (1 John 1:1-4). Summarize the words of these three great apostles. Summary statement Religion places human iinnoop before God s hrttu. Assignment three: Galatians 1:13-24 The false teachers in Galatia were responding to the number of Gentiles coming into the church. Gentiles did not have the moral laws of Moses to follow. How did Jews view Gentiles (Galatians 2:15)? What do you think these false teachers were trying to accomplish? Why might that have seemed like a good idea? Read Galatians 1:13-24 and 1 Timothy 1:12-16. Before becoming a Christian, Paul followed the law of Moses. What point was Paul trying to make about the power to make real change in a person? Summary statement Religion desires to clnoort others more than it desires to bring lasting aceghn to others. 4 Lesson 1
Galatians Today Read this letter and have Mariah prepare a response based upon Galatians 1:6-24. Dear Mariah, I know that you and Mom and Dad wonder where I have gone. I am fine and have joined a religious group called The Family. The Family teaches that we must reject our own families to follow Jesus. I have taken my college funds out of the bank and have given them and everything else I own to be shared by all the members of this new family of mine. You may not recognize the name of this group. It was first called The Children of God and was founded by a prophet named David Berg that we call Moses or Mo or Dad. His writings help clear up the mistakes that many churches have made when teaching the Bible. For example, other churches make such a big thing about sex. Mo taught that Jesus had sex with Mary and Martha and that we should enjoy this gift without attaching a lot of rules to it. Other religions are part of the system, the mess that our parents and governments have made of this world. We try to live outside of the system and its lies. In many ways we act like the hippies used to back in the 1960s. We don t fit in and don t want to! The Family does not like us to have contacts with our old families, but I had to write this letter. I can sneak away and check the post office box shown on my return address if you want to write back. Your sister, Dannae Lesson 1 5
