Vol. XIV, No. III June - August, 2005 2005 Clergy Days in Albuquerque Ordinations to the Holy Priesthood Clergy and Religious from the Eparchy of Van Nuys met in Albuquerque, NM from May 23-26, 2005 for their annual Clergy conference. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church hosted the event. Father David Petras and Sister Susan Sisko of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh along with Father John Kachuba from the Eparchy of Parma were guest presenters on the topic of the Divine Liturgy. A special celebration on Tuesday evening, May 24 honored Father Julian Gnall, 50 years a priest and Father Robert Rankin, 25 years a priest and retiring religious, Father Januarius Izzo, OFM, pastor of Holy Protection parish in Denver and Sister Celestine Petruska, OSBM, Eparchial Treasurer. We thank them for their many years of service and dedication to the Church. Bishop William Skurla ordained two men to the Holy Priesthood during May and June. Father Michael O Loughlin of Albuquerque, NM was ordained on May 25 at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Albuquerque. Clergy, family members, friends and classmates attended in celebration of his Ordination. Prior to his ordination, Father Michael studied at Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA. On Saturday, June 4, Father Randall Ackley was ordained to the Holy Presbyterate at the Pro-Cathedral of Saint Stephen in Phoenix. Concelebrants included Father Anthony Hernandez, Father Stephen Washko, Rector of the Pro-Cathedral and several visiting clergy from California, Arizona and Indiana. Father Randall is assisting at Saint Philip in Sacramento, CA. God grant many years to our newly ordained priests, anniversarians, and to those retiring from the Eparchy of Van Nuys. U.S. Catholics donated over $150 Million to the tsunami relief effort. It was one of the most successful appeals ever. BISHOP GEORGE KUZMA: 50 YEARS A PRIEST June 1, 2005, Uniontown, Pa. -- The celebration marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of Ordination of Bishop George Kuzma to the Priesthood took place on Wednesday, June 1 at Mount Saint Macrina, Uniontown, PA. The hierarchs of the four arch/eparchies of the Ruthenian Metropolia traveled to Uniontown to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the chapel of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great. Metropolitan Basil Schott and Bishops Andrew Pataki, William C. Skurla and John Kudrick along with his classmates, Father Julian Gnall and Father Robert Radvansky, joined Bishop George at the altar. Father Wesley Izer, SDB, and Father Kevin Marks, chaplain to the Sisters of St. Basil, concelebrated the Liturgy. In attendance for the celebration were Bishop George s niece, Dorothy Kozloski and her husband, Arnold, and his sister-in-law Phyllis Kozma. Following the Divine Liturgy dinner was served in the Sisters dining room. Bishop George M. Kuzma was born on July 24, 1925, the youngest child of Ambrose and Anna (Martin) Kuzma of Windber, PA. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, after which he began his studies for the priesthood. He attended St. Francis College in Loretto, PA and St. Procopius College in Lisle, IL. When Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary opened in Pittsburgh, he transferred and received his degree from Duquesne University. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Nicholas T. Elko on Pentecost Sunday, May 29, 1955. Our Hierarchs: Archbishop Basil Schott, OFM Bishop William Skurla, Bishop George Kuzma, Bishop John Kudrick and Bishop Andrew Pataki His priestly ministry included parishes in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio before his move to the West Coast. He served as pastor of Annunciation Parish in Anaheim, CA from 1972 until his elevation to the episcopacy in 1987. On February 4, 1987, he was ordained bishop in Passaic, NJ where he served as auxiliary bishop. On January 15, 1991, Bishop George was enthroned as second bishop of Van Nuys. Following the devastating Northridge Earthquake in 1994, administrative offices of the eparchy relocated to Phoenix, AZ. Upon reaching the age of 75 and in accordance with canon law, he submitted his resignation to the Holy Father. Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation on December 5, 2000. Bishop George currently resides at Mount Macrina Manor in Uniontown. Bishop George was presented with a plaque honoring his dedicated service to the Church. The festival included Reverend Robert Rankin holy services of Vespers, Divine May 7, 2005 Liturgy and Matins each day with the procession of the Icon of St. God grant you John the Baptist. SISTERS OF SAINT BASIL SELECT NEW LEADERS May your gifts burn brightly so that together we may continue to serve the Church with zeal. June 22, 2005, Uniontown, Pa. The Sisters of Saint Basil of the Province of Our Lady of Perpetual Help met in chapter sessions June 10-12, 2005, at Mount Saint Macrina, Uniontown, PA. Delegates and Sisters participated in these meetings to elect a new Provincial and four councilors to serve as the leadership of the Province for the next five years. Sister Seraphim Olsafsky was elected Provincial. Sisters Carol Petrasovich, Barbara Jean Mihalchick, Barbara Swindells, and Susan Sisko were elected as councilors. Sister Carol was elected Assistant Provincial. Leadership and administration are not new to Sister Seraphim. Within the Province, she was a member of previous councils, traveled to Rome as a delegate to Pictured, left to right: Sr. Susan Sisko, Sr. Barbara Jean Mihalchick, Sr. Seraphim Olasfsky, Provincial; Sr. Barbara Swindells, Sr. Carol Petrasovich. general chapters of the Order, and served as the directress of formation. She has been a teacher, principal, and a social worker in the adult psychiatric program at Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville, PA. Presently, she is the director of the Byzantine Seminary Press, the Archieparchial coordinator for the Protection of Children and Youth Assistance, a member of the vocation interview board, and the chairperson of the Heritage/ Museum committee. In Thanksgiving for devoted service, the former administration was honored with a gift and a special dinner in appreciation. Honored were Sister Ruth Plante, Provincial; Sister Jean Marie Cihota, Vicar Provincial; and, Councilors Sister Elaine Kisinko, Sister Valeria Evanyo, and Sister Barbara Swindells.
