MARCHING AT 50 - JOURNALISM COURSE AT BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN A student receiving the certificate from the guests - from right - Shri. G.N. Ranganatha Rao, Veteran Journalist, Shri Siddaraju, Chairman, Karnataka Media Academy, Shri. H.N. Suresh, Director, BVB With diploma course in Journalism of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan turning 50, its students, professors and alumni gathered to celebrate its Golden Jubilee at the Bhavan s auditorium. As this year marks the 50 th year of Journalism school of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, the Centre took a moment to celebrate and reminisce about its five-decadelong journey. BVB Journalism School was the first in Bangalore and second in Karnataka only after Mysore University, mentioned Shri N.S. Sridhar Murthy, Journalism course Co-ordinator, BVB. What is special about this school of journalism is that it equips students with practical knowledge which is essential to work in the field, informed well-known journalist Ranganatha Rao who has also been a part of this School and whose efforts culminated in setting up of Kannada medium wing of the school in 2000. Reading the course name in Kannada, he lamented, the equivalent word to journalism in 7
Kannada should have actually been Patrika Vyavasaya instead of Patrikodyama as the field is not meant to be a udyama (business). But unfortunately today s journalism is becoming more of a business. In the words of Shri. Siddaraju, Chairman, Karnataka Media Academy: we, as journalists and readers, are undergoing a crisis of scholarship and confidence in this era of fast and breaking-news journalism. According to him, in many newspapers the pages are being decided not by the editorial but by the department of circulation. When getting advertisements by hook or crook becomes the hidden agenda of the media, quality of news gets compromised. We should not forget that we are actually comprising on the sensibilities of the reader, added Ranganatha Rao. In the veteran s opinion, the time has come to rethink about the trajectory journalism which is guiding today s media. One way to instil ethics in the students of journalism is to begin exercises that observe and review and to widely read newspaper columns and hear popular All India Radio programmes of the 80s and 90s, he suggested. After the speeches, students of previous batch shared their experience during their college days. Director of BVB H.N. Suresh distributed the marks cards and diploma certificates to the successful students. Shri N.S. Sridhar Murthy Co-ordinator of Bhavan s Media College conducted the proceedings - Manasa Kambanna 8
