Souern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements Pension Application of John Dickey: W3962 Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris State of Nor Carolina} SS. Iredell County} On is 12 day of September 1844 personally appeared before e presiding Judge of e Supreme Court of Law and Equity for e County of Iredell Elizabe Dickey a resident of e County of Rowan in e State aforesaid aged about Seventy nine years who being first duly sworn according to law do on her oa make e following declaration in order to obtain e benefit of e provision made by e act of Congress passed July 7 1838 entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows. That she is e widow of Captain John Dickey who was a Captain in e Militia of Nor Carolina and served one or more Tours under Gen l [Griffi] Ruerford on e borders of Sou Carolina and one oer tour under Gen l. [William Lee] Davidson and was near e person of at General when he fell in e Skirmish wi e British when ey crossed e Catawba River at Cowans Ford [1 Feb 1781] and served as Captain of a Company under Col [Francis] Locke in e Battle of Ramsours Mill [20 June 1780]. That he courageously led on e attack in at battle. That when a retreat was ordered by e Commander in at battle e said Captain Dickey refused to quit his post bravely fighting Sword in hand until e line which was broken and driven back was restored and e Battle gained. at he was nearly all his time in e army from e time e British landed in e City of Charleston [spring 1780] till e close of e war. That he was in oer battles & skirmishes e name of which she can not recollect. at he had e care of several Barrels of Powder which he kept hid about his own House till about e time e British crossed e Catawba, when finding he was watched by some suspicious neighbours he procured e Removal of e powder rough e aid of some trusty friends to a place of safety. That her Husband John Dickey resided during e war and afterwards till his dea in e County & State above named [sic: Iredell County formed from Rowan in 1788]. That he always served as a Volunteer. That she has no documentary evidence as to her husband s services to support her claim. She furer declares at she was married to e said Captain John Dickey on e 18 day of November 1793 and at her Husband e aforesaid John Dickey died on e 20 day of March 1808. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving e service, but at e marriage took place previous to e first of January 1794 viz at e time above stated. She furer declares at her reason for making is declaration wi County of Iredell aforesaid is at she has been spending e summer at e Mineral springs in e aforesaid County of Iredell, and furer at she never knew until about e mon of July last past at she was entitled to a pension or had any claim to one. all of which will more fully appear on reference being had to e proof hereunto annexed. Sworn to & Subscribed before e Court as aforesaid. Elizabe herxmark Dickey State of Nor Carolina} Rowan County} on is 10 day of April 1852 personally appeared before e undersigned a Justice of e peace in and for said County John S Johnson a resident of said County aged irty five years [illegible word] maks oa at he well acquainted wi Elizabe Dickey who was e widow of e late Capt John Dickey and who affiant was not acquainted wi having died before affiant was born but who affiant always understood was a captain in e militia Service in e Revolutionary war from said Rowan County at affiant was well well acquainted wi his widow e said Elizabe Dicky his earliest recollection at previous to her dea she was an applicant for a pension in rite of her said husband John Dickey dec d but which claim affiant does not ink was ever allowed at she died in said Rowan County N.C. some time in e mon of September 1845 at she left Margrett Anderson who is still living and who was e only living child and heir of her e said Elizabe Dickey [illegible word] at after e dea of e husband e said John Dickey His widow e said Elizabe did not again intermarry at affiant from his earliest recolection always understood from e old persons in e neighborhood at said John Dickey was a captain in e service of e united States in e

revolutionary war at he was one of e first to resist e opression in Nor Carolina and at he was one of e best whigs in e County at at day Sworn to and subscribed before me e date above [signed] J S Johnston [signed] Jas H Enniss JP NOTES: A typed summary in e file adds e following: [I]t appears at John Dickey was a resident of Center Congregation, Rowan County, Nor Carolina, at e commencement of e Revolution. He served from e beginning to e end of e Revolution as a Captain of e Nor Carolina militia and was engaged in e battles of Ramsour s Mill, Camden, King s Mountain and Cowan s Ford. In e file is a copy of a marriage bond signed by John Dickey of Iredell County and Thomas Harris of Mecklenburg County on 10 Nov 1793 for e marriage of Dickey to Elizabe Leacy. The file also includes pages from a Bible wi e following handwritten entries: John Dickey departed is life 20 of March 1808 Aged 84 Years Judi[?] Dickey was Born ye 12 day of July 175 [last digit illegible] Mary Dickey was Born October ye 9 1759 Samuel Dickey was Born August ye 29 1765 John Dickey and Elisabe Leasey was Married November ye 18 1793 Peggy Dickey was Born September ye 21 1795 John Dickey Junior was Born October ye 8 1799" The typed summary states at e ree people listed above e marriage we children of John Dickey by a previous wife. It furer states at Elizabe Dickey died 27 Sep 1845 at age 79.

Souern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements & Rosters Supplement to John Dickey W3962 Transcribed and submitted by Fred Weyler 4/20/13 John Dickey FPA w3962 [p18, a discharge certificate wi illegible rubber stamp or seal] This may certify at Robert Cochran served fifteen days in e regiment commanded by Col Lock against e British at e Cataba [sic Catawba] River and was discharged February 12, 1781. s/ John Dickey Capt [p60] State of Nor Carolina Iredell County On is 30 day of Sep t 1840 personally appeared before me D F Cowan, one of e acting justices of e peace in & for e county aforesaid David Hair 1 a resident of said county who is a pensioner of e United States aged about eighty five years who being first duly sworn according to law depose and saye at he was well acquainted wi Captain John Dickey who served in e Revolutionary War, is identical person who was e husband of present applicant Elizabe Dickey. That e said Captain Dickey resided during e war in Center Congregation en Rowan County now Iredell, state aforesaid in e neighborhood of e Brevards. That he served one campaign of five mons wi said Dickey who commanded a company under General Ruerford [Griffi Ruerford] in Sou Carolina at Camdin [sic Camden, e battle of which was fought on August 15-16, 1780] and in at region of country. That deponent and Captain Dickey were bo under Genl Ruerford when at General was taken prisoner. That he & Capt. Dickey served one oer tour of ree mons togeer under Genl Davidson & were bo under at Genl when he was killed at Cowan s Ford on e Catawba River & when e Brittish [sic] crossed e said river at said ford e said Dickey still serving as captain & commanding a company. That e deponent inks Capt Dickey served wi him in one oer tour to Wilming- [p61] ton [Wilmington] state aforesaid of ree mons. The deponent is not certain of is service but inks he is well known at Captain Dickey was almost continually in e service during e whole war & generally acted as captain in all his services. old Captain Dickey in consequence of his being as deponent supposes about fifty years of age at at time. That deponent in going from his farm to join his company in Sou Carolina lodged at Capt Dickey s house over night at one time. That he always understood at Capt Dickey commanded a company under Col Locke at e battle of Ramsour s Mill [June 20, 1780]. Deponent was not in at battle but his broer Robt Hair 2 was & he often heard him Robt Hair speak of Capt Dickey s gallant conduct in at battle. That Capt Dickey was always reputed in is region of country up to e time of his dea to have been a soldier of e Revolution, at from old age & loss of memory deponent cannot recollect any oer particular services of Captain Dickey, but deponent knows at said Dickey was in e service as aforesaid & was almost continually out during e war as aforesaid at from bodily infirmities, deponent cannot appear in open court to make is affidavit. Furer he saye not. Sworn to & subscribed on e day and year above written. Before me David Hair, x his mark W. F. Cowan J.P. Supplemented by Will Graves 4/20/13 [p 21] State of Nor Carolina Iredell County On is 26 day of September 1840 Personally appeared before me W. T. Cowin a Justice of e peace in and for e County aforesaid John Cochran aged about eighty years a resident of e County [&] State aforesaid who after being duly sworn according to law depose and sai at he is well acquainted wi Elizabe Dickey and at she is e widow of e identical Captain John Dickey who served in e Revolutionary War as stated in e declaration of Elizabe Dickey his said widow. He furer says at he was well acquainted wi e said John Dickey before during and after e Revolutionary War, at said Dickey served as a Captain during e said war, under General Ruerford sometimes, also at said Dickey was Captain of a company in e battle of Ramsour's Mill [June 20, 1780], where he acted wi great bravery during e battle so much so, at his conduct on at day was e chief topic of conversation in his neighborhood & e country around for some time afterwards, at he still recollects part of a song at was composed immediately after at battle & frequently sung for a long time afterwards e only verse or part of a first at has not escaped his memory is as follows viz. "As for old Colonel C, he kept pretty well back, While brave Captain Dickey brought on e attack He ordered em to retreat & form Which made our old hero graviously [grievously?] Storm" That [he, Dickey] was Captain of a company & served under General Davidson in guarding e Fords on e Catawba River & was at Cowans Ford when e British crossed at at place when General Davidson was killed & continued firing until his men had nearly all left him & till numbers of e enemy had passed him, when he (Dickey) secretive himself under e bank of e River till e British had passed on, he en followed on & joined his company at he does not recollect any oer Battles, e said Dickey was engaged in, but has no doubt he was in oers, as deponent well knows said Dickey was engaged as a volunteer in various Services, pretty much during e whole of e war from first to last and was accounted & revered in his neighborhood 2 Robert Hair S9567

as a brave Captain of e Revolution up to e time of his dea which took place about e year 1808 in e spring at said Dickey was about 50 years of age or upwards of 50 when he quit e service at he e said Dickey & Elizabe Leasy were married in e fall or winter of 1793 & at ey lived togeer as man & wife up to e period of said Dickey's dea at he was a ruling elder in e Presbyterian Church for a long time before & up to e time of his dea furer deponent sai not. Sworn to and subscribed before me e day and year above written. W. T. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal of office is 19 April 1852 S/ Wm J. Clarke, Comptr [p 47: Power of attorney dated April 24, 1852 given by Mara Anderson of Rowan County Nor Carolina in which she auorizes her attorney to pursue e claim of her moer Elizabe Dickey widow of Captain John Dickey ] [Note: ere are a number of letters in e file from Margaret Anderson to J L Edwards regarding her claim.]

[p 71] State of Nor Carolina Rowan County: On is e 14 day of April 1852 personally appeared before me James H Ennis an acting Justice of e Peace in & for said County Alfred D Kerr resident of Iredell County, aged fifty-seven years makes oa in due form of law at he is e son of James Kerr late of Rowan County in Nor Carolina who was Lieutenant under Captain Falls [Gilbrai Falls] who fell at e Battle of Ramsour's Mill in e Revolutionary War in 1780, and at he now resides on e same plantation owned during e Revolutionary War by Adam Terrence and called Terrence's cross roads. That he was in his you, well acquainted wi Captain John Dickey who resided wiin two miles of said Cross Roads; That his Faer and e said Captain Dickey lived in e same neighborhood & were elders in e same church at at time from Affiant's earliest recollection, That affiant's Faer & said Dickey belonged to e same Committee of Safety previous to e Revolutionary War in said Rowan County, That Affiant has often heard his Faer & said Dickey speak of e various occurrences of at day, at e said Dickey was Captain in command of a militia Company in e Revolutionary War, & performed considerable service during said war. Affiant distinctly recollects hearing his Faer & said Captain Dickey speak of being in e same service at e Battle at Ramsour's Mill. That when Captain Falls was shot down Affiant's Faer being Lieutenant under said Falls his horse was shot from under him at at time, just at is time, as affiant always understood from his Faer at e said Captain Dickey being in command of a Company of Infantry marched up immediately in e rear using e following words to wit: "Huzzah Boys fight on take good aim I see some of em falling every time we shoot." That from Affiant's earliest recollection he has frequently heard his Faer & said Captain Dickey speak of e language used by said Captain Dickey on at occasion and which sense, Affiant can recollect he has often heard various oers repeat having become a byword, Among e old soldiers of at day Affiant does not know how long said Captain Dickey remained in actual service during said war but always understood at he took a very active part in & performed considerable service in said War at he was among e first in said Rowan County to resist e Oppression of Great Britain. Affiant recollects at previous to his Faer's dea he was shown by his said Faer e Battle Ground of Ramsour's Mills at his Faer showed him where Captain Falls fell and showed him where Falls, Bowman, & Smi were all buried in e same grave, Affiant does not recollect e precise time, when Captain Dickey died but at he died in e same neighborhood many years ago at at e time of his Dea, he left his widow who survived him several years but e precise date of her Dea affiant does not know nor does affiant now recollect who were for living children. S/ A. D.
