Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) November 4, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Bill Donohue: Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on Clergy Sex Abuse Debunked Unlike most reporters and commentators Dr. Donohue has read most of the Pennsylvania The purpose of this paper is to expose many of the myths and lies that harm the report and the interpretation the report. Myth: Over 300 priests were found guilty of preying on the youth in Pennsylvania. Fact: No one was found guilty of anything. This did not stop CBS from stating 300 predator priests abuse more than 1,000 children over a period of 70 years. These are just accusations, most were never verified by either the grand jury or the dioceses. The report as well as CBS are wrong in saying that all the accused are priests. Some were brothers, deacons and seminarians. How many of the 300 persons were guilty? Dr. Donohue believes that maybe half are guilty. He said that according to the 2004 report by the John Jay College for Criminal Justice 4 percent of priests nationwide had a credible accusation made against them between 1950-2002. The report also states that half that number was confirmed. If that is correct the 300 figure drops to around 150. During the seven decades under investigation by the grand jury, there were over 5,000 priests serving in Pennsylvania. This also includes two dioceses not covered in the report. As a result the accusation made against the priest is very small. This is a different picture than what the media tells us. Also, the accused named was never given a change to defend themselves against the charges. This is because the report was investigative and not evidentiary. Even though the report s summary suggest that it is authoritative, it manifestly is not. The report covers accusations that go back to World War II Almost all the accused are either dead or thrown out of ministry. For example, in the Diocese of Harrisburg, 71 persons are named; 42 are dead and four are missing. Most of those who are still alive are no longer in ministry. Some cases are so old that they are unbelievable. A perfect example is the case of Father Joseph M. Ganter. He was born in 1892 and was accused in 2008 by an 80-year old man of abusing him in the 1930s. Also in 1945, at the request of Fr. Ganter, a Justice of the Peace interviewed three teenage males who made accusations against him. Not only did they give conflicting stories, the three admitted that they were never abused by Fr. Ganter. Adapted by CNSNews Notes from Deacon Fred For the Love of God The commitment of love is the strongest, the most everlasting commitment one can live. Even if two people were to part having lived that commitment, they never really do part. That bond of love is never broken and transcends space and time. When we look back on our lives and probe our hearts it won t take long to find that this is true. There is only One who has no beginning or no end. There is only One who is eternal. Love must be that which comes from God and is His Divine Nature that we are made of. It is that love that brings life to all of us. Love the Lord our God with all of our hearts, minds and soul and each other because we are His. This is more than words. This is the stuff of eternity. To love is to commit. To love is to honor. To love is to cherish. To love is to sacrifice. To love is to forgive. To love is to live in that special place our Lord called heaven. One of the most touching and inspiring accounts of such a strong witness to love and to humanity which touched my heart and perhaps yours as well, happened on that dark day at Columbine High School. Her mother wrote about her daughter s rebirth which her daughter called her second birthday on March 8, 1997 the day she invited Jesus into her life. Through the love and commitment of a local youth group and a retreat she attended, she was on fire for our Lord. She was so much in love with Jesus and His message she wanted to leave her Christian school and attend public school so that she could witness to Christ s love to those in need. That school was Columbine. She wrote in one of her letters I wonder what God is going to do with my life? I m confident I will know someday. On April 20, 1999 she was asked if she believed in God by a very troubled young man. Without hesitation she looked at him and said Yes. Cassie Bernall, November 6, 1981 April 20, 1999 Happy Birthday Cassie -- Your message will live forever!

November 4, 2018 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) A P, GOD S LAWS God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Page 3, SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time; National Vocation Awareness Week; Daylight Saving Time ends Tuesday: Election Day Friday: The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Saturday: St. Leo the Great TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in chapter at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in chapter by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. PRAY FOR THE DEAD Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. St. John Chrysostom

It is usually considered that special graces are received by the person who the intention is for. Masses are said for many reasons; for a deceased person, for a living person, in honor of someone s birthday, in honor of someone's anniversary, etc. The name of the person or persons we are praying for is mentioned in the general intercessions, by the priest at Mass and in our weekly bulletin. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, living or deceased, please go to the Parish Office. A Mass Card will be given to you as a reminder of the time and date you requested.

Page 6 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) November 4, 2018 Notitas del Diácono José El escriba fiel sólo le pregunta a Jesús: Cuál es el primero de todos los mandamientos? (Marcos 12, 28).
