Revelation Chapter 15 Dumb, Dumber or Dumbest? *All scripture references are from the NASU unless otherwise noted* Calvary Chapel Fellowship of Enid Matthew W. Thoms, Pastor/Teacher July 2017 Teaching: Let me remind you, that if it would help on the back table is a diagram of end time events that offers a big-picture view on the left with more detail on the right. So if you think that might help please help yourself to one. And this morning would be a great morning for a big-picture memory check So right now we re in the (Church Age). After this comes the (Rapture), after which we believers will stand before the (Bema Seat). Meanwhile down here on earth the unbelievers are going through the (Tribulation) and at the conclusion of that seven year period of time comes (The Second Coming). Shortly after the Second Coming the (Battle of Armageddon) takes place. Then we enter into the (Millennial Reign) for 1,000 years. And after that comes the (Great White Throne of Judgment). And then The New Jerusalem and our Heavenly Eternity. Q. So where within that, does this morning s text place us then? The seven years of Tribulation! That season of time when the consequences of man s sin are allowed to have their full effect without the restraint of the Holy Spirit and when the Lord s wrath is directly hurled down upon the earth in the hope of pushing some to repentance and salvation. And just as a refresher remember that the Tribulation is broken up into three waves of seven; Seven Seal Judgments, then Seven Trumpet Judgments and finally, Seven Bowl Judgments. And here in chapter 15, we re between the sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and the events that will occur because of it. But the beginning of those events is announced in this chapter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1

I think of it like a boxing match when the fighters make their way down those long corridors before the bout starts. In the scene John s describing the angels of the Bowl Judgments are coming out in preparation. Now some bad things, as you may recall, have already occurred up to this point in the Tribulation: 1. In the Seal Judgments The Antichrist comes on the scene and then war and famine and death follow. There s a great persecution of those who come to Christ after the Rapture and and abundance of natural disasters occur. 2. Then the Trumpet Judgments (known as the judgment of thirds ) as 1/3 of the vegetation of earth is burned up and 1/3 of the life in the sea is destroyed along with 1/3 of all the fresh water on earth. 1/3 of all the stars are extinguished and as countless demons are released on the earth 1/3 of all mankind is put to death. So it s been pretty rough no picnic but as we re reminded in this morning s text that s all been a mere warm up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Revelation obviously deals with the judgment of God and chapter 15 is really the introduction to the grand finale the final seven waves of God s judgment known as the Seven Bowl Judgments; introduced here in chapter 15 and then beginning in earnest in chapter 16. I ve shared it with you before, but it helps me to understand God s heart when I remember my own children. They were so different one from the other. My daughter s always had a pretty soft heart. For most of her life her attitude and actions have been driven by her love. As a child it was always very important to her that she please her mother and me. My son, on the other hand he was always compelled by consequences. Whereas my daughter might make her decision by asking Will this please my parents, my son would ask How much pain will this cost me? Now I would honestly have preferred to have a sensitive heart in both my children in part because I couldn t count the number of hours I had to invest in disciplining my son. But in many ways that s what the Tribulation is. 2

God has spoken to those who would hear His voice of love for thousands of years, but the time will come when He will abandon that tactic and speak with a hand of judgment. But even then the motivation remains unchanged it s all God s plea for His creation to turn to Him and choose Heaven over Hell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some time back I was watching a Pastor Ken Graves video and he was pointing out how Jesus says in the 10 th chapter of John that as the Good Shepherd, He leads His sheep and His sheep follow Him. And Ken drew the contrast between that and the experience of the Apostle Paul on the Damascus Road in Acts chapter 9. Because when Jesus speaks to us and beckons us to follow Him it s obviously so that He can lead us to the right place the place He wants us to be the place we need to be. Q. But think of what happened in Paul s case what did the Lord say to Him? Saul, Saul it is hard for you to kick against the goad. See all sheep are dumb! But in a relative sense, even a semi-smart sheep will follow the voice of their master, but for the really dumb ones the only way to get them moving in the right direction is a poke a sharp stick in their rear. And in a way the whole season of the Tribulation is a sharp stick in the rear a goad to get a stubborn group of people moving in the right direction. The same group of people who first heard the Lord s invitation to follow Him and rejected it. Q. But the more important question is which one are you? Are the one who responds when the Lord says Let s go to this pasture over here or do you force Him to pick up the stick? Well let s jump in and see what John sees ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Verse 1: John s description might seem odd in that he calls it great and marvelous. Remember he s witnessing the worst series of disasters the world has ever known. Q. So what s great and marvelous about that? It s great in the sense of its power and impact and it s marvelous because in them the wrath of God is finished! So John s actually rejoicing at this sight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Verses 2-4: In verse 1 John sees seven angels, but now here in verses 2-4, he s seeing a different scene a whole multitude singing in Heaven and he doesn t come back to the seven angels until verse 5. 3

So before him now a multitude on a Sea of Glass Q. And who are they? -- Tribulation Saints. Those who ve overcome the Antichrist and his evil world system. Q. And how d they overcome? By submitting to Christ even choosing a death in His name over life in the name of anyone else. Now we don t generally think of death as overcoming. Martyrdom is not necessarily synonymous with victory in our vocabulary. But holding fast to the name of Christ is the ultimate victory. And that fact isn t altered by the earthly outcome no matter what that outcome is. It comes back to Romans 8:28 really Rom 8:28 we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Q. It s easy to say, but do you really know it and believe it? How much do you believe it? Do your decisions and priorities does your life reflect your belief in it? Q. Does holding fast to Christ spell victory to you no matter what the earthly outcome? Two things that I find interesting about this group of praising martyrs: 1. First they re specifically referred to as victorious overcomers. Not poor martyrs or victims. Not defeated Christians, but victorious overcomers. That s God s perspective and it s so important for us because it often happens that holding fast to Christ costs us in an earthly sense. It can make us feel defeated. It can lead us to poverty and make us an outcast. But those are only worldly perceptions. We need to remember that victory in God s economy is always measured by your grip on Christ not the temporal outcome of that grip. 2. And the second thing that I find interesting about this group is that these are folks that have just gone through a very literal living hell and for them the end of their earthly lives was horrible; starvation and torture and yet Q. What are they singing about here? There not singing some old, sad dirge. They re singing The Song of Moses from Exodus15 & Deuteronomy 32 as 4

well as The Song of the Lamb. Both of them, songs that reflect God s great care and power and authority. So clearly, these martyrs don t regret their decision to give it all up for the Lord. I think in Heaven we ll be like my granddaughter, Riley. She can be so very upset about something screaming and throwing a fit, but hand her a piece of candy or a chip and within 5 seconds she can dry up her tears and be giggling with joy again. She s completely forgotten the problem and pain. As Paul says in Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But people react differently to Tribulation in their life. Some get bitter and some draw closer to the Lord. Some get worried and some pray and trust. Think of popcorn. You can take regular corn and put it in a skillet of oil, raise the temperature to 400 degrees and all it will do is grow hard and shriveled. But you can take popping corn and put it in that same skillet and in just a few minutes its crusty shell breaks open and it becomes something that blesses many. That s also true of people. Q. When the heat goes up what do you do? Do you grow hard and shriveled or do you allow that experience to break up your hardness and make you a blessing to those around you? Q. Do you sing the praises of God like this group? The words of the songs they sing are noteworthy in that they re Christ-centric. Like all good worship songs Christ is at the center. He s the point and the hero. I m especially drawn to verse 4, Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? It s like they re perplexed saying Lord, You ve shown them Your mercy and You ve shown them Your power in judgment and You ve been long suffering how, O Lord can they not turn to You and repent? It just seems like they don t get it they can t comprehend the mindset of these stubborn people. Q. But again how about us what do you do when God squeezes you? It seems that each consecutive generation has an ever growing expectation of blessing. 5

There s an ever-growing me mentality. A growing belief that God owes people happiness just name it and claim it. But that s a reversal of truth. God doesn t exist for our pleasure rather as Philippians 2:13 reminds us we exist for His. And that deceived perception has altered the way people react to adversity and we need to be a people who will counter that lie not so much with our words, but with our attitudes and actions. Q. So again what do you do when God squeezes you? Now back to these angels of judgment ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Verses 5-8: The Temple of the Tabernacle of Testimony that s quite a name, but it s merely a reference to the Holy of Holies. The little 15 foot by 15 foot Holy Sanctuary for the Presence of God in the Tabernacle of the Wilderness Wondering Years (Exodus 26). The room behind the veil where the Ark of the Covenant resided. That place where only the High Priest was allowed. That place that was a testimony to the holiness of God and the need of the people to be forgiven by that Holy God. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The angels of this final judgment come out and the God of all judgment remains there alone. And until this judgment is completed no one is allowed to re-enter that sanctuary where God is. Q. And why do you think that is? Well remember that chapter 14 ends with a large gathering of people. A group of people who are very angry with God. In fact angry enough to come against Him in the battle of Armageddon. God called to them and they rejected Him, but up to this point in our text God has continued to goad them 7 years of goading. But rather than responding, they ve just hardened their hearts and kicked all the harder against His love. And I really believe that that s why God s in that Tabernacle. He s mourning. Ezek 18:23 "Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked," declares the Lord GOD, " And then He answers His own question a few chapters later saying Ezek 33:11 "As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! 6

But sadly there are many who will not and so God mourns alone! But then we have this group described in chapter 15. And just like the first group form chapter 14 they too ignored God s verbal invitation. Throughout the Age of Grace, God s invitation has been consistent and persistent! He s called to His creation and invited them to become His sheep and follow His voice, but both of these groups said No thanks! Q. How can we know that? Because they missed the Rapture and entered into the Seven Year Tribulation. But the difference between these two groups; the group from chapter 14 and this group in chapter 15 is that the second group felt God s hand of correction and relented. Conclusion: The way I look at it you can be a dumb sheep or you can be an even dumber sheep or you can be the dumbest of all and choose not to be a sheep at all. 1. A dumb sheep is the one that s smart enough to know he s dumb. Smart enough to know how desperately he needs God s guidance so he or she listens for the Shepherd s voice and follows when He speaks. It s humbling to stand up and say Hi my name s Matthew and I m a dumb sheep it s humbling, but it s how we become victorious overcomers. 2. But then we have the dumber sheep. This is the one who says no to God s voice forcing the Lord to pick up a stick and whittle it to a point. The dumber sheep is the one who will only respond when the Lord causes him so much pain that he can t take it anymore. He s really dumb but at least he s still a sheep. 3. Q. And the dumbest? The dumbest one of all is the one that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 25:33. The Goat that God invites to confess that he s a dumb sheep but he declines. The Lord then encourages him at the business end of a sharp stick but he still says No! We cry with those Tribulation martyrs. "[Why] will [they] not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? And God He mourns alone for them. 7
