Jesus Our Righteousness November, 208 Series, Grateful Pastor Matt Whiteford Corinthians :30; Romans 3:2-26 I. Intro A. I Cor :30 - wisdom of God; salvation And because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, Who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,. Righteousness: have been saved from the penalty of sin 2. Sanctification: are being saved from the power of sin 3. Redemption: will be saved from the presence of sin B. Grateful (tie to Thanksgiving). We, of all people, have one compelling reason to be filled with gratitude beyond our experiences and circumstances Jesus Christ is our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. He fully and finally takes care of our past, our present, and our future. 2. I n order to fully realize this, we have to understand what Christ has done and how it has literally changed us and our situation. *Over the next few weeks, we are going to unpack and understand the gravity and freedom contained in I Cor :30. And I believe that we will find reason to be grateful regardless of our individual circumstances or experiences. II. Jesus Our Righteousness A. Righteousness has to do with our standing before God. We are justified, which means God has declared us righteous in Jesus Christ. This is an instantaneous and finished work. B. Romans 3:2-26. Believing vs behaving: the Law could witness to God s righteousness, but it could not provide it for sinful mankind. (vs 2-22) 2. Faith is only as good as its object: all of us trust something. (v 22) 3. All people are guilty and sentenced to eternal death. (vs 22-23) 4. Made right by grace: without cause. There is no good cause in you or me that would merit God s favor, forgiveness, or salvation. (v 24) 5. The deep cost God had to bear: propitiation is the perfect satisfaction of God s Law and blood was what it cost for His Law to be satisfied. (vs 24-25) 6. Perfect justice: Jesus is that action of God s character, love and light. a. Fully met the demands of the Old Testament law (light) b. Fully expressed the love of God s heart (love) C. What this means. Judicial righteousness a. Defendant = me; Judge = God b. Justification is simply the truth that, in your case, you have been declared righteous rather than guilty or not guilty (notice that it s more than just not guilty )

*We are right in God s eyes. We are as right as Jesus is right before God. This means we are eternally and continuously accepted by God and we stand in perfect conformity to God s standards of righteousness. *God judicially laces His righteousness over the believer! 2. The biggest hurdle a. We have a really difficult time seeing ourselves as God sees us. ) Good because of our offerings 2) Bad because of our failures But you don t see what s inside. It doesn t matter. b. We are free to see ourselves the way God sees us! *You are free from the eternal penalty of your sin and you are the perfect and holy child of God. III. Do A. Philippians 3:8-9 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith. Because of the gift/declaration of righteous, Paul sees everything else as inferior. 2. Paul is determined to live in a way that affirms how God sees him. 3. You and I are not living to attain something, we are living to reflect something! B. Personal declaration: I declare my righteousness is in Christ Jesus. My life has been made right before God. God accepts me. I am safe in the hands of God. I am justified through faith in Christ. I have been made righteous through Christ, therefore, there is no condemnation for me because I am in Christ Jesus. God has clothed me with the coat of Christ s righteousness and I humbly wear it as a witness and a reminder of who I am.

GRATEFUL: JESUS OUR RIGHTEOUNESS CORINTHIANS :30; ROMANS 3:2-26 NOVEMBER, 208 PASTOR MATT WHITEFORD GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER (USE JUST ONE OR ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS TO CONNECT AS YOU START YOUR CONVERSATION) 2 Share a story from your childhood about when you did something that damaged your home or room in some way. Did you admit fault? Did you try and fix the damage yourself? What does your response say about you? Do you tend to struggle more with guilt over your sinfulness or trying to work to pay God back? Share something from your life that supports your answer. This is the last week of the fall quarter for Home Groups. We hope it has been a great couple of months of building community and growing together! It is a bit awkward that this is the last week of these discussion guides for the fall and yet it is the first week of a short series called Grateful. No worries, because this will still be a great discussion centered around the theological idea of righteousness and how our only hope is in Jesus alone. QUICK REVIEW (OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE TO SHARE WHAT MOST STOOD OUT FROM SUNDAY S MESSAGE) Looking back at your notes from this week s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, encouraged, challenged, or confused you? DIG DEEPER (OBSERVATIONS FROM THE SCRIPTURE OR COMPLEMENTARY SCRIPTURES FROM SUNDAY S MESSAGE) In Romans :8-3:20, Paul painted a drastic, but accurate image of the spiritual and moral condition of the human race. Starting in v. 2, Paul begins to paint a picture of hope a picture of our righteousness. We are justified, which means God has declared us righteous in Jesus Christ. This is an instantaneous and finished work. Someone read Romans 3:2-26. Romans 3:2-26 (ESV) 2 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 Whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show His righteousness at the present time, so that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. What does v. 2 tells us God has provided for all people? As you look back at the previous few verses in Romans 3, why is what God has provided so crucial? What do you think it means to fall short of God s glory? How can we bring glory to God even in our failures?

What part does Jesus play in our righteousness? (vs. 24-25) According to v. 27, why is all boasting excluded? God had to bear a deep cost - why do you believe it was necessary for Jesus to die? (v. 25) What does this tell you about God? What does this tell you about us? Justify is a legal term meaning God declares the sinner not guilty. How does being declared not guilty impact your future? How does it impact you today? No one is without sin; we all have sinned. Furthermore, as sinners we always and continually fall short of God s standard for us. Essentially, this verse declares why people can be justified only through faith in Christ. Human sin was catastrophic in its consequences. Our only hope was for God to mercifully offer us a way of salvation in Jesus Christ, His Son. God never offered to sell salvation to people for a price. On the other hand, no human being could even begin to pay the equivalent value of eternal salvation. Because of this, Paul declared that God acted to justify people freely by His grace. Not only can we never purchase salvation on our own, we are enslaved to sin and we actually need to be purchased. LIVE IT OUT (DISCUSS HOW YOU CAN LIVE OUT THE TRUTHS YOU JUST OBSERVED IN SCRIPTURE) 2 3 4 5 Read Philippians 3:8-9. If the greatest thing is to know Jesus and to be made like Him, then how should this change the way you live right now? Pastor Matt shared on Sunday that we are as right as Jesus is right before God. This means we are eternally and continuously accepted by God and we stand in perfect conformity to God s standards of righteousness. Is there a sin in your life that causes you to question if God sees you as righteous? How can you incorporate the truth of this lesson into your life to help combat the idea that your sin makes you undeserving of being seen by God as righteous? What would you say to people who claim that they have done too many bad things to be forgiven of their sins? Who in your life needs to be encouraged to accept God s righteousness rather than trying to earn it or live with guilt? How can you help them this week? As you look back on this quarter, what are one or two things about your home group experience that you are grateful for? (It can be time spent together, a service project, spiritual breakthrough, a way the group served you, a growth challenge, or anything else.) CLOSING PRAYER Have everyone who would like to, pray this aloud together: Thank you God, that my righteousness is in Christ Jesus. Because of You, I have been made right in Your eyes. You accept me. I am safe in Your hands. You have justified me through my faith in Jesus. Because I have been made righteous through Jesus, there is no condemnation for me because I am in Christ Jesus. Thank You for clothing me with the coat of Jesus righteousness and I will humbly wear it as a witness and a reminder of who I am.
