Summer 2018 Leadership Report Each year the President of the United States provides a State of the Union address as a way to inform the citizens of the United States about the happenings of our country. The Session of the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church believes that it is a good idea to do something similar for our congregation. Over the course of the year, we have so many events, opportunities, experiences, and decisions to share that it is often difficult to see how they work together in context. So, with that in mind, I am endeavoring to provide you with the State of the Cumberland Church. Please let me know if you find this helpful. We might do something similar on a quarterly basis if you do. -Pastor Cory Goals Each year the Session of the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church creates and refines a set of priority areas of focus for that church year. We work on these directives for the year and continually review our progress and revise the list. In 2017 our elders identified these areas of attention: Provide Communion to Shut-Ins Develop a formal visitation program for existing members and prospective members Further develop our year-round Youth Ministry Continue to develop our robust Family and Children's Ministry Establish a Bible Study led by the Senior Pastor Develop age appropriate Small Groups Create Leadership training opportunities for all members Develop and maintain a method of sharing prayer concerns Improve existing and develop new methods of communication between the Diaconate, Session, Professional Staff and congregation.

Goals *Please stand if you are able. You may remember some of the structural changes and programming additions that were made in 2017 in our attempts to meet the needs listed above. One way that our church has changed direction in the attempt to meet these needs was through the restructuring of our elders, deacons, and ministry committees in 2017. Last year we formed a task force of elders to review our ministry leadership structures. Based on the above areas of need, the Task Force made the following recommendations which were approved and implemented by the Session: The Session is tasked to provide spiritual care, oversight, vision and strategy The Diaconate will manage operations The Sr. Pastor and respective ministry support staff will work with the Session and Diaconate to facilitate ministry initiatives The number of standing committees will be reduced and the existing committees will report to the Diaconate or Session based on their mission statements and functions The Ministry Teams report to : It must be noted that the eliminated ministry teams will not Discipleship Ministry Team (Deacons) leave a void in the needs of our congregation. Instead, we believe it Finance Ministry Team (Elders/Deacons) will allow more people to participate in the service of these ministries Personnel Ministry Team (Elders) and do so in a timelier manner. Physical Plant Ministry Team (Deacons) -Elder Jerry Edwards Also in 2017, the Session (ruling elders) reiterated their support of the Head, Heart, and Hands initiative. This program empowers individuals and groups in the congregation to create and facilitate ministry opportunities for the congregation based on their passions and yranidro callings for ministry. As a result, 2017 Head, Heart, and Hands events designed and lead by those in our church family provided our congregation the opportunities for ministry like: Handgun Classes Fundraisers for ministry needs in the community Quilting Classes Outreach and Evangelism opportunities Drama Presentations Service opportunities inside and outside of the Bible Studies church Fellowship Meals Bridge Classes Christmons Book Club As a result of these and other leadership initiatives, we added many individuals and families to our church family, expanded our ministry reach in our community, and finished the year of 2017 over budget. 2017 also provided us an opportunity to: Provide new and engaging opportunities in our children's and youth ministries Provide a church mobile app with worship archives and online giving Provide a digital prayer wall to inform one another about prayer concerns and updates Create a Full-Time Music Minister Position and begin the search to fill it Expand our Vacation Bible School Event Expand our Trunk or Treat Event Initiate a young adult ministry

Continued Progress - 2018 Goals for 2018 With the New Year came a new set of goals from the 2018 Session. Some were refined versions of the list from 2017 and some were new. Communion to shut-ins Discipleship/Small Groups Age group appropriate Visitation Leadership Training discovering gifts/affinities Youth-Year round ministry Prayer Concern Communication Family and Children's ministry Communications Bible Study Led by pastor Several of the components in the restructuring of leadership boards and ministry teams that began in 2017 were not able to be completed in that same year. So, in the first six months of 2018, the leadership sought to shore up those changes so that we might continue our forward momentum. For the ministry teams that were kept as a part of the restructuring, the Session developed the organizational process for the management and staffing of these volunteer ministry teams. These teams are now being reformed according to the new staffing process. Each ministry team is managed by a chair and leadership liaison along with the Sr. Pastor. The chair is nominated and agreed upon by the leadership body that holds responsibility for the ministry team. For Example, the Discipleship Ministry Team reports to the deacons. So, the Deacons nominate a chairperson for the committee to serve in two-year terms. Additionally, they nominate a deacon to serve as liaison from the deacon body on the committee. The liaison and the chair then work with the Sr. Pastor to staff the rest of the committee according to the goals of the committee set by the governing body (in this case the deacons). They report monthly to their governing bodies. So far the Discipleship Ministry Team is the first to undergo the restructure. The chairs of the other teams have been decided, however, the liaisons and membership of the committees will be decided upon in these next few months. Until that time, the existing members staff those committees. Those chairpersons are: Ricky Petty Personnel If you are interested in serving in Stacey Alexander Discipleship any of these ministries, please let the John Ford- Finance chairperson or the Sr. Pastor know. Physical Plant to be determined. The Discipleship Ministry Team is primarily responsible for the discipleship needs of our children and family ministries. They will focus this year on Alpha Logos, Children s Church, and Vacation Bible School. The 2018 DMT is made up of: Stacey Alexander Chairperson Melissa Baker Debbie Ford Elder Sharon Grooms Lauren Newell Laura Nolen Deacon Liaison Kari Romero Megan Stanley

Continued Progress - 2018 Ministry Staff Position Restructuring As a part of our leadership restructuring, we determined that the existing job responsibilities of our professional ministry staff did not align with the needs of our church as we moved into some new directions. The ministry position needs were evaluated and new positions that better fit the new direction of our church were created. We are thankful that, as it turns out, our existing staff are able to adequately fill these new positions. These new positions include Associate Pastor of Third Age Ministries, Coordinator of Family Ministries, and Youth Ministry Intern. They are staffed by two familiar faces and one new one! Title: Associate Pastor of Third Age Ministries Rev. Annetta Camp Job Summary: The Associate Pastor of Third Age Ministries will provide spiritual and pastoral leadership to the older adults in and around the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church community. She will bring the Good News of Christ and administer the sacraments to older adults in their homes, hospitals, nursing homes, and other special settings. This position will be a resource person with knowledge of church and community services which will aid and assist the older adults of the congregation. The Associate Pastor of Third Age Ministries will support the senior adults by organizing and facilitating a vibrant senior adult ministry. The position is generally about both (1) caring for/ministering to the senior adults and (2) leading the senior adults in their ministry to others. Reports to: Sr. Pastor Title: Coordinator of Family Ministries Matt Tyler Job Summary: The Family Ministries Coordinator is the advocate for all generations of the church and will supplement and support the structures and atmosphere of the church to ensure that the family of God is working together to make disciples of the next generation. This position is first an advocate for the young (children, youth and early adults) because these are the people who are the least knowledgeable and least experienced in the Christian life. This position is next an advocate for the parents/caretakers of the young, helping to support the family and support their growth in the Christian faith. The Family Ministries Coordinator is also concerned for other mature adults because they have an important role in the discipleship and mentoring of parents and young people in the faith. Reports to: Sr. Pastor
