Tour Programme: Sunday 27 th May Vienna Flight arrives into Vienna and you will be met by our tour representative. Every trip to this city starts and finishes with the elegant Ringstrasse, which is recognized as one of the most beautiful boulevards in the world. We will then start our in-depth Jewish Vienna walk (incorporating history from 1192 until 2017) by the sites of the Schiffschul, the Kleine Sperlgasse Schule and Malzgasse, the site of the first Jewish Museum in the world. We ll stop by the Roman Catholic Church, Leopoldskirche. We will also take in the sites of Turkish style Tuerkischer Tempel Synagogue, Leopoldstaedter Tempel, the largest synagogue in Vienna and the Austrian composer Johann Strauss (1825 1899) apartment. We will continue from Albertina Platz to Josephsplatz, the Jewish Museum, travel down the narrow lane of Dorotheergasse, stopping by the Bauernmarkt farmer s market and Vienna s most impressive landmark - St. Stephen s Cathedral. We ll stop off at the Judenplatz Museum and take in the Holocaust Memorial and Stadtempel - the only surviving synagogue from pre-wwii days. Dinner will be at a Kosher restaurant where you get the chance to sample the famous wiener schnitzel. We will spend 2 nights at Hotel Regina, Vienna. Vienna s Holocaust Memorial
Monday 28 th May Vienna continued After breakfast, we will resume our tour at the recently unearthed Seegasse old Jewish cemetery (1500 1783). We will then continue on to Ephrussi Palais, which is the site of de Waals and the famous The Hare with Amber Eyes. Then it s onto the Heldenplatz or Heroes Square and then the Imperial Residence which is the site of the Anschluss (annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany). We will then make our way to the Museum Wien, which exhibits expropriated Jewish collections and Nazi looted art, followed by the Sigmund Freud and Viktor Frankl Museums. You will then have free time to enjoy one of Vienna s famous Coffeehouses. This afternoon we will return to Hapsburgs where we will visit Hofburg Palace, the former winter residence of the Austrian sovereigns and originally built in the 13th century and regularly developed throughout the next 600 years. Then we will take in the Schonbrunn Palace and its attractive surrounding Gardens. This majestic baroque was used as the summer residence and is now listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Dinner at a kosher restaurant. Hofburg Palace Schonbrunn Palace Tuesday 29 th May Vienna/Budapest After a 2.5 hour drive, we will arrive in Budapest. We will start our tour in Hungary s capital by ascending Castle Hill, where the Emperors of the Austro-Hungarian Empire once ruled one of Europe s most powerful entities. We ll journey through the impressive Royal Palace and the lavishly-decorated St. Matthias Church and arrive at the Fisherman s Bastion and Citadel for spectacular views of some of Budapest s most famous landmarks, including Hungary s largest architecture, the renowned Parliament building. Our tour will continue to the city centre and through the sprawling Andrassy Boulevard and up to Heroes' Square. Dinner at a kosher restaurant. Tonight we will embark on a special evening cruise on the Danube River. We will spend 1 night at the Hotel Continental, Budapest.
Danube Bridges of Budapest Wednesday 30 th May Budapest We will spend the morning in the Jewish district, which is still filled with dozens of Synagogues and small shtiebls that make up one of the largest Jewish population in Central Europe. Highlights will include: the Dohany Street Synagogue, the largest of its kind in Europe, The Jewish Museum, built on the site of the house where Theodor Herzl was born and The Community Holocaust Memorial - dedicated to the 600,000 Hungarian Jews who perished in the Holocaust. We will also visit the remaining wall of the Budapest Ghetto and the Kazinczy and Rumbach Synagogues. After lunch we will cover the late arrival of the Holocaust to Hungary in 1944, discussing Wallenberg, Lutz and Kastner as we pass Eichmann s Nazi headquarters, the Glass House and then our last stop, The Shoes on the Danube - a memorial on the side of the Danube, honouring the Jews shot by fascist Arrow Cross militants during World War II.
