Karissa Nulty has been serving as an associate board member representing SIU, but will be graduating from medical school in the spring, so she is not in a position to serve another term. Ticara Onyewuenyi, who moved into 825 N. 8 th last year, has offered to be the liaison for the second year medical students, and Aileen Portugal will stay on, now representing the class of third year students. Dan Linn, a neighbor at 1120 N. 7 th who was previously the board secretary, has offered to fill that role again. Keshia Dotson and Kirk Jefferis would both be new at-large directors. Keshia already lives in the neighborhood with her parents, Kyle and Patty Dotson, and she and her fiancé are currently renovating 819 N. 8 th, a distressed property they purchased from EPNIA. Kirk Jefferis is a commercial real estate broker and CPA who purchased 923 N. 5 th earlier this year and is in the process of renovating it for resale. We are excited about presenting this strong group of candidates, and we hope that you will join with us to get involved in continuing to transform the neighborhood in the coming year.
P a g e 2 Appetite on the Avenue Thank you to everyone who turned out to support the first food truck meet up on North Grand, sponsored by The Avenue Association. We had beautiful weather and a good crowd who enjoyed a variety of local food trucks, drinks, and live music. We ve already had other food trucks express interest in participating in future events, so we hope to make this a regular occurrence. The Avenue generally meets on the first Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at the Dairy Queen at North Grand and 19 th St. We d love to have you join us and be involved in planning for 2018. By Michelle Ownbey, President of EPNIA RESIDENTIAL YARD WASTE/LEAF PICKUP AND BRANCH PICKUP BEGINS OCTOBER 30 YARD WASTE/LEAF PICKUP Residents must place their leaves in brown paper leaf bags or plastic containers that are no more than 30 gallons and weigh no more than 50 lbs. Leaves should be placed curbside by 7 a.m. each Monday morning during the yard waste collection period. The collection period will run through Monday, December 4. All leaves placed properly by 7:00 a.m. each Monday during this six-week time frame will be picked up. RESIDENTIAL BRANCH PICKUP Residential branch pickup for fall also begins on Monday, October 30. New this collection cycle: The fall pickup schedule is pre-set and crews will work in specified areas of the city each week. Residents are encouraged to check the city website, http://springfield.il.us/departments/ PublicWorks/branchPickup.aspx, and scroll to the bottom of the page to the Branch Pickup Map. Residents may also bring their yard waste to Evans Recycling located at 2100 J. David Jones Parkway, Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 7:00 a.m. 12-noon. Yard waste drop off is free during the collection time period. Branches can be dropped off to Evans for free all year-round. P a g e 6 A t H o m e i n t h e P a r k By Lola L. Lucas and Her Friends This month s column is by local author Jackie Jackson. By the time this page is published, Hallowe en s Trunk and Treat will be over, people will have noted all the terrific terrain art in our community, and thoughts will be turning to Thanksgiving and the holidays. But this month I am going to use Lola s page to blow my own horn, as Lola did when she gathered all her Enos Park pages into a book, At Home in the Park. So here s my horn blast: my book, Volume 4 the last one of The Round Barn, A Biography of an American Farm saga, is finally finished! It is going to be out in a party you re all invited to, November 8, from 5 to 7, at the First Presbyterian Church s Cook Lounge, across from Lincoln Library at Capitol and 7th. There will be cider, snacks, games, and books--books not just by me, but by other Springfieldians too, who gather in Enos Park every Thursday, to write their own stories. We are hoping that you will all come you don t have to buy a book, but if you do, they will be heavily discounted in price. And you will find them entertaining. My books may not sound Enos Park centered, as Lola s did, since the central icon the barn I grew up in was in Wisconsin, but all four volumes, and the two small ones preceding it, were written, over a long span of years, in Enos Park. I d been gathering material all my life: as a kid living it, and later, deliberately gathering material while still living it, then later, after my folks died in the 1990 s, and the superhighway went through the farm so that it could no longer be a farm, I gathered as many records and pictures and people s personal stories as I could, that had to do with the farm and its neighborhood. I moved to Springfield and N. Fifth Street in 1970 and began the actual writing of the book in 1979. (Even though when I was fifteen I told my grandfather I was going to write it,) So I was writing about a neighborhood, while living in a neighborhood. When you read Illinois Times, and note my poem-- always on p. 3, it is often about the farm and just as often about N. Fifth Street and this town s happenings. My mother, listening to my dad telling his stories, said, Ron, Jackie can t put that in a book! and he said, Sure she can. And he told me about one I d heard all my life, that at 6 years old he d run after a little girl and pulled down her panties because he d heard girls were different from boys, but he corrected that story: It was the other way around! SHE ran after ME! So that is my message to you, this month: You all have your own stories, and most likely access to others stories, especially relatives: some will be funny, some very sad, all informative, and I urge you to write them down. How else would we know the true story of that little girl who d said, Let s play horsie? and my dad took the jump rope in his teeth and she galloped him behind a bush? The people meeting at my house weekly are writing down their stories, about their families, their neighborhoods some THIS neighborhood we share them, and this makes us get to know each other better and better. I urge you to write your stories down and share them. And I urge you to come to our party for my finishing the book I ve spent so long writing, here in Enos Park but the party will be downtown on November 8. I hope to see my neighbors there!
