From the Desk of...t J Chester Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Today s Gospel describes a typical pattern of Jesus ministry: teaching in the synagogue followed by acts of healing. In his hometown of Nazareth, the people are amazed by what they hear, but they also cannot comprehend how someone they know so well can be so very special. We learn some interesting details about Jesus and his early life. Jesus kinfolk know him to be a carpenter, an artisan who works in wood. Family members of Jesus are also named. Mark describes Jesus as the son of Mary, which is an unusual designation. Adult males were more typically identified with the name of their fathers. Brothers and sisters of Jesus are also named. As Catholics, we believe that Mary was and remained always a virgin, thus we do not believe that this Gospel refers to other children of Mary. We explain this reference by noting that the words brother and sister were generic terms used to refer to all types of relatives, including cousins, nieces, and nephews. Jesus is hampered from performing miracles in Nazareth because of the people s lack of faith. Jesus is surprised by this. In this we find a very human side of Jesus. Who is Jesus? His kinfolk in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. Mark is foreshadowing Jesus rejection by his own people, the people of Israel. While many of the first Christians were Jewish, Christianity took hold and flourished in the Gentile community. Mark s community was mostly a Gentile community. By showing that Jesus himself was rejected, Mark consoles and reassures his first readers. He also prepares us to accept this possible consequence of Christian discipleship. In the Nazarites, we see clearly all the opposition to Jesus and his teaching. This is caused partly by human pride and envy. Pride and envy are still rife among us. All through the history of Christianity, there have been proud men, men high in their own esteem. Not only would they not have Jesus to reign over them, but they have tried to prevent his reign over even those who are gladly and proudly Jesus subjects. Not content with dethroning Jesus in their own hearts and minds, they have devoted all their energies to abolishing him and his Church from the face of our earth. Such enemies of Jesus are still among us. They are more numerous than ever today but just as their predecessors failed in the past, so will these fail today. Jesus will continue to reign, and his Church will continue its mission of leading to heaven all those whose minds are free from sinful pride and therefore open to the truth. Let us renew our loyalty to Jesus today. He humbled himself so that we might be raised. He shared our human nature with us so that we could share his divine nature. He died a cruel death on Calvary so that we could have an eternal life in heaven. We pray for light for those whose foolish pride has left them groping in darkness. Let us also ask Jesus to keep us ever on the road of truth, the road of Christian humility which leads to eternal salvation.
