K H P C (U.S.A.) MAUNDY THURSDAY APRIL 13, 2017 O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen. John Henry Newman A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship
WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS About today s service The service of Maundy Thursday begins the mysteries of the ancient Triduum, the Three Sacred Days. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the sacred days that culminate in the celebration of Easter, the Day of Resurrection. Following the sharing of communion on Maundy Thursday, the chancel is stripped of paraments and the cross is covered. These actions suggest the stripping of Jesus by the soldiers prior to his crucifixion and the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples. These actions, like the darkness that is a part of the Good Friday service, symbolize the humiliation of Jesus, the consequences of sin, and the desolation of the cross. Traditionally, a portion of Psalm 22 is read during the stripping of the chancel. We depart in silence, awash in the impending sorrow this night recalls when the disciples departed the last time from sharing a meal with their Lord and ours. Prayer for the evening Merciful God, as we gather to remember the last night of our Lord before His passion, fill our hearts and our minds with your Holy Spirit. As we remember His love, remember us to our faith community. As we remember His sacrifice, remember us to your mission in Christ. As we remember His washing away our sins, remember us to your body in Christ our Lord. We pray in the name of our loving Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org under Resources/Prayer Request. Flowers on the sanctuary altar are presented to the glory of God by Mr. and Mrs. David Li4leton and their children, in memory of loved ones. MEDITATION Just Be Dr. N. Phillips * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Philippians 2:5-11) Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore, God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING Our giving is an offering to God. All offerings, whether made in the worship service or outside of it, are part of our worship of God and are used to support the Kirk s ministry here and in other parts of the world. PRAYER OF DEDICATION ANTHEM An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare arr. Gerald Near An upper room did our Lord prepare For those he loved until the end: And his disciples still gather there To celebrate their risen Friend. A lasting gift Jesus gave his own: To share his bread, his loving cup. Whatever burdens may bow us down, He by his cross shall lift us up. And after supper he washed their feet, For service, too, is sacrament. In Christ our joy shall be made complete: Sent out to serve, as he was sent. No end there is! we depart in peace, He loves beyond the u4ermost: In every room in our Father s house Christ will be there, as Lord and Host. 5
THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING SANCTUS THE LORD S PRAYER AGNUS DEI Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen. (all together) ( debts, debtors ) O Lamb of God, That takest away the sins of the world, Have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, That takest away the sins of the world, Grant us Thy peace. Harold Darke Harold Darke THE COMMUNION As the bread and wine are given, the following words may be said: The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Thanks be to God. COMMUNION HYMNS (sung by the choirs) O Wondrous Heavenly Bread O wondrous heavenly bread, whereby mankind is fed, O food of love divine, long promised by a sign. O deepest mystery! One with our Lord to be. Humble, lowly, to all is offered free. César Franck This food to be our aid; so was the promise made. On that same night wherein the Savior was betrayed. This is my body true, this blood was shed for you. All who eat and drink shall have life anew. It Is a Thing Most Wonderful It is a thing most wonderful, Almost too wonderful to be, That God s own Son should come from heaven, And die to save a child like me. John Ireland And yet I know that it is true: He chose a poor and humble lot, And wept, and toiled, and mourned, and died, For love of those who loved him not. 6 I sometimes think about the Cross, And shut my eyes, and try to see The cruel nails and crown of thorns, And Jesus crucified for me.
But even could I see him die, I could but see a li4le part Of that great love, which like a fire, Is always burning in his heart. And yet I want to love thee, Lord; O light a flame within my heart, And I will love thee more and more, Until I see thee as thou art. Sion, Praise Thy Savior, Singing Henry Weman Sion, praise thy Savior, singing Hymns with exultation ringing, Praise thy King and Shepherd true. Honor him, thy voice upraising, who surpasseth all thy praising; Never canst thou reach his due. Let the Bread, life-giving, living, be our theme of glad thanksgiving, Now indeed before thee set; As of old the Lord provided when the twelve, divinely guided, At the holy table met. What he did, at supper seated, Christ ordained to be repeated, His memorial ne er to cease; His command for guidance taking, Bread and wine we hallow, making Thus our sacrifice of peace. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God of grace, your Son Jesus Christ left us this holy meal of bread and wine in which we share his body and blood. May we who have celebrated this sign of his great love show in our lives the fruits of his redemption; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE SENDING * HYMN 97 Go to Dark Gethsemane Redhead 76 (stanzas 1, 2 and 3 only) STRIPPING OF THE PARAMENTS AND COVERING THE CROSS During the stripping of the chancel, Psalm 22 will be read.
